Oh, I really hope that’s true. Would be pretty neat to have his music again.
Also, didn’t Valve trademark DOA shortly before announcing DOTA 2?

Fun Facts: Half Life Trademark requested 1997, released 1998, 1999 Trademark granted.
Dota 2 Trademark requested 2011, granted 2012, Counter Strike requested 2001 (granted 2003). Source: hlportal.de Moderator Post .
So you see, there’s time between the Request and the grant. Second Thing is, they requested it for the european market, to provide a good ground for HL3.
Yes, there could be the possibility that we see HL3 in the next years, but it doesn’t have to be. So everyone calm your tits.
I personally would like it more if they open Source 2 with Left 4 Dead 3. Because if they fuck up somehow or there are things that don’t work so well they can gather feedback and improve to give us the best possible HL3 experience
That’s quite interesting. Do you know if they’ve ever requested trademarks, and then DIDN’T act on them? If not, then I’d say there’s a decent chance we’ll hear something in the next few years.
I feel the same way. Let them test out their fancy new engine on something else.
I looked it up and apparently Valve announced Dota in the same month they trademarked it? That bodes well.
I’m still betting that HL3 will be the Steambox launch title.
…The Steam Machines are coming out in 2014, no? I doubt HL3 will be ready be then, unless it’s incredibly lame…
One thing, though: I wouldn’t be surprised if they don’t release it for the next Gen consoles and keep it exclusive to PC ('n Mac 'n Linux) and Steam Machine.
It could be, no one knows how long they’ve been working on it or how much progress they’ve made. Anything is possible.
Think about it. Their biggest IP, on a new engine, fully integrated with SteamOS, being released together with Steambox. It sounds like a great business strategy to me.
It would be an amazing business strategy. I’m just doubtful it’ll work out that way.
It’s possible that they’ve been working on the game for a very long time and are just about done with it.
I’ll remain reserved about this, however, until something official comes out. Then there won’t be enough salve in the word to calm my tits.
Yeah because SIX YEARS in development isn’t enough.
The game could have been in development for the past six years, but to my knowledge, the last time Valve’s Jira leaked, very few people were on the project, and I remember hearing the rumor (Yes, it was a rumor, I know) that a person touring Valve asked about Half-Life 3, and was told it’s in “bits and pieces”.
Here’s the “source” on that. I just want to say, I am not saying this was by any means true, but I just had it in my head.
You guys may be right! Trust me, I hope you are!
However, I really do think that this is something that they’re just getting around to, with the three Steam-related announcements behind them. Previously mentioned rumor or not.
Bits and pieces can come together like a puzzle, things falling into place relatively quickly. I don’t know any more than what I’ve read but there’s no reason to assume that Valve wasn’t working on anything Half-Life related since the release of Episode 2.
That’s true! Let’s hope!
There is a reason the games industry is notorious for hiring and then laying off a lot of employees. That is because staff needed for different stages of development is different.
I thought Adam Foster had been working on HL2: Episode Three since being hired at Valve, but also worked on Portal 2. I did see his name in that employee list, both under “Half Life 3” and “Half Life 3: Core Team.” This probably means he’s been one of the people working on the game the longest.
I’m not sure how good he is with coding, but his main claim to fame, MINERVA: Metastasis, didn’t have many custom assets in it. There were a few, mostly attributed to others. I think the codefix for Minerva’s speech functions was done by him, but his primary expertise is level design.
Now, here’s where my theory starts going crazy. MINERVA was acclaimed because the maps were very large and twisted about, interconnecting amongst themselves like real buildings. Presumably, if the rumor about Episode Three/ HL3 going open world are true, Adam would almost certainly be part of a core team to bring a non-linear focus to traditional HL level design. We should go and ask him on his blog.
Also, according to the new Jira leak, Doug Church (System Shock, Ultima, Thief, and Deus Ex) is also in the HL3 team. Many of these were less-linear games, so it is quite possible that the reason the game is taking so long is because of the focus on non-linear map layouts. Episode Two’s strider defense map, despite being only one map in the game, took nearly six months to test. If most of HL3’s maps are nonlinear, this could also explain some of the delay.
this is where you get it wrong
