Portal 2 endings (major spoilers)

That’s just what Cave Johnson WANTS you to think!

Also, regarding the ending (as this is a thread with the words “major spoilers” in it, I feel no qualms about spoiling, but will still warn ahead, just in case):

This is the same story universe as Half-Life (Black Mesa/Aperture Science). In Half-Life 2, the Combine have taken over and spoiled the world. At the end of Portal 2, you see Earth from two vantage points: One, after you put a portal on the Moon and you end up holding on for dear life to Wheatley and you can see the Earth from there…and two, once you’re “kicked out” of the testing facility, you see a lush field of wheat (I believe) surrounding a nondescript shed.

So, my view from this is: You see the field of wheat and the view of Earth from the Moon as you would expect them today. What I conclude from both of these (mere speculation, understand) is that the Combine, by whatever year that Portal 2 is set, is gone and that the Earth is “back to normal”. Whether this means that humanity has survived or not, however, is anyone’s guess, but I do believe that the Combine will be ultimately destroyed/driven off Earth.

Thoughts?

That means Valve just spoiled the end of Half Life Episode 3

Ok no seriously, where the fuck did Charlotte come from?!

Valve got the picture of earth from NASA, I read it in the credits. Valve didn’t have time to/didn’t think about editing it.

When I was about to get out, I thought “great, once I come out of this door I’ll be surrounded by the combine”, but when I first got out, I thought that a soldier would be right behind the door because Chell turned so slowly. So I freaked out when the companion cube fell out.

tomato/tomato :retard:

I know that Valve got the picture from NASA but I believe Valve isn’t that sloppy to “not have time to/think about editing it”. You only see Earth from the Moon for a couple seconds, you could simply cast a brownish hue to the oceans (would take all of 15 seconds in Photoshop), but when you exit the shed, the field looked, well, well-tended, and that took much more time than simply sticking a picture of the Earth on a one-sided square.

No, it was calculated. I don’t know what they were calculating, but it’s something.

Or not.

i hate the fact that there were no Pneumatic Diversity Vent :meh:

EDIT: aaand, when you are saving the game it says “please do not turn off your console”
lots of the game feels like a console port :frowning:

He’s from bloomin’ Bristol, other side of the planet

Please, this is Valve, possibly one of the most PC-centric developers out there. They’ve said that a console string accidentally got mixed into the PC code, and there is nothing else that looks even remotely like it was primarily developed for console

I think they will appear in DLCs, and I guess they will be free.

Just because it says so, doesn’t mean that it is a console port. The difference isn’t that huge like it is in Crysis 2.

just finished it, very disapoint

Spoiler:

Companion Cube is alive.

Ending was amazing. Whoever said they didn’t like it needs to stfu. And yeah, Valve wouldn’t show us a good looking present day Earth unless they actually wanted us to see a good looking present day Earth. Clearly intentional.

spoiler (do we really have to keep putting these tags when the thread title itself has them???)
And who the fuck is Charlotte? From the context I’m assuming she’s GlaDos’s former self. If that’s the case, the name’s Caroline, not Charlotte.

I really don’t know much about wheat, but I don’t think that field was well tended. Looked like the environment was just right for wheat so it started sprouting up everywhere. I think other human life is left entirely unanswered, but my guess is there is a decent sized, but nothing compared to today, population left. Whether or not any of that population is in Ohio could be a problem for Chell.

Also, a question, who is Chell? I’ve always assumed she was one of the daughters from bring your daughter to work day, is that right?

And finally, it looks like we’re not going to have a Portal 3, the ending pretty much sealed that. I’m okay with it though, with mods and DLCs, I think I’ll be able to get as much as I want out of the whole Portal concept. ON WITH EP3 (and DoTa)!!!

I already finished it, there is only 1 ending and it is awesome.
This is the real ending.

WOAH YOU ALREADY BEAT IT SO FAST

Just want to point out a few things. Aperture Science’s testing facility was originally a converted salt mine in the hills of Montana or some shit. there’s a news paper in the 1950’s reception room with the headline as cave buying a salt mine for science. The combine are in the russia or one of the neighboring countries, thousands of miles apart, it’s very possible that the combine’s reach hasn’t gotten there yet. What i’m really trying to get at is, a few of your assumptions are off base.

It’s a wheat field…

If you take old-field succession into account, there is civilization of some kind near.

You think the Combine didn’t get to North America yet? Lol…have you ever wondered why basically everyone is City 17 speaks like they’re from the USA? The Combine was relocating people to City 17, because from what we can gather in HL2, humanity is nearly extinct.

You’re still missing my point. My point is that just because the combine is on the planet doesn’t mean that they’re everywhere. Just because we see the combine in the russian states doesn’t mean that we’re going to see them in a random wheat field in the middle of fucking Montana. That’s ALL i’m saying

I might be wrong, but I don’t think it’s a wheat field guys, that’s just what the northern plains looks like in summer when everything is dried out. If it is in Minnesota (or even certain parts of western Ohio, I saw that mentioned) and civilization had been gone for a few hundred years, that’s exactly what it might look like.

It’s in a vacant field… That’s why it looks normal.

Why would you expect there to be ruins of anything… when there’s nothing to be ruined.

Could be in HL2 time. Could be later. Could even be before.

We’ll never know.

Well they continuously state that you were in suspension for a very very long time, isn’t that enough to confirm it’s been a long time after HL2?
