The "Shotgun Scientist"

So I have an idea. But before I can go through with it I need to know some things:

What info is known about a shotgun scientist I’ve heard about?

Does he have any canon story related to him, however little?

Is this character seen anywhere in-game (Valve games, mind you)?

Gordon IS the Shotgun Scientist you ninjacomdoodoo.

So what about this:

In the Half-Life DM the icon for the model above is a scientist holding a shotgun, you’re telling me that that is not refered to as the shotgun scientist?

The scientist outside the transporter to Xen with the shotgun (with the guard) does not have an official name or official story. It’s just “a scientist with a shotgun”. Officially, the only scientist that is named (other than Freeman) post-HL1 and identified as canon is Eli Vance, who is the black scientist who lets you out of the test chamber and wants you to tell people that they are stranded down there. Unofficially, the scientist next to Eli is Kleiner and the guard banging on the security door during “Inbound” is Barney, and that’s how they’ll appear in BM.

All other scientists are unnamed (except for those that are identified ingame such as “Peters” who switched on the surgical unit and Smithers who is hiding on top of the power generator) and they don’t have backstories.

Beyond that, there could be fanfiction written about these characters…

^he said it pretty good.

There is no “shotgun scientist.” It’s just a random scientist holding a gun in a late chapter in Half-Life for aesthetic reasons more than anything. That one scientist was scripted and didn’t use it on anything and I doubt the scientists in Black Mesa source will use shotguns, let alone pistols either.

and OP, the answer is no for all three of your questions.

What about Dr Magnussen? I always enjoyed microwaving the fuck out of his meal until it exploded.

Magnusson was invented for Episode 2 and retconned into the HL universe. Sometimes I wish Valve hadn’t associated him with anything in particular from the past games and was simply a scientist that used to work somewhere else before the Combine invasion.

As far as shotgun scientists go, there is a dead scientist with a shotgun seen in Blue Shift.

That’s canon. And a dead scientist consisting of no importance or anything at all other than being a dead scientist with a gun nearby him. Why are you girls over-analyzing shit so much? It doesn’t even matter.

so many newfags. it hurts.

That was Magnusson’s casserole but Magnusson was not around.

My hypothesis is that Magnusson conscripted one of those two scientists to “watch” his meal as it was being microwaved. And he got upbraided by Magnusson until the resonance cascade happened.

Another option, if you don’t blow up the microwave, is that the resonance cascade destroys the meal and, since you shoved the cart into the beam, Magnusson still blamed you for it. A huge dimensional cross-rip causing many aliens to teleport in, killing many people, and alerting the Combine to subjugate mankind for decades, and all that Magnusson can do is think about, with regards to Freeman, is his destroyed casserole.

Oh dear God, I think you just thought about that longer than valve.

much simpler explanation: just because it is possible, the story will assume that you did it.

so then its just pure coincidence that kleiner shows up with a shotgun after you used the combine teleporter in hl2?

(I think we are onto something here)

danielsangeo, who’s the girl in your avatar?

She intrigues me.

ellen page

Yes, that is, indeed, Ellen Page.

I think it’s possible to kill half the scientists and not kill any Alien Slaves.

Much cooler explanation: Valve monitored a hundred playtesters and canonically sides with the most common action or solution to every problem the game presented.

They also copied anything the player said while playing, but it turns out playtesters rarely talk to characters in a game, ergo Gordon is perceived as quiet.

Guys its Dr.Kliener. The model was a Kliener in Half Life 1 when you go to the XEN Teleport machine. Same happens with Kliener in Half Life 2 when you come back 3 weeks after using the combine teleport machine and when you open the lab door Kliener sticks a shotgun through the lab door thinking you are combine.
