Why does time move so fast in the Half-Life universe?

/thread

uhh because youd be pissed if you had to play through ravenholm for 8 hours waiting for daylight
dumbass

I think the most obvious example of this is where the scientist in HL says “I swear it never swam in terrestrial waters until a week ago” when referring to the Ichthio thing.

I don’t know what you mean by that. I’m talking about the gradual shift of day to night instead of abruptly changing between chapters.

The Resonance Cascade caused the Earth to rotate faster.

[COLOR=‘Black’]A great many games don’t have realistic days and nights. It’s a video game.

Coastline / Nova Prospekt features a genuine and gradual shift from afternoon to night.
Same with the Canal maps.

I’m guessing you’re talking about the Ravenholm: ‘Suddenly… DAYTIME’ Thing.
My best guess is to emphasize the horrid misery of the ruined town by be having the player step out into fresh sunlight to contrast the gloomy disaster of Ravenholm.

Other then that.
Episode 1 seems (opinion alert!) to take place between 10:00am and 6:00pm.

Episode 2 is a different day (morning), when you wake up in the trainwreck, and throughout the episode, you spend the rest of the day GETTING to White Forest base, and defending it.

By the time the Portal Storm is counteracted, its till late-ish afternoon.

Episode 1 takes about 4-6 hours to play through, and that seems to match the time frame depicted in-game. Ditto with Episode 2.

It’s not confusing, its progression.

As for Half-Life 1… it was back in 1998, the gameplay was so good for the time, I don’t think fucks were given about the quick transitions from day to night.

Just my opinion.

Well, they had plenty of creatures before the resonance cascade so it was quite feasibly a week ago. Given that the thing is in a tank with a specially designed diving cage complete with dart gun.

this game is unrealistic I want my money back

Yeah that’s why I left out the HL2 episodes, they seemed to be a little more realistic with their days and nights. This isn’t a complaint by any means honestlyI enjoy the atmosphere I get while playing, it just seems a little odd why Valve would skip several hours at a time.

I’m pretty sure you just answered yourself there. Atmosphere.

Basically what Fancy said.
Making the plot progress without actually having the player spend X hours walking through the world.

This^

Drat. I was hoping for someone to have an answer from the devs themselves from an interview or something. But that doesn’t really answer my question. Even if it is for atmosphere, it goes ungodly fast. It should not be bright as hell outside immediately after it just started getting dark.

this is truly such a common sense question that its almost making me angry that you were stupid enough to ask it

Wow! You’re right it goes from day to night to day again in less than 30 minutes! :hmph:

Fancy…

Anyway, you can go ahead and lock this thread as I guess it’s served it’s purpose.

stupid questions AND using stupid memes
i hope you feel accomplished

You know, I really do.

Seriously, please lock the thread.

Inb4lockllolololololol

Dicks and cocks and cox and diks! That’s what this thread sucks, yessir! Feeling shortchanged by the jarring day to night progressions in Valve games? Here are some ideas: You could A.) Mod the game to your precious cycles, or B.) I don’t know, check out the ones that go on outside daily. Video games =/= real life.
