Mac/Windows/Linux?

I’ve used Ubuntu 9.04 and Opensolaris 2009.6 and Ubuntu is definitely the easiest and has the largest repository. But I’m waiting for Ubuntu 10.4 or maybe Kubuntu to incorporate a basic and STABLE driver for X-Fi. I still haven’t been able to get my X-Fi card to work under any Linux distro and it just sucks bollocks :frowning:

@loony
Cannot be helped.

Maybe not exactly the right thread for this, but us a 40GB partition adequate for a (K)Ubuntu installation? Thinking about dual booting it.

Also, as far as my experience tells me, Mac laptops are much more stable and reliable than other laptops, and are worth a bit of extra money if you want to stick to one laptop for more than a couple of years.

There are two important reasons why Windows is so dominant:
-Anyone who doesn’t know all that much about computers just buys one in a store somewhere, and those invariably have Windows pre-installed on them.
-Gamers generally use Windows because nearly all games are made for DirectX, which can’t be used on other operating systems, other than emulations. If all game companies were to start developing for OpenGL, you could play games on any OS.

I’ve had PC’s all the 18 or so years I’ve been fooling with computers. I’ve never EVER had one actually crap out on me. In fact, I still have my Easy Data that I used to play Doom on when it was new, as well as every other computer I’ve ever owned (including a couple laptops). They all still work and I’ve never had any of them go so bad that I’d have to completely re-format or anything and rarely have I had windows crash enough to require a reboot.

Fact is, if you’re not a complete n00b, there’s nothing at all wrong with windows (excluding ME >> )

Upgraded Ubuntu to 9.10, and it broke my touchpad. It didn’t work in 8.04, worked in 8.10, but they had to ruin my fun didn’t they.

Having a Mac is like having your intestines pulled out through your mouth everytime you sit on your computer :fffuuu:, having a PC is like being in 7th heaven everytime you sit on your computer  (assuming it’s not a 15 year old Walmart bought Piece-a-shit :meh  and having a Linux is like… well… no comment :’(
:freeman:

Sorry for 2xpost but I just had to…

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA        :

I was talking specifically about laptops and their reliability. I didn’t say anything about the OS.
I also said in my experience, so it’s very well possible that I’m wrong.

Depends on what you plan to install on it and whether you save all your files on that partition or on a separate one. But for any OS it’s more than enough.

Well, it could also be possible that it’s just my experience that PC laptops have no issues with longevity. I could have just been lucky?

I’ve got a Compaq laptop that belonged to my grandpa for a while that was from somewhere in the mid to late 90’s. Not exactly sure what year, but it has one of those LCD screens that make you cringe every time you look at it.

My mistake, I thought you were talking primarily about desktops.

About the Ubuntu installation, yes, I have a separate HD for my files, but I have no idea how much space programs would take up. I might just give it a try.

Oh the internet.

That is all I have to say about the “I’m a Mac, I’m a PC” commercials.

This was the topic was it not?

if we’re gonna do “mac Vs PC” in a half-life 2 mod discussion forum i’ve got
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-JdC04vBik

That should be more than enough.

You’re kidding right?

Alright, thanks.

There is one very big problem with he argument that “mac is better than pc”
its sort of like saying “ford is better than car.” When you dont specify something to compare something to, your argument really does not have a point in the first place.

In terms of OS, OS X IS easier to use, Because it has less opitons. when you dont have choices, things do seem to be easier.

Windows XP, Vista and 7, are "harder " because they are tools. If you dont know how to use something, it is harder to use.

Linux is useful because it is an open source OS, and has may features for programming that make it a useful tool. again, key word tool.

Agreed. I can see how a Mac OS X is nice because it’s got a user friendly interface and is virus free, but whenever my parents ask me for help (since I’m the computer geek in the family) I’ll occasionally find I have an idea what I should be doing but no idea how to actually go about doing it. The less options has the downside of making it harder for some more computer literate people to access the more advanced options.

Windows is also the only OS of the 3 that can pretty much gaurentee to be compatible with any software you want to download, which is why it almost always gets my vote.

I think the reason this argument of “which is better” can never truly die, though, like other format wars simply because of the unique attributes of each computer. Windows is good for gaming and software compatibility, Mac is good for photos, antivirus, and a little more casual desktop, and Linux is for the more advanced user. If any of the OS’s ever want to come out on top, they’ll need to take the goods from the other 2 OS’s to make them obsolete.

Not really. Windows still has something like 90% market share. The biggest threat to MS in the coming years will be Linux.
