Modern Warfare 2: Leaked Massacre Footage
Hm, not sure. Those “games as art” games, like The Path, fail at being games or art in my opinion. Silent Hill 2 is the closest I can to get to being art that I can think of at three in the morning.

I don’t agree. Just because it does not have a defined objective, does not involve killing people or collecting stars doesn’t mean it’s not a game. But I should probably shut up about this 'cause I don’t want to start another argument about what is Art and what isn’t.

Time for sum late responses

HA! You wish!

So yeah, Infinity Ward thinks that a realistic depiction of Modern Warfare involves astronauts and cosmonauts engaging in explosive, zero-gravity combat. Watch the new trailer.

Game Of The Fucking Year!

Blech, all Tale of Tales and Nifflas games are terrible, and this is coming from someone who is a strong proponent of video games as art.

I am pleased with this terrorism scene, because it’s (however slightly) experimenting with the established point of view mechanics- the atrocities you eventually have to avenge become more immediately affecting if you yourself are there to witness or even forced to perform them.

And y’all blubbing about how it crosses the line are plainly idiots.

As in everything looks like it could happen even if in reality it couldn’t.

What would you recommend then?

I’ve got nothing on the. It’s the best thing they’ve done recently.
I guess Kotick has SOME kind of soul.

So yeah, turns out that there is NO combat on that level, and will be similar to the President level from COD4.

Well that’s no fun.

I was hoping that the terrorist had a secret nuclear base on the moon, and that the player would be given a gun that uses lazer AMMO THAT SETS Terrorist Nazi ZOMBIES ON FIRE!!! and the final boss would be “Super Mega Death Christ Alla Xenu Hitler Jesus OMBFG 9000.”
Now it’s just another fucking war game. Great.

I believe the comment was more generally aimed at the German video game censorship. But no, gunning down civilians is not mildly violent. In fact, its very confronting and hard hitting, which is the point.

Well, you probably can’t really prevent it without breaking the game. Which is pretty much how it is in real life; a lot of the soldiers in Vietnam wanted to speak out against the atrocities committed there but felt powerless to prevent them.

The reason they allow you to skip it is hardly a “bad joke”; its the same reason they allow you to skip past scenes on a DVD. Perhaps we should introduce a “skipping ban” on DVD’s now? Stop people from going to the bathroom at the movies? Go all Clockwork Orange on TV watchers?

The whole point of the scene is to morally challenge you; rather than a Doom or Halo scenario where you’re just killing aliens, here you’re killing real people, and it forces you to consider if killing is appropriate.

So your argument isn’t that MW2 isn’t too realistic; its that its not realistic enough? Or if it isn’t 100% realistic, it shouldn’t bother? If we’re on the realism point, we should probably wait a good 50 years until virtual reality gets to the stage where you can actually realistically experience the game environment, change the game engine so you die in one shot and make missions three weeks REAL TIME apart. Wouldn’t that be a game (oh wait, it already exists - ARMA anyone?)?

You’re joking, right? Most countries don’t even allow women to fight on the frontline, so it would be equally unrealistic to put women in there for the sake of reverse sexism.

I personally think the representation of women was great. They didn’t have to put women in the game, and 99% of games of this ilk don’t. Plus, the character was fairly badass in and of herself.

I think it was the greatest display of mateship and comradery ever; these guys have just been told that there is a fucking nuke that’s about to go off, and they still go back and rescue one of their friends, and not because she’s a woman, but because she’s a fellow soldier, and that’s what soldiers do for each other. So call it sexist, chauvenistic or whatever, but I call that as real as it gets.

I think the whole concept of games has been misconstrued here; the point of games is no different from the point of books, movies or other forms of art. Yahtzee once said something very true: “The purpose of art, if art can ever be said to have any discernible purpose, is the exploration of human emotion”. That emotion can be joy, fear, love, hate, or down right disgust. Its the same reason not every TV show makes you laugh; because some TV shows are down-to-earth, hard hitting and morally challenging. That’s why I don’t laugh at everything I watch; because “entertainment” doesn’t mean “laughing your socks off”.

I still don’t get your arguments; on the one hand, its totally unacceptable, but on the other hand, its not real enough. That’s like arguing that Manhunt doesn’t let you use enough household objects to kill people.

The aspect of games that set it aside from every other genre is the interactivity of the experience; movies, TV shows, books, whatever, the story is always told to you, which means the effect will always be limited. However, when you take an active role in shaping the story, the effect is changed and accentuated. So, the scene in the airport lets you, for a brief moment, experience real war, and is a thousand times more hard hitting than any book, movie or TV show.

Exactly; as long as its not just killing for killings’ sake, then I think it should be in there. If its got a purpose, then leave it in, because Infinity Ward has shown that they can be exceptionally hard hitting when they want to be.

True.

Yep, I see a man getting beaten up at a train station and all I think is “COOL! Let’s stick around and see if he gets up”.

The point here isn’t to make games more violent because we’re becoming increasingly desensitized to violence, the point is to develop games as a storytelling medium. Previously, games of this kind had been limited to extremely muscled men killing extremely evil bad guys, in true Gears of War style. That’s been the formula ever since Wolfenstein 3D, Duke Nukem, Doom and Quake. The point is that IW are trying to create a new type of game, one that forces the player to think differently; in the same way that movies, books and TV shows can make you do so.

I’d like to know what 2 year olds watch Happy Tree Friends, but the point is that this generation is no different from the last. People are constantly convinced that the current generation is infinitely worse than the last, but the reality is that we’re exactly the same. In the same way that Elvis didn’t corrupt the Baby Boomers, and Generation X grew out of the 60’s, we wont be permanently scarred by video games.

Its the same argument for Mass Effect; its not like you started the game and just had sex constantly all the way through. Its part of the story. To remove it would be like taking out a chapter of Harry Potter because Snape died.

The point is that its part of the story; its a moral decision that makes you guilty as hell for being an insensitive bastard.

The PoP games were very artistic, the depiction of the characters, character interaction, storyline, combat and everything put together created one of the best gaming trilogies ever.

Braid was another good example, but the distinction really comes when the game stops being obsessed with just killing a collection of polygons and becomes about storytelling in another medium. I believe it was Niel Gaiman who said that “comics are just another medium; the story shouldn’t be defined by the medium, the medium should just be used to tell the story”.

Lol, now they know how awful airports are.

Anyway. Quite beautiful, in a terrorist-realism sort of way. It’d definitely get somebody’s fucking attention, that’s for sure. Still, a terrible scene that wouldn’t surprise me much if we saw it become a reality.

Hell, that’s reality. At least, it might be.

still don’t like IW.

tl;dr version: If gaming is truly and art form, then let the artist paint their vision.

My thoughts:
MW2’s singlepalyer is the most compelling aspect of the game to me. I mean, when I think of modern Washington DC, I think of a peaceful setting with gardens, large lakes, important buildings, and a large penis in memorial of a man with the penis large enough to take on Great Britian. Not the setting for a battleground, with destroyed houses, trenches in front of the White House, the penis set on fire. It’s really shocking, depressing, and brilliant.
Infinity Ward just might be onto something with MW2. And to think I was going to write this game off as “just another overhyped shooter.”
I will be renting it tomorrow. Dedicated servers, homophobia, it doesn’t matter. This could be the game to change gaming forever.

Multiplayer will still blow though.
I heard there’s a perk that can NUKE THE ENTIRE FUCKING MAP!
Who the fuck designs the multiplayer for this game?! Treyarch?!

I used to babysit him, his sister, and brother.

His brother pushed his mom down a flight of stairs a month ago. I’d just like to point that out.

And I’m not trying to say that the new generation is worse, what I’m trying to say is that some people would actually get joy and pleasure from that scene where you kill innocent civilians.

That is true, but I’m not enough of a pretentious hipster faggot to enjoy Tale of Tale games. Jesus Christ those are terrible, artsy-fuck wastes of pixels.

I’m sorry that my post was a little…comprehensive, but exam study means my forum surfing periods were virtually non-existent.

If some people derive pleasure from killing civilians, then not having this scene in video games isn’t going to exacerbate that problem at all, is it? It’ll probably even help him, since he can vent his borderline sociopathic tendencies in a safe virtual environment without pushing his mother down the stairs (unless he plays that new game: Push Your Mother Down the Stairs 4 - Return of the Hand Rail).

So for the extreme minority that might take some sadistic pleasure in killing people in video games, not having them isn’t going to make it worse at all. For the other 99.9999999999999% of the population, it does as I previously outlined.

That’s how I measure the world.

Well, todays the day!
Let’s hope Blockbuster has it.

Yup I’m getting it too but it might take while because there aren’t much people seeding right now.

Oh God, here come the flamers.
