Half-Life 3 is in development

My heart shudders evary tiem

Text adventure games can have controls similar to WSAD.

Go north.

I wouldn’t mind a story about Kleiner and Eli during the HL1 events to finally solidify their canon 100%

I keep saying it any chance I get, but I wanna see a “coming of rage” story where the two scientists are crash course trained by Barney to survive the fight to the surface while also trying to keep their own humanity in check when all order up and dips out.

I…er… am sorta-kinda writing a HL fanfic about that very thing. Sorta.

I’m just laying down the basic foundations of a story right now but I’m writing this mainly from the point of view of Eli Vance and I’ve gotten as far as the resonance cascade and Eli sending Gordon on his way through the facility. It needs a lot of work, though. I plan on writing about Eli and Kleiner meeting up with Barney (“from Black Mesa”), and fighting their way to the Topside Dormitories to rescue Eli’s family. When they get to the dormitories, however, Eli bears witness to his barracks-cum-home be riddled with bullets from the HECU.

Enraged, Eli kills the HECU soldiers and then despondently enters his home to find his wife Azian dead underneath a collapsed entertainment unit, gripping the photo you see later in the games, but no Alyx. There’s a gas leak in the barracks and he grabs the photo from his dead wife’s hands and flees the building just in time to escape the blast that obliterates the barracks.

Distraught, Eli rejoins Izzy and Barney just in time to begin the fight of their life against both the HECU and the Xenians. Later, they finally leave Black Mesa by the skin of their teeth just as the first Portal Storm hits. Somehow, Alyx suddenly appears in their vehicle. G-man had “plucked her” from Black Mesa, though it’s a mystery to the characters at the time.

Then I plan on continuing the story about how the four grow to be inseparable during the Seven Hour War and afterwards when Barney joins Civil Protection as a kind of mole. He uses his pull in CP to request all four of them transferred to City 17, where “it’s safer”. Then I’m going to tell the story about how Eli loses his leg to a bullsquid attack and I’ll end the story with Eli getting a call from Izzy saying that Gordon Freeman had just stepped into his lab.

Will need a lot of work and it may never see the light of day, but it’s something I’m writing whenever I get a chance.

That actually sounds pretty interesting. I’d read it if you wrote it.

For a while I’ve had the idea bouncing around in my head to write a HL2 fan fiction that covers the events of HL2 and the episodes from a different perspective, maybe a group of rebels in C17 or even combine-occupied New York.

I suppose it depends on how the market for Half-Life 2 fan fiction is.

Thanks. I have a copy here.

Still needs major work and is very much not finished, as I said, but you can see what I’ve done so far.

Uhm, didn’t Barney escape BM with Rosemberg in Blue Shift? Maybe you could use Otis for that role? Would be a good character to develop if you ask me… And they meet up with Barney on the way escaping from BM on road?
Just my two cents here…

Perhaps. Or perhaps I’m rejecting whether Blue Shift is canon or that the man in Blue Shift is the Barney from Half-Life 2. Has it ever been confirmed that the guard banging on the door in “Inbound” (and Blue Shift) is Barney from Half-Life 2?

It was in Blue Shift, and the HL1 expansions are officially “canon unless contradicted elsewhere”, so it’s safe enough to assume it’s true.

Well, I would really like the characters from expansions to really be expanded… Otis, Shephard, Rosemberg, Gina Cross, Collete Greene, Keller… If Calhoun got the chance, why not the other ones? Also, they could have easily used Rosenberg instead of coming up with new character of Magnuson. Let’s hope they do remember about them… Maybe use them in HL 3 ?

I hope you continue with that fan fiction x) I was enjoying it. It’s pretty good, just has a few errors in there that need fixing. I’ve been meaning to write a fanfic for HL for awhile now  I just never actually get anywhere. I figured it’d be good practice to begin with writing a lengthy fanfic before attempting a lengthier piece of work, like a novel…yet another thing I keep procrastinating xD

Thanks. Yeah, it was completely not proofread at all. I’ve been typing it on my smartphone during breaks at work and just threw it on Google Docs.

As to canonicity with Blue Shift and Half-Life 2, I do have to know (because I have not yet introduced the Barney character to the story yet), where can I see some official word on whether “Calhoun” from Blue Shift/guard knocking on the door in “Inbound” is Barney in Half-life 2?

There’s no specific evidence to believe or prove it wrong, but I like to believe in the idea. I mean, it kinda makes sense when you think about it, but I dunno.

Taken out of context this could be a post about religion.

Actually Barney is always called Calhoun in Blue Shift, and the name Barney is the name of that class of security guard (glock ones), and the name was used for the players to easily identify the guy in HL 2.

I think EP3/HL3 should end with Alyx being violently torn apart by the Borealis’ portal field.
You, on the other hand, will be destroyed in every way it is possible to be destroyed - and even in some which are essentially impossible!”

alyx nooo

And then you end up in Xen again. I so cross my fingers that we go there again.

I’ve always thought about Episode 3/HL3’s ending this way: you’re given a choice: use the weapon against the Combine, or listen to Eli and destroy it. This would lead to two completely different endings.

I guess that could work, like a throwback to the first game’s ending. Imagine if it turned out to be just as much an “illusion of free choice” as back then

I’ve always enjoyed writing with surprise endings. Because of that…

the perfect ending for the ENTIRE Half-Life franchise would be the reveal that everything that has taken place for all these years ( since the original release in 1998 ), has simply been the realization that you have been doing nothing but participating in the hazard course the entire time.

What an ending!

I swear I would bomb Valve HQ if that was real.

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
