It’s perfectly acceptable from a fan point of view to go the direction of ‘taking artistic liberties’ rather than ‘straight out of the HL2’ universe.
I’m ok with the lack of zombie headcrabs (honestly I doubt even a AAA movie could do that right, despite their awesomeness they even feel a bit cheesy in the Half Life games themselves).
I’m ok with the arm holographic computer. If the combine MAY have it, then the resistance can. It’s much easier to steal that than a TRUCK, if it’s potentially in the world then they could potentially have it. What I didn’t like was how long they chose to focus on it, it felt like a huge product placement.
Let’s not pretend that the combine are logically perfect (as someone else already pointed out). I think glowing eyes are an acceptable deviation and the red effect was pretty snazzy.
When the katana was pulled out I flipped a bit, and I’m sure someone did already own one (there are a lot of geeks out there with Katanas). And from the looks of this Brian Curtin guy he knows how to use one and do some flippy stuff. Second point, a bit TOO much flippy stuff but some of it was cool.
Too much awkwardly placed comedy. Do we even know what the combine are yet? Do they pee? It just felt awkward to see that scene, as well as a few others that seemed to have a small amount of humor that just didn’t really belong in such a small clip.
Acting could have been better, but it was made by the same folk so that’s fine. Overall, it was really nicely done, and they took the freedoms they wanted with it. Nice job folks!
(I can only imagine the outcry over the slight changes the BMS team takes)
