Portal 2 endings (major spoilers)

Can I just note here that Valve realizes that this makes no physical sense, time wise, and doesn’t care. Its in the dev commentary.

Sure, you can note that. Won’t stop fans from caring though. Just like all those canonicity freaks. They’ve driven Marc Laidlaw up the wall with questions even after he said he was tired of the debates over canon.

The biggest problem with shooting the portal gun at the moon is the fact that the portal gun only seems to work on hard, flat surfaces & that the surface of the moon isn’t exactly flat.

Not really. You need a precision instrument, like the one they used on Mythbusters, to hit a specific spot on the moon, like a reflector and return the laser to hit the receiver on Earth…but if you’re just shooting at the moon without worrying about hitting a specific target, then it’s much easier.

It’s just completely lucky that she managed to hit just outside Tranquility Base. Or perhaps there’s more than luck here and the Apollo 11 astronauts put more on the moon than they told us and had a tracking beacon of some sort to guide the portal beam to that spot. But, maybe it was just luck.

OR THE FACT THAT IT’S A FRICKIN’ VIDEO GAME. :tired:

Dias: It’s flat enough.

I just found your post informative.

Also: To find out if the portal gun can pop a portal at the moon, we first have to find out what the portal gun shoots, how fast it shoots it and what the portals are made from.

There can be a lot of theories, but there is no physical evidence that you can shoot matter (or possibly anti-matter) out of a device and create an interdimensional rift/particle splitter that can transport mass from one place to another instantly.

Short said, we need a physical portal device before we can get the data to really answer this question.

Not a problem at all. When Cave first introduces the white gel he says it’s made out of crushed moon rocks which are really good portal conductors. So apparently whatever the moon is made out of holds portals very well.

That’s true, but portals still need to be placed on relatively flat surfaces & the moon is quite rocky & sandy.

It doesn’t matter how unlikely it is that Chell could have hit a flat spot on the moon from Earth with a hand held portal gun. In the context of the game, it could and it did happen, and nothing is going to change that. Even if it were possible to confirm or deny that that were possible in real life, it doesn’t matter, because Portal 2 is what’s known as fiction. As in, not real. Besides, Rule of Cool - it was wicked sweet, so just let it slide. Don’t be so pedantic and enjoy it for what it is.

The fact that its a 1 in a million shot is there just to ramp up the awesomeness of the scene. When you think about it you realise how unlikely said thing was to happen, but that just makes the fact that it did happen even better.

so those endings were real?

People who look too much into the “science” behind science fiction should take a deep breath and heed the advice given in the MST3K theme song.

Late reply but you really think after hundreds of year the combine wouldn’t have thought to perhaps explore the rest of the planet? That and the fact they’re not just confined to russia (seven hour war took place everywhere, there’s even pictures in half life 2 of new york) and even if they weren’t at that particular place, xenians were teleported everywhere on the planet. Also the combine is draining the earth’s water in half life 2, at the end of portal 2 there is still water. I’m pretty damn sure that after hundreds of years of draining the water (considering how far it had gone in half life ater like 20 years (maybe less)) there wouldn’t be a lot of water.

Pretty damn sure the combine are more than likely gone

Wasnt reading piefish’s post properly. I agree, the combine are gone. Half-life would be rubbish if it ended with Gordon failing to save the planet.

I doubt it was New York. It was probably Bellevue, Washington. And to state the facts…yeah it is in Cleveland, a “wheat crop” in Cleveland, Ohio…not Montana whoever said that.

I should take a picture; I currently live in Bellevue, Washington.

Am I the only one that actually liked the ending?

I think it was owesome!

I don’t know where you got that impression, a lot of people in this thread stated that the ending was their favorite part.

Chell’s face model (Alesia Glidewell) is American, born in Hawaii. Where the hell do you get Asian from?

The fact that she looks asian.

Protip: American does not mean white. Thinking can save you from making posts like that.
