Mac/Windows/Linux?

let’s all agree to disagree with someone who’s posted in this thread;
Windows Sucks B/C Vista was an epic fail
Mac Sucks B/C their old computers had no ability to play games that weren’t SPECIALLY MADE for apple computers.
LINUX… I can’t think of a reason WHY they suck.

I look at Macs like training wheels on a bike. Take them off when you want to go faster, fit in, and have stopped being a pussy and taken a few bruises. Once your extra wheels have come off, there is no reason to go back, and you really feel the power of a cheaper, better built, truly awesome machine.
In the words of a friend, “A mac is like buying a thousand dollar can of spraypaint, then supergluing the case together.”

You know what’s funny? Ever since I got Vista I haven’t EVER seen any of the problems you get. Oh but, wait! My PC isn’t total shit. Windows Vista is awesome and I can’t wait to get 7.

Macs are meh. I really like some of Apple’s hardware. Only problem is that Mac does jack shit and SURE I can put Windows on it with but, that makes it a PC not a Mac. (EDIT: Also apple hardware is fucking expensive as shit.)

Linux… Good luck.

There’s no use debating this.

Mac users are in denial and religiously defend Apple and all of their overpriced pseudo-niché products regardless of the fact that they’re getting less and paying more.

Linux users are woefully ignorant to reason and are too interested in being blindly individualist and believing they are part of some sort of super-cool alternative culture.

Windows users are everyone else, be them brainless common folk who click on popups, hardcore gamers, software developers, businesses, graphic designers, children…

Windows is the all-rounder, the useful, the practical, the one everyone basically knows how to use. It covers the widest spectrum of uses and users and if you disagree then you are a shitfaced liar.

You have a preference, therefore the above stated sentence is invalid.

^This.

I know the last place to actually be having a discussion about Windows vs. Mac is a computer gaming forum, since gamers are almost always going to go with Windows, but the only reason I’m “religiously” defending Apple is because people come out with some of the most unfounded crud as to why Apple is bad.

I fundamentally disagree that Macs just appeal to the niche market of people who want to look cool. That’s certainly a market, but I think the Mac is solid enough to appeal beyond that.

And they’re a little more expensive. I know they are. But if I’m investing the better part of $AUD2000, why wouldn’t I pay a few extra bucks? So what? I’d rather pay that money and then save the money on buying iWork for half the price as Office and using iLife which comes with the damn thing.

And just on a finicky little language point, how do you get less and pay more? Surely you’d just be doing one. Either you get less value for money, or you get the same value for more money.

…Or they want to pay no money for a functional operating system that will actually run on computers that are slightly less than ultra-modern.

I disagree that its more useful and/or more practical than any other O/S. You can do exactly the same work on any of the other O/Ss. It covers the widest spectrum of users only because the average Joe has grown up using them and doesn’t realise the alternatives.

Every time I see someone defending apple, I say to myself: sigh another one fell for it…

Apple is like a big joke impossible for stupid people to understand.

It’s a closed minded OEM company that would rather design their own GUI instead of just doing like every other OEM, and apple forces the customers to buy it, at the expense of having updated hardware.

Alright then, time to throw my $0.02 into the ring. I triple boot Snow Leopard, Windows 7, and a custom Debian deployment. All are great in their own rights.

Mac: I mainly use Snow Leopard when I’m working on graphics work, or need to work with video (hey, Final Cut Studio and Shake is hard to beat!) My photo collection is also maintained through Aperture, and Pixelmator, which I think is a fairly decent substitute for photoshop. My work in Maya also falls under this. Not having to download new drivers every time I plug in new hardware is awesome. (like the new all-in-one printer i just got)

Windows: I use Windows 7 for programming and gaming. I have a fairly wide collection of games (VALVe and not), and being able to switch between OSes within 2 mins is a great feature if I suddenly feel the urge to kill something. I’m also able to use Maya here, as well as 3DS Max for more intricate modelling.

Linux: Customization is killer. Almost anything you can think of can be tweaked here. Linux is also VERY light on my hardware, giving me more power to work with some programming software that I still use here, as well as the old, old copy of Shake I got for Linux. Being able to update almost every peice of software without rebooting is a great feature as well.

Basically, I’m with a few people in this thread that agree that each have their own merits, and It’s near impossible to compare, when they all deal with different problems. I’m personally more inclined to use Snow Leopard when I boot up in the mornings.

I’m interested in having a dualboot of Windows/Linux when I get a computer. What do you think is the best version of Linux?

Edit: Since people seem to point things out a lot on this forum I don’t have my own computer, I’m using my parents’.

It’s no different from most of the unfounded crud as to why Windows is bad.

Just sayin’.

If you like Macs, use 'em. If you don’t like Macs, don’t use 'em.
If you like Windows, use it. If you don’t like Windows, don’t use it.
If you like Linux, use it. If you don’t like Linux, don’t use it.

Comparing Macs to Windows to Linux is like comparing motorcycles to cars to Segways. Each have their own pros and cons. Saying that a motorcycle is better than a Segway because of the pros of the former and the cons of the latter, well, you haven’t any argument.

“Beer is better than a woman because beer won’t care if you go to another brand.”

That’s what I see in nearly EVERY OS flamewar. At least the beer one is funny.

Saying that in a computer gaming forum is like telling a group of hot girls that you still live in your parent’s house. (this is assuming you are older than 21)

I’m 17. Now just answer my damn question :hmph: .

Ubuntu is the easiest if you’re new to Linux, but it entirely depends what you want to use it for.
There are distributions for every use.

And also, what Aristo said.

EDIT:
DAMN NINJA’S ON THIS THREAD

I agree. But then I see this:

I’ve used Kubuntu a few times, and its proved to be pretty solid, and good for first time Linux users.

I’ve used Ubuntu before. Took me a while to figure out how to configure my internet connection but it worked fine. I tried Fedora as well but every time I tried to download a program from the list it froze. I ran both of them from my (2GB) flash drive so that might be the problem. I’ll try to install one of them on my 8GB one, hopefully one that saves itself when I shut it down.

If they’re good enough with computers to know what linux is they should be good enough to know how to acquire Windows in a costless manner. Last time I checked XP was still the most popular OS on the planet and probably still will be for at least another 4 years.

If you dual boot then I dare you to drop Windows. See how you really cope without it, and I’m willing to bet that if most dual booters were forced to only have one OS they’d opt for Windows. Oh and no using Wine otherwise you’re still proving that Windows is superior. :retard:

So the solution to Windows being expensive is to steal it? Nice. Your integrity exudes from every pore.

Yes, but that’s just a statement of fact; it doesn’t actually explain the reasons why.

I don’t see why using Windows for a program or two shows that its superior. If anything, it shows how rigid and behind software developers are for not developing for more platforms. You don’t have to drop Windows completely just to prove a point; you can be pragmatic in this too. So the example of telling dual booters to drop one operating system is defunct, because they’re clearly opting to use both as their preferred modus operandi, since most/all of the time they use both for different things.

And I don’t see how using WINE shows that Windows is superior. Surely the fact that you’re not using the O/S shows that you don’t think that Windows is better, and its just that the particular program you’re dealing with isn’t made for Linux. Saying “HA but everything is for Windows” is a poor reason for encouraging people to use the service, since it means that as soon as the programs people want (which is 90% of them) are available on other platforms, they’ll move to them.

ITT:
Bunch of immature gamer morons hating and one reasonable guy trying to prove them wrong without understanding that they don’t give a shit.

loony, stop wasting your time and knowledge on those kids. No one values it here.

Shall I take a look at your hard drive just to check there’s no illegally downloaded music or other media on it? I wouldn’t want you to be a hypocrite.

It must be the best OS, why else would it be the most popular? :3 The numbers don’t lie.

I’m making a point. I want people to justify why their OS is perfect for them, if they say Linux is perfect for them and then they use Wine, it’s a lot like someone who has bought a speed boat and then put up a mast with a sail on it because the engine doesn’t work but still says it’s the perfect speedboat.

The numbers do lie. They just say the status quo, not why it is or how it should be or will be in the future. The reason Windows is the dominant O/S is because of the Mac dropoff in the mid-late 90’s. With the re-emergence of Mac and the increase in open source programs and operating systems, Windows’ iron-grip on the industry is sure to soon loosen its grip.

I accept your point, but its all that we’ve really been talking about is relativity. Linux has its disadvantages, Mac has its disadvantages, Linux has its disadvantages. Its just about marrying them in a way that best suits your needs.

Well yes…but I’m not going onto websites and saying “hay guys, Modern Warfare 2 is awesome and I think you all should play it…but its overpriced so don’t pay the developers and download it!”. I didn’t chastise you for suggesting to download it, I suggested that saying that Windows was amazing and subverting the whole cost element by downloading it was a tad amoral. Its another element of having the best of all worlds, but it weakens your position substantially by doing so.
