The golden age of PC gaming - classic games

Uhuhuhuhuh, Uhuhuhuhuhuhu.

And that really creeps me out and makes me feel old even more than thinking about classic games

lol thats actually the exact thing i was thinking of when i posted

First PC game I played was C&C Tiberian Sun, loved it

My first FPS was Jedi Outcast and my first RPG was KotOR.

System shock 2…mmmmmmmmmm…

Woohoo, Crusaders of Might & Magic ^^

PONG!!!

And no mention of the most replayable game ever???

THE GOLDEN AGE OF [COLOR=‘Red’]PC GAMING YOU TWAT.

There’s a sociological factor in all this. Back in the day, gamers were both younger and less demanding. Gamers didn’t call it “fail” when you had to click every single unit in Dune 2, instead of dragging a rectangle around all of them and issue orders to them with a right-click. We simply didn’t know that we could demand something so cool, so we played those games the way they were, and were happy.

It’s the same with movies. Classic movies, even Oscar ones, like “Top Gun” or “Commando” or “Predator” or “Mortal Kombat” were popular simply because at the time they were new, no-one knew that it was possible to “do better”.

Half-Life was the first 3D FPS that actually had a strong, believable, coherent narrative. Until then, everyone thought that 3D FPSs must simply be Doom clones: You spawn at level start, pick up 3 different colored keys, shoot 200 monsters which are placed arbitrarily and wait idly until you move close to them, and then locate a huge “Exit” switch.

Try making such game today and you’ll be called names.

Mario had many PC ports though.

Right, but I played HL1 first in 2002, and THEN I enjoyed it more than the games of the year. And it was all because of the atmosphere it created.

Cool game bro, i played it a lot.

I’m just going to go ahead and say it: Mario freakin’ sucks. Honestly, its a two hour game that only lasts longer because it has a worthless life system.

It isn’t terrible, but it far down the list of replayable games.

I only really hate it because it set a precedent for a life system in non-arcade games, a system that we are still trying to get rid of today.

still not really appropriate for this topic though

The only game I know of that has become a (mind-melting) classic within three weeks is, drum roll please…

Who doesn’t get a kick out of the tagline - “now your thinking with portals”

p.s. if you don’t then your in the wrong forum…

Well, Portal was a quite good game, but the ‘mod’ Portal: Prelude was far better. Trickier chambers, more stuff about the story itself, and the GLaDOS fight in the end was a triumph.

p.s.

Portal prelude ended up being overly confusing and the voice acting (or lack thereof) got annoying fast. For me, Portal was much better.

Portal was about thinking, Prelude was more about reflexes and flying down the hallway sideways to grab the cube while matrix-dodging the 20 surprise turrets that came out of the wall. Also, it had very, very precise jump puzzles that were impossible to pass if your fps was low.
