But that’s what makes it so effective, it also has way better pacing and “restraint” then most actual horror games, which in turn I think makes it effectively scary.
Maybe not in the BOOGALOO sense, but it’s more of an uneasiness, exacerbated by the open-ended areas
The thing is, I rarely headshot anything (don’t really aim for the head when I shoot at people - call it a habit from ArmA, where you need to hit the enemy anywhere it’ll render him combat ineffective, rather than go for a headshot guaranteed kill), so the Valiant is actually better for me.
Also, where can I buy DLCs (Bioware points) other than Origin? Origin won’t accept PayPal, retailer is a little more expensive than I’d like (pre-paid card sort of stuff), but I heard you can buy them directly at Bioware?
God, what did I play this weekend. I finished up Cave Story. Finished a run in Bastion and got halfway through a new one. Played To The Moon (all of it, in one sitting). Played all of Dear Esther. Played all of Braid.
I think it might be time for me to find a new hobby.
Solved my little problem… Spent about 10 hours playing the Citadel DLC for ME3. Fucking hilarious! The DLC took me about as much time to get through as a third of the base game. Armax Arena ftw
Also, I got the Lancer for SP there… didn’t get to upgrade it yet. But it’s fucking EPIC as a weapon on I, much better than my Avenger V (didn’t go for New Game Plus - don’t want to play something that isn’t directly an import from ME2 - so no level X weapons in SP for me)
Yeah, that’s not the best ending. The best ending, IIRC, requires you to [color=’#171717’]save Booster and Curly, the latter of whom reveals a lot more of the plot. There’s also a few stupidly hard hidden levels along the way.
There are plenty of hints to it in the form of basically everything that doesn’t seem to serve any purpose, like the broken teleporter in the pit Booster falls into and the abandoned cabin in the waterway. But the steps required to get the best ending are so weird that you basically have to read a guide to figure them out, and even then it’s really hard. At one point you have to make a jump that’s so tricky there’s a red line on the platform to show you where to jump from.
That game has a lot of really cool hidden shit, like the nemesis and the bubbler. Did you know that you can go all the way back to the hermit’s house at the beginning when you return to the abandoned Mimiga village? If you kept the polar star pistol, you unlock the best weapon in the game there.
I can’t remember if I posted in here already but I finished up Serious Sam TFE. I’m also close to beating the first Thief game. I just finished the level with the opera house and just have the air talisman to find before I can get into the haunted cathedral. Also bought Gunpoint and went through a few levels in it.
Played a little Final Fantasy VIII. Apparently my latest save file put me in an unwinnable position, because I can’t exit Balamb to grind for XP. Some Galbadian fuckwit is blocking the way. I’ll have to roll back two saves to un-fuck myself. FUCK.
Playing Wipeout HD/Fury. Unlocked the eighth tier of the Wipeout HD events. Every single event is at Phantom speed. There’s a reason they call this set of events “Meltdown.” Holy fuck, it took me five tries to get a silver medal on the first track, and this is on Novice AI difficulty.
Having another go through System Shock 2, using the latest unofficial v2.42 patch and incorporating all the pertinent graphics mods. It always had incredible gameplay, and with the added visual improvements, it’s come a long way from how it originally looked.
I decided to take on the long and arduous task of going through and tweaking/updating almost all of the sound files (just one folder left to do) to sonically ramp up the atmosphere and immersion factors even more. Now, the auditory and visual dread the game portrays is truly fantast… ah… er… gotta go… have to avoid getting caught by… “the many”… they’re calling to me… must… resist…
Not sure if sarcasm or not, but on the note that it’s not:
Yeah it’s pretty fun. A little slow at first, but it doesn’t feel too clunky and I havent hit any severe glitches. It looks pretty fucking awesome too, even when on a console, stuck at a defined graphics level.
Edit: Though the facial designs are rather…blah. And they don’t register any emotion. The voice-acting is good though, almost making up for the fact that everyone looks like
I tried to save Curly in Cave Story in two separate runs and botched it each time, finally looked up how, and wow, how fucking bizarre and arbitrary is that. I may take a break from this game for a while and try again later.
Replaying all the MGS games. Right now I just beat the hind in MGS1. After that I’ll be getting the legacy pack to play 2, 3, and PW (which I haven’t played before) HD and then 4. Can’t remember if PW or 4 came first. I think 4 did.
