Overheating problems

So today my computer decided to shutdown due to overheating, and I don’t know why. Right after the incident, my CPU was at 96C, which I know is horrible. The thing is, I honestly don’t know why it is overheating now and hasn’t before (I changed thermal paste a couple of months ago after like three years of having this mobo). All of my fans seems to be working fine (GPU, CPU and Case) and right new it looks like this:

Anyone knows what would the problem be?

edit: Now that I have Paint.Net and Chrome open, my CPU temps is steady at about 62C

Still using speedfan? it’s not a viable tool to read temps on anything newer than a socket 478 computer, use coretemp or a tool provided for your motherboard. Anyway, you might simply need to re-apply thermal paste (in case you put too much/too little) and make sure that all the 4 brackets on the cooler are properly secured. Those tiny plastic pins that go through the board can bend on one side, I’ve seen it happen.

Use RealTemp to monitor CPU core temperatures. I believe Intel CPU’s automatically downclock when they reach a thermal threshold of about 91 C and probably shut down if that doesn’t lower temps.

If it was overheating, do what sersoft said.

Also, are you using stock cooling? I used to have a Q9450 and it never went past 65 C even under full load using prime95. I was using a custom cooler.

edit:

I also find it hard to believe a motherboard could operate at temperatures of 150 C lol, those readings must be inaccurate.

Here’s what Realtemp is showing me:

Also, I doubt thermal paste is the problem. I followed tuts about my specific socket (775) and did exactly as they shown. My CPU fan is also well secured, I just checked it. Also, I am using stock cooling. Should I get a better fan?

You should get third party cooling but those temps look fine to me. The maximums might be a little high but I don’t know what you were doing for it to reach those.

Well your temperatures aren’t good. A CPU core running at 85 C every time it has to do some work is unlikely to have a long lifespan.

Just shows how much stock cooling sucks. Get a custom cooler that has a copper heatsink. Some are shipped with their own thermal paste, though it wouldn’t hurt to look for some articles testing different varieties.

My custom cooler for the Q9450 idled around 35 C and maxed out at 65 C under a constant 100% load using prime95. During games it was around 58 C. Not to mention I overclocked. I used the paste that came with the cooler. Just make sure you get a cooler that was made specifically for your type of CPU or it won’t fit (duh).

I have a quad-core AMD Athlon II X4 630 and I’ve been running my CPUs at 100% load for a while (rendering a 3D animation) and it’s alternating between a minimum of 63C to a maximum of 70C, averaging around 64-65C, according to Core Temp. Now, I’m sorry to piggyback onto this thread, but is it okay for Core Temp to recognize my cores as 2799.99MHz instead of 2800MHz?

I’m using stock cooling for a i5 2500 and it idles at 40 and goes to about 70 at full load. Not too shabby for stock.

here’s an example of good temps:

as soon as I close the burn test, my temps are back at low 30’s :awesome:

Would this be a good replacement for my stock cooler?

is what I use.

Isn’t that a bit overkill for me since I don’t overclock? I just want something that will keep my CPU at reasonable temps, not a fan that I can also use as A/C for my house.

I use this one: https://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835185093
Does a pretty good job with a low noise level

EDIT: before its production got canceled I wanted to buy this one: https://www.computerbase.de/bildstrecke/20570/13/

It is.

NewEgg links are all the rage, so here’s mine. Like I’ve said before, cheap, yes, effective? very.

What’s a good AMD temperature gauge? I used speedfan last time, because it was the only thing that would read my cpu temperature(unlocked cores on my cpu screw up some programs).

Should do the job, you don’t need a 60+ bucks cooler if you’re not overclocking. If it keeps the load temperatures at ~65 then you should be fine.

That’s mine. Might be a little bit of overkill but the fan I was using before that wouldn’t hook onto my CPU right and wasn’t really doing anything at all.

+1 for the Hyper 212+ (linked by acade). It’s one of the most popular aftermarket coolers out there, and for good reason. Just make sure it’ll fit in your case before you buy it.

I’m going for this one. I mesured my case and from mobo to case panel I got about 17 centimeters, and the cooler is 158mm high, so that should fit.

By the way, I’m considering getting more RAM because I only got 3GBs and that sucks. 8GBs is what I’M aiming. But the things is, I’m on a DDR2 base. Anyone knows where I could find decently priced RAM?

Damn man 8Gb of DDR2 will be seriously expensive. So expensive I’d consider not upgrading ram until you do your motherboard too :frowning:
