Started Metro 2033. Actually had to turn quite a few things down. Is it just not optimized too well, or is it really graphically demanding? :S
Also played a bit more Stalker: Lost Alpha. I’ve been getting a lot less crashes than I used to which is nice (1 so far and I’m “30 minutes in”, compared to like 10-15 I had before). Emissions/blowouts/psi-storms look so damn cool with Dynamic DX10 lighting, holy crap.
It’s pretty demanding on maximum settings.
I’ve heard that Metro: Last Light is better optimised and better looking.
The advanced DOF effect is apparently particularly demanding - one of the first things you should turn down if you haven’t already.
Switching from 4xMSAA to AAA might boost performance enough for you to be able to turn some other stuff up.
Surface areas are more intensive than underground - maybe configure your settings for ideal performance once you’re out there (first time I played I nearly got killed by nosalises because performance dropped down to <=20fps)
It’s a little of both. Turn off the advanced dof and I think I heard the tessellation is poorly implemented as well. And in Last Light they replaced the msaa with ssaa because they said with their engine they had pretty much the same performance hit, which I would assume happens in 2033 as well, so use AAA, which is post processing. The rerelease of the game is supposedly much more optimized so I can’t wait to see that in action.
I’m on Friday in Postal 2. Pretty fun game. I know it’s getting a new expansion this year but I wonder if RWS will ever make a new full game.
Does anyone know a way to lock the framerate of UE2 games? Is it the same bsmoothframerate as UE3? I had a similar issue with Source where if the max framerate is too high, even with vsync on, the game feels less smooth. And I can’t get PrecisionX to work with it.
Edit: Also, machete is my favorite weapon, though it doesn’t seem to hit as much as it should when I throw it.
My previous game before the patch, I only got up to finishing saving Fox, so not very far in. Now I’m up to the Agroprom underground (I think).
Encountered my first bloodsucker and nearly screamed, oh lord ;_;
Otherwise it’s been pretty good. Learning to manage my weight is a little tricky since I’ve never played the stalker games, so I hate having to leave all the guns behind.
A few questions.
Can you only unload found weapons if you equip them first? It seems that way with me, but maybe I’m doing something wrong? It won’t let me do it in the inventory if it’s not on me.
Is there any disadvantage to just sleeping during the night and essentially have an “all-day” playthrough? The dark caves and stuff still scare the crap out of me, but if I’m wimpy enough and won’t have any bad repercussions, I might just do that. Playing at night is part of the experience and all, but ehhh I’ll pass on that.
Do I just keep saving this high grade/armor piercing ammo? I keep thinking it’s going to be important later or something so I’ve been saving it.
Any other general tips/advice before I continue on my merry stalker way? I like being pretty newbie since I imagine I’ll replay the game and laugh at how much I missed, but if there is anything mildly useful that I should know for my first playthrough, I’ll take it.
I think you can unload weapons anywhere. At least that’s what I remember from the other Stalker games but I could be wrong. If it only lets you do it with equipped weapons then that’s what you have to do I guess.
Not that I know of. I usually do that too because it’s impossible to see at night.
Later enemies in the other games are more heavily armored and I think armor piercing is good against mutants as well. It’s not necessary to use armor piercing though.
Can’t think of anything specific at the moment. You should always use the gun sights if possible but that should be obvious. Don’t equip artifacts until you have one that negates radiation or you’ll have a bad time.
I’m hugely like “OH GOD THE DARK I’M TOO SCARED”. Like I knew where a pack of blind dogs were (with 1-2 pseudodogs mixed in), and during the day I just ran past them since I didn’t want to waste bullets for nothing, but I knew there was the chance Chimeras were around so I didn’t want to chance it at night.
Plus yeah, visibility is god awful. Hopefully once I get night vision I might brave the dark conditions.
Played more Stalker: LA. Faced 2-3 burers underground. Actually not that hard with appropriate cover, since you just hide, wait out the shield then take more shots. It’s the glowing menancing eyes in the dark that freak my shit out.
Bloodsuckers though. Fast, strong and decent bullet soaks. Scare the living fuck out of me. -shudder-
So much running from place to place, with not a merchant around till I reach that Duty base thing.
Also played some Metro 2033. Found out why it was running at such a low FPS (anywhere from 25 to 40). I had it running on DX11, so I tried DX10 and still no change. Turned it to DX9 and it shot up to over 65 FPS pretty smoothly on the “high” preset (Is the game a quickly done port?, because it seems to lack lots of individual settings).
Not sure what that’s affected or how it works, since I’m not very savvy with that kind of stuff, but if it works, I’ll take it.
Just did the first chapter. During the rail cart shooting bit, I clearly didn’t read the pop up tool and was going “WHY ISNT THE SHOTGUN FIRING BOTH SHOTS, I HAVE TO KEEP RELOADING”. Like 6 monsters in I realised I could use right mouse click too…
Reading is too hard for me, apparently.
Burers are easy to just run up to and slice with your knife. At least in the earlier games. I think Lost Alpha made them harder.
And I’m not really sure if Metro 2033 was a console port. It could be or it could just be Ukrainian programming as CoP also ran really poorly in DX11 mode compared to DX10 or DX9. They do a really good job generally on the PC version regardless though. Last Light is much, much more optimized than 2033 is.
I made it to highland park before finally getting sick of stealth, and deciding to go guns blazing instead. The game is so much better this way. <3 the explosive revolver.
