What Game Did You Play Today?

So I got Wolfenstien: The New Order

Well…it’s definitely fun, gameplay wise. I’m having an absolute blast with it. The guns feel perfectly balanced, and the stealth feels rather rewarding when you manage to get through the bits without being spotted. The plot is fun and interesting, including the little pieces you can learn about the 14 years you spent comatose and the lore on the current nazi regime. The characters are fairly well done, with very nice voice acting and development. I like the tie ins to both other Wolfenstien games (both RTCW and that sad excuse of a reboot).

Now…for my complaints.

Facial animations are absolutely utter shite. They constantly look straight faced, or they have this weird grimace or their mouth open in shock. There’s no change, no matter what happens, and it kinda ruins the immersion for me. Blasko has this horrible monologue thing going on the entire time that just makes me feel foolish while I’m playing. He doesn’t ever talk to anyone but himself (no wonder he was in an asylum :p) unless it’s a cutscene of some sort. My final, and biggest complaint, is the textures…fucking mega textures really did the graphical quality no favors in my opinion. It looks like a reskinned Doom 3 usually, and while Doom 3 was nice when it came out (and looks wonderful when modded and/or on ultra quality still today) Wolfenstein did not improve much on the standards with the new engine. Also, I hated that damn download time and size.

All in all, I give it a 7.5/10

Mostly due to the texturing and animations not having improved in a decade or so.

Edit: also…seriously, I fucking hated that ending. In a good way. I hated it in a good way. Fucking feels.

Obligatory tangentially related video.

Downloaded Warface through Steam the other night to try it out (without reading much about it beforehand)

Encountered this:

Ping: ~380ms, ~220 to ~300ms (west/east coast) or ~420ms :meh:

EDIT: Played through a co-op game on the NA server, quite laggy (as expected) and I didn’t particularly enjoy the gameplay.
The game runs very well (>140fps, no stutter), graphics aren’t up to the same level as other games on CryEngine 2 or 3 though.

Unless we have our own servers, which most games I find don’t, we get shafted everywhere ping wise. ._.

Yeah. Even servers in Singapore still result in a ping that’s too high for playing some game genres comfortably. (I wonder how much it’d be improved if I had a FTTH internet connection…)

Finished Outlast just now. Superb game… until the end. I’ll let you know why in the 191919 text (as it’s a major spoiler):

[COLOR=’#191919’]Once you “escape” from the asylum, you go to this underground laboratory and that’s where the game basically falls apart in my opinion. Your task is to kill “Billy” who is the originator of the madness in the asylum. You have to do three tasks to kill Billy as the Walrider (I’m assuming that’s Billy’s ghost) chases you down; if it catches you, I’m assuming it jumps into your body and blows your brain apart Scanners-style. Either way, I finished the three tasks and killed Billy. But his ghost roughs me up something fierce and then apparently vanishes. As I limp to the exit, the doors open and I’m gunned down by the military because I’m now the “carrier” of the Walrider (I’m assuming). Credits roll. No after credits sequence. I feel unfulfilled and betrayed. The game was good up until the underground labs. Why did they have to jump the shark in that way?

Planetside 2 actually has a dedicated Australian server. I can see why now.

Managed to beat a terror mission in Xcom. All the civilians died, all but 2 of my soldiers died, and I got a poor rating, but I beat it. And Australia lowered its funding amount that I get. Stupid Australia.

I wish Planetside 2 was as fun for me as the first one was. I just never got into it. I think about loading up my character again some days, but I never do.

Skyward Sword. I still can’t really figure out the hate for this game…

I was pretty happy when they announced Briggs.
It’s a shame we don’t seem to have enough players for all of the continents (maybe I’m not playing at the right time of day)

I wish I’d been able to try the first game when it was originally released. Didn’t have internet access back then…

They actually just released a feature called “continent locking”, where continents are closed off based on who won an alert or conquered them. It really helps keep the fights concentrated.

It’s amazing how not-fun Transistor’s combat system is. There’s no way to block or counter enemy attacks, and it’s incredibly rare that there’s an attack you’re fast enough to outrun. You’re all but forced to rely on the Turn() function, which stops time and allows you to plot out a series of moves and attacks that your character then performs at super speed. Sort of like VATS in Fallout - and you’d better believe that it’s just as fun and immersive!!1! If you like VATS, we can no longer be friends and I hate you.

But, after you’ve done a Turn(), you can’t use any of your attacks again until it’s recharged, forcing you to go on the defensive… which, as I just noted, your character is completely incapable of doing. And if you get killed while the Turn() is recharging, another one of your functions (your combat abilities) overloads, seemingly at random, and gets knocked out for the rest of the battle. So, as the battle gets harder, and your character dies over and over, being mobbed by enemies that she can’t block or avoid… you get FUCKING WEAKER.

Even worse, nearly all of the functions have huge charge-up or cool-down times that lock your character in place - even the ones that operate at melee- and mid-range. There’s a function called Jaunt() that you can install on one of your other functions to make it fire more quickly, but if you put Jaunt() in an upgrade slot, then you can’t have it in a primary slot, where it will give you the ability to teleport a short distance straight forward - the only evasive action I’ve yet encountered in the whole game.

In Bastion you had an evasive roll and the bullhead shield, which gave you the ability to block, avoid, or counter many enemy attacks. I don’t know what possessed Supergiant to take that away and rely on some half-baked hybrid turn-based and real-time combat system that your character is completely ill-suited for. Transistor is gorgeous, and because it’s in largely the same style as Bastion, I wanted to love it so bad, but it’s garbage. And I haven’t even said anything about the storytelling.

Reinstalled MGS2 for PC to see if I could fix the issues I was having and I managed to get it working nearly flawlessly. Controls are still an issue (and the “weak” command which is supposed to compensate for no pressure sensitivity isn’t working), can’t get aa working, and occasionally videos shown in the codec don’t work but it’s a lot better than how it was last time I tried.

Playing me some Metroid Prime: Echoes

Played some Max Payne 3 for my livestream.

I still have some major problems with this game in terms of the mechanics and design. But the game “feels” much better when played on PC.

Prime 1 is betterrrrrrrr

Of course it is xD that’s why I’ve never beaten Echoes. I prefer the first one over the other 2, and echoes has really annoying spots. God I remember when I played that game way long ago when it came out x) I was 10 I think

Edit: actually, I mighta been 12.

Fuck the spider guardian.

I said that about several boss fights in all three of those games xD
