Well, take this with a grain of salt because I’m only five hours in, but I think it’s worth the prices you’re likely to find it at (~$75). I mean I’m five hours in and barely started, but it went by fast because I was having fun and getting into the story. So for a game of this amount and quality of content I feel like it would be worth the high price. (I am hoping my friend will let me finish the game though so I don’t have to buy it right now though
)
Some comments on the game itself, if it helps inform your decisions any:
-You’ll probably find this game a mix of familiarity and freshness. It looks kinda like Final Fantasy, it plays kinda like KOTOR, and sounds kinda like the cast of Sherlock playing Chrono Trigger, but it does everything well. It’s different enough to be interesting, but familiar enough for you to pick up pretty quickly.
-Most of the main characters are quite likable. The British VAs lend a unique personality to the game and to their characters. Additionally, I think the characters are probably just better written than in most JRPGs. The main hero isn’t some whiny idiot, nor is he some bombastically inspirational figure. He’s just a normal guy, albeit rather intelligent and scientific, trying to figure out mysteries that intrigue him and do what he thinks is right.
-The soundtrack is great. Even if it was just the song “You Will Know Our Names”, it would still be amazing.
-Gameplay is fun and engaging. As I mentioned earlier, it reminds me a bit of KOTOR, although much more fluid and dynamic, allowing you to lock on and circle enemies while you choose special attacks that have enhanced effects depending on where you hit the enemy with it. The more active combat system is probably why there are no consumable combat items - all healing, buffing, and reviving is done by abilities or built into the combat system so you don’t have to leave the action to browse a menu.
-The world is pretty open so far. Not like and Elder Scrolls game but already better than later Final Fantasy games, and just judging from a very rough “world map”, the whole world is going to be huge.
-You can buy a bikini top and bottom for your female companion from the first shop owner in the game. I would be kind of upset but it kind of crosses the border into ridiculous. Plus you don’t have to make her wear it, there are other options that give better bonuses in other stats. Plus you can put your dudes into swim trunks if you really wanna.
-Graphics are definitely on the low end. It looks good for a Wii game, but that’s not saying much. Fortunately you’ll probably won’t even notice, given how engaging the actual game is.
TL;DR - I’m really loving this game and I think other RPG fans will love it too.
