I'm confused by all the complaining.

He’s probably a fan of Duke Nukem.

I don’t think any of us really have been waiting, just lurking around. It’s not really logical to wait for a video game.

I’m waiting.

Actually, the team originally got together in 2004 before Half-Life 2 was released.

Also you seem to be missing the point of my post! I wasn’t complaining or making any demands at all, I was stating that I have no problem waiting

YEAH. I know, God forbid :expressionless:

That’s very true, but it was still very exciting to see the early talks of it. And all of the ancient media as well. It counts because it truly lit the fire and reeled people in. Plus, looking at it from the point of view of the eager fanbase, every little bit counts :stuck_out_tongue:

No, I was agreeing with you.

In what sense is “waiting” logical then to you?

o.o and this thread is still going, it’s like the energizer bunny hopped up on duracell batteries and speed.

anyways, I’ve been “waiting” since '08, that’s when I first heard about the mod, and thought that it sounded awesome. I completely missed the whole '09 “release” drama though. I didn’t check back on things till '10 that’s when I found out that I had, like the developers themselves, missed the “release date” didn’t bother me then, the fact that’s it’s still not released doesn’t bother me now.

As long as the promise that it will be released eventually is kept up by our devs, I’ll remain loyal and waiting.

Stides, I’m not going to flame you, however I am going to suggest you go back and actually read everything that’s been said in this thread.

I’m in no mood right now to repeat it all, but to sum it all up, this isn’t a simple “remake” no, not 3/4 of all the enemies models were allready made. about the only things that could be transferred over are tentacles and headcrabs, many other things had to be remade. there were no scientists or security guards in HL2, likewise there were no zombies of those types in HL2. There were no military soldiers in hl2, those had to be made as well. most of the alien races were not present in HL2 so those had to be made as well.

Weapons… many weapons from HL1 were not present in HL2, so those had to be remade.

levels… you have a valid point, if assuming they were just copying each level. The fact is that they are not copying each level, they are reimagining the levels. on top of that, many textures and meshes for things in Black Mesa had to be made from scratch, like many of the weapons and enemies.

point is, for the most part they are not just “making a simple mod” they are building a game from the ground up, basically. they aren’t really a team of “pros” doing it, although their skills have gotten good enough to be considered professional. they’ve got a team of about 30 people to do what takes valve a team of nearly 200 people to do, make a commercial-grade game.

for more information, please read previous posts, but please read previous posts if you intent to post further arguements on the matter. it’s no fun to debate these issues endlessly with people who don’t even try to arm themselves with knowledge of previous comments.

Does being aware of the mod since the HL : S times count as waiting 7 years for it?

Like the saying goes, the watched pot never boils.

I have been waiting for the mod since mid 2009, and i can wait a lot longer. Although that i have a feeling that it will get released this year. But well… Many people have had that feeling before…

Me too! I’m hoping it’ll be released this year, but meh; I can wait. Especially given Portal 2 is just around the corner…

I’m hoping it gets released this year as well, all the signs point to a release sometime this year, but at the same time, I’m not going to get my hopes up by setting my thinking in stone on the matter.

I can’t say I don’t care when the mod comes out because I do. I can’t say if it doesn’t come out this year I give up, because the devs keep going “we’re working”, and all clues dictate that they ARE.

I think the problem here is the huge detachment from the mod itself and the fans. We get to talk to the devs all the time, but we don’t see shit from the actual product we’re here for. I’m not saying they should release media, because I myself have been on a project where a bunch of rabid fans want nothing but screenshots (though it was nowhere near BM: S’s caliber). I know how fucking annoying it is. I know how it feels to just want to work and get out a product while the people you make it for damn your name because of neglect. The thing is to try and maintain the connection between the fans and the product, not the fans and the product’s creators.

(addressing the devs now)

The main problem is that subconsciously the complainers don’t feel you take them or your own project seriously. At least this is the vibe I’ve been getting. The time dedicated to it is certainly proof that it’s important to you, but the nonchalant way inquiries or any mention of the project is brushed off by the devs is concerning. When you ignore or satirize the fan’s demand for the mod, it looks like you’re doing the same thing to the mod. The done-to-death “when it’s done” response makes it sound like you have no faith in your own power to complete the project. That’s probably where all the fanrage is coming from. Simply a matter of the higher-up’s “internet posture”.

Act more confident in your mod, guys. Even if it is a chore to work on at this point, and you dread every bit of it, don’t let them think you dread it.

I wait about 3 year, since 2009. Before the forum broken down. Still waiting, still waiting, I guess I can wait even more!

I don’t even consider this a mod anymore after realizing that they are re-creating an entire game by taking the original game and adding even more detail and originality into it. Not only is the game being made from scratch from beginning to end by those who are involved. But they are also going the extra mile to make the game more modern and detailed. And that would be where the dev’s originality is put into the game.

And anyone who knows what it is like to create whether it be mods, music, dancing, theater etc “The Arts” know that coming up with original ideas is no easy task. To perfect those ideas is the goal.

Imagine if a band decided to cover a song by the Beatles and learned the song but didn’t polish it up. And during their performance they kept fucking up. Do you really think the die hard Beatles fans are going to accept it? NO! They would be pissed and would think “What a fucking disgrace.” and that band would never be trusted to participate in any type of re-creation of any song. Because they fucking half assed it. Reputation GONE.

So, for those who bitch and moan, you really have no right to be disappointed. (even if the mod is a disappointment) While those who wait patiently will be rewarded greatly with a great rendition of a ground breaking FPS from the late 90’s with new originality and grander. (and I guess the assholes (including myself) still get to enjoy a great game as well, but really should feel guilty while playing… I know I will.)

I could not complain about the mod not being released even if I wanted to. It would just make me into a bigger hypocrite. Since I am still waiting for the Max Payne mod: “The Real World” and the HL2 mod: “The Hunger: Lost Souls.” Not one of them has been updated with any real news since a few years now. Knowing the impracticality of saying a mod (free user content) should be released within any time frame is pure idiocy.

Furthermore after witnessing what happened to both L4D1/L4D2 mods Dead before Dawn and I Hate Mountains; I can’t help to be empathetic for anyone who builds upon the source engine. It’s kind of a good thing the BM team did not transfer their build over from the orange box engine to any of the L4D versions. However that does not mean the team still does not hit that superficial brick wall with engine itself. Working on someone else’s engine with a handful of people (let alone one) is like having a door slightly ajar to a pastry recipe that’s just out of reach. You can never have all the answers (there are always limitations), and using shortcuts will make your work look half-baked.

So when BM is done then it’s done.

You’ve nailed it. That’s probably the reason why, aside from the youtube-style-haters (who would always hate no matter what), more people and even forum regulars got annoyed the past year. Not because of the waiting, but because of the dev’s “posture”.

Then it was I who misunderstood, apologies. I thought you took my “I’ve been waiting for 7 years” as a complaint. Again, apologies! :stuck_out_tongue:

I’m all but certain it will be released by 2012 for sure. I’m thinking summer is likely, but we’ll see. One things that I’ve gathered from the devs is that development on Black Mesa is near or in its final stages. I could be wrong, but I’d like to be right haha

I’ll try not to feel guilty for wasting all those hundreds of hours reading and making posts here. (I mean while I was waiting, some people were actually working on it)

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
