He doesn’t say it clearly, but he does say, that they aren’t going to continue the episodic model. So we can expect, that Episode 3 won’t be released and that Valve will develop a Half Life 3. Well, I hope so.
Yeah, but what does that mean if they move straight to Half Life 3? What does that do for the story? Is it for better or for worse? Quite frankly, I think they’re ‘moving beyond’ that because they’re taking/took for goddamn ever releasing Episode 3. I mean seriously, that game could’ve been released a loongass time ago. But it was subject to Valve time and therefore, subject to being shelved for…years.
But what does that mean for the story? If they move straight to Half Life 3, does that mean we’ll be missing out on stuff we could’ve had in Episode 3? Is Half Life 3 just Episode 3 named differently, what is it?!
Does the title “Episode 3” necessarily mean it will be short, they could make it “Half-Life 2: Episode 3” and make it a full length game just to keep it so we are all sure it’s still a continuation of the HL2 story.
This is exactly what happened to me and Portal 2 Co-op…
She thought I’d gone crazy giggling away at killing my partner…
Back on topic: I figured this would happen after the long-ass wait, as I’m sure most people did. Either way, just give me yet another brilliant game to play than doesn’t take only 2-3 hours to complete and I’ll be happy.
I don’t think “being done with episodic content” necessarily means that Episode 3 will never come out or that Half-Life 3 will begin directly after the events of Episode 2. It’s just that they won’t be making any future episodic games. They need to finish the story of Rebels vs Combine first.
I honestly don’t know why so many people think that the idea of there being a Half-Life 3 instead of an Episode 3 automatically means that there won’t be any plot continuity. All it would mean is that it would be a full-length game, it will still have the plot we were expecting to be found in episode 3.
I’ve never said that plot continuity wouldn’t continue in Half-Life 3 instead of Episode 3 (where HL3 begins where Ep2 ends).
It’s just the concept of the overarching plot, as in “acts” in a play or movie. Generally, a play or a movie has three acts. The first act establishes the main characters and their relationships, and then features the “turning point” where the world changes (Half-Life 1?). The second act is the action part of the story where the protagonist(s) attempt to resolve the problem/find themselves in worsening situations (Half-Life 2?). The third act features the climax and brings resolutions to the story and subplots, and the denouement and epilogue (Half-Life 3?).
Half-Life 2 and its episode have the same basic subplot: Rebels vs Combine. If the Episodes brought in entirely new material, then this could be the third act but it didn’t. It just expanded on the Combine and, while there were climaxes in these episodes (Ep1 with the single strider, Ep2 with the multiple striders), these can’t really be considered the climax of the Gordon Freeman story.
Half-Life 1 was about Gordon Freeman causing the resonance cascade and turning the world to shit. Half-Life 2 is about the Combine taking over Earth and what happens as a result of that. The Combine should be brought to a conclusion before Half-Life 3 comes out and we find the “Big Bad” and battle him/her/it. Is it the G-man? Is it his employers? Is it Breen? :retard:
I think Episode 3 should feature the final all-out-war against the Combine where they’re either defeated or the humans are, and we turn our attention to the Big Bad for Half-Life 3.
I don’t quite understand that while you’ve said you understand the concept of HL3 starting where Episode 2 ended you go on to say that you want the combine defeated in episode 3 and attention to be brought to " the big bad" for HL3. Might you clarify?
