Windows 8

Remember when Microsoft cared mostly about functionality, not looks?

Windows need a rewrite.

We will see. But I would assume that if they had made any serious strides in improvement they would have announced that instead of a feature that all of 2% of their customers will use. Don’t you?

Most of them didn’t even watch the damn video I’m sure

I watched it. I wasn’t impressed.

Why would you be, when the only thing you probably do on your puter is playin vidya gaymes and occasionally typing stuff in word for uni/school?

Again, where do you get this 2%?

Did you actually study the market? Do you actually think that you are smarter then resident market specialists in MS?
Seriously, the guy in the video even started out with telling the audience about how the trends were atm

It’s not that hard to notice how many touch-compatible devices were showcased during the keynote.

As an outside example, if only 2% of consumers bothered to cash in for an iPad (like some of you kids ‘predicted’), Jobs wouldn’t bother with iPad 2. Consequently, MS wouldn’t bother with this Start screen and touch compatibility.

If anything, Windows 8 is going to boost sales of touch-screen devices.

My guess is there will be some minor OS improvements, nothing worth spending however much an upgrade will cost. Several months ago I heard rumors about integrated face recognition and things like that. Gimmicks not worth spending money on.

What I’m really curious about is it’s battery consumption on windows 8 tablets. My understanding is that part of the reason ipad gets so much battery life is because it’s running ios rather than a full blown operating system. So, while in the tablet oriented mosaic mode, will windows 8 have the consumption of WP7 os, or of a full-fledged os? If the tablet mode has a low battery consumption, then this is a pretty massive improvement that could be a huge ipad killer (in terms of quality, not sales). Or maybe I’m a complete dumbass and os has little effect on the battery life.

Edit: @ODB so the os does have a pretty significant effect on battery life because a full blown os is heavier on the hardware?

battery life depends on how much the components (RAM, CPU, GPU) are loaded.
P.S. And brightness of the screen obvsly

Here’s what we know so far.

Apparently Alcohol 120 and Daemon Tools do not have a bright future.

Hipster. Best thing for tablet computing atm.

define full blown.
In very basic terms, most battery consumption comes from active processes that require a lot of horsepower - high performance games, video encoding, rendering. As for simple processes like web browsing, picture viewing and simple idling - consumption is minimum since the hardware isn’t working 100%.
The more data is being processed - the more power it requires. So for example watching HD video would require more power than watching SD video… More times the memory is accessed, the more power it needs and so on… That’s also why you need a big PSU for highend video cards, CPUs and mobos - they are capable of processing a shitload of data.
The thing they do in W8 with HD video is they offload the CPU, which is good since when the CPU is 100% loaded, the consumption rises exponentially.

Full blown as in running the desktop version of windows.

Windows itself doesn’t consume much since very little data is required to be processed when it’s idling or web browsing.
Once again, when you watch an HD video or playing Crysis - a shitload of data is accessed by RAM / processed by CPU (or GPU) - therefore consumption rate rises alot.

Battery life mostly comes down to how much processing power you use. So naturally, there are both optimizations in software and improvements in hardware and batteries volume.

My point is that it’s being marketed as the next core Windows version primarily geared toward PC’s and it doesnt take a fucking analyst to know that at the very least 90% of all PC’s do not run touch screens. I may be pulling the percentage out of my ass but it’s not far off. It’ll be great for laptop and tablet manufacturers sure, but nobody who owns a desktop PC is going to go for it. If you think they are then you’re damned delusional. Also, I use my PC for a large variety of things. I use it for gaming, document authoring, artistic purposes, research, and for multimedia purposes.

Yeah, whatever, see you when it’s released.

Unfortunately, we’ll likely forget about this when it is, 'cause I would love to see you eat your words.

Irony.

Ladies, please, behave.

Damn bitches won’t shut up.

You guys are seriously dipshits. They have only shown 1 30 minute video and you already know there is nothing new for desktops?

The fact that its built to run well on tablets alone should be good news for desktop pc owners. Its going to be very well optimized because of this.

yeah, pay attention who you talkin to…

last thing we needed was you opening your damn mouth, hoe.

Argumentative sluts are in need of a stern slap in the face.

Don’t you have anything to do with yer life, feggit? Why don’t you finally get your post count to 3000 and suck it, granny?
