They can just get a new actor and not make a big deal of it. If other games and even movies and TV shows can get away with it, I’m sure a voice can slide.
I get the feeling that Valve doesn’t actually know what they’re doing with the story and are just as clueless as we are in terms of pretty much every open question about the HL universe (or at least a good number of them).
Every third year?
That’s not bad at all.
Whoa, huge update to HL2, ep 1&2, lost coast, and others today. I still love my theory that Valve is secretly releasing episode 3 in small, decentralized content updates so that everyone who’s played HL2 and the episodes gets the third episode for free in apology for the long wait.
Eh, just a buncha VR stuff. Though I’ll admit, I’d love to give Half-Life: Source a try if I had an Oculus.
It’s not that there aren’t other possibilities! It’s that those are the only two options most developers seem to take.
Valve isn’t “most developers”, though… so we’ll have to see what happens.
I guess not. I don’t really play Halo (and I personally have no beef with it. The gameplay looks fine.), but every time a new one is announced everyone goes “OMG!” and I’m just sitting there saying “Yeah? You didn’t think they’d make another one?”. Like the trailer with Master Chief under the cloak. I knew it had to be him the second he came on screen. Snooore.
Don’t get me wrong, I HAAAATE waiting this long between games (Seriously. I got into this franchise several years AFTER Ep2 was released. There hasn’t been a new game in this series since I’ve joined it’s fanbase, barring Black Mesa, or Portal 2, if either of those count) but there’s a certain mystique around Half-Life. When will the next game come out? WILL there be a next one? Will it be anything like the previous installments, or will it be completely different?
I find this more exciting and interesting than releases every 3 years like clockwork.
But then again, I HAAAAATE waiting THIS long without knowing anything. I guess a new game around every 4-5 years with surprising unveilings would be good. I just don’t want there to be a day when I know the guy under the cloak is Gordon Freeman the second he walks into the frame. :freeman:
Even if it DOES become the end of Gordon (and I’m thinking that if they do it right, it might be the greatest thing ever), we still have competent fighters in Alyx, Adrian, and Barney (well, assuming he’s okay). I think playing as one of them (again in Barney and Shepard’s case) would be a neat idea. Gordon isn’t alone. That was the entire premise of Half-Life, wasn’t it? No matter how alone you thought you were, you weren’t. Someone was always there…somewhere.
Be them friend or foe.
(oh and you guys, it’s always going to be EPISODE 3. Not HL3. If an episodic franchise can still make money, there will always be 3 or more episodes)
I can’t really imagine playing Alyx or Barney. Now that we’ve come to know their personalities so well, stepping into their shoes would be strange. ESPECIALLY for Alyx. In order for it to TRUELY work they’d need to be able to talk, which would make it even weirder.
Shepard, on the other hand, which unlikely, is MORE likely. I know I’d like a ret-conned & cleaned up version of Opposing Force (Seriously, that game is a MESS story-wise), and a true sequel set during the seven hour war or something.
Also, forget episode 3, man. Valve declared the episodic structure as a failure looong ago. Besides, you think after almost seven years they’d release a measly EPISODE? Comon now.
So it’s weird to play as a character that can talk? Half-Life and Portal are the only Valve games with silent protagonists. What does it matter?
Then it’s not a sequel, is it? It’s a prequel. I want this story to advance, not wallow around sitting in it’s own piss.
Yes, of course, it’s not like Valve ever does anything slowly, of course not.
Can you guys please not start that pointless naming debate again? Whenever the next installment of Half Life comes out we’ll find out what it’s called, until then, arguing about what the name of a game will be is just going to annoy all of us.
Half-Life 2: Episode 2, Part the Second
Chapter B: Le Deux
They weren’t until you bought it up… :\
How’s about we just discuss what could be in the sequel and not worry too much about what it might be called.
What if HL3 is actually a videogame?
Exactly what else could it be to be warranted as a sequel installment in the series?
A card game?
“My Freeman deals 40 damage to your Houndeye”
A novel, that way we can get on with the damned story. Just kidding I don’t know how to read.
But novels don’t even have WASD control
Haha a card game would be interesting…
“Ha Gordon! You’ve fallen into my trap card!”
“Caused resonance cascade, lose 3 turns”
“Wore a ridiculous tie, move back 1 space”
“Destroyed tentacles, advance 3 spaces”
And of course the famous line said by Gordon said in episode 23 of the anime adaptation:
" "
Touching, isn’t it?
