I'm confused by all the complaining.

Okay, first off just hear me out before you let the flame war begin! What I am confused by is the fact that everyone thinks it is so incredibly ridiculous that it had taken 6 years, thus far, to make this game.

So lets break down how long a normal "triple A blockbuster" title with a full staff or animators, voice actors, story board artist, programmers, character artist, map artist, texture artist, managers, pr staff, advertisers, and last but not least SALARIES, take to make a game. It is not unheard of for these professional outfits to take 3-4 years to release a game!

The Black Mesa team are a small group of people that are doing everything from advertising, web design, keeping the forum updated, PR, game and level design, animation, music, voice work, and beta testing, etc. all by themselves without even the luxury of living close to one another or even having the comfort of monetary compensation.

The FINE people whom are creating Black Mesa aren't just making a quick "Half Life: Source" like port, they are completely remaking every last inch of Half Life from the ground up, in their spare time, WITHOUT getting paid for it. If anything it is costing them money to make it with all the lost time that they could have spent developing for money.

With all that being said I think a job this big with a team this small that only works on their spare time, 6... 7 years even, is really not that crazy of a time span with all things considered.

Exactly. This thread should be shown to anyone complaining about how long Black Mesa takes to release.

I agree completely and it is nice to see someone has the right idea.

Honestly, most of the complaining lately is because of the lack of twitter updates about the mod and not about how long it’s taking for it to be made. A lot of BM fans don’t visit the forums and their only source of info about BM has been from sources external to the forums.

Ive done most of my posting in the Raminator’s Ladies Club so I guess they don’t count.‘https://forums.blackmesasource.com/forumdisplay.php?f=8’

Exactly. We show them this thread, they’ll say “but no work has been done in over a year, look at twitter!”. We show them the wiki and the constant flow of screenshots and stuff there that proves work has been done, they go “so then the mod is almost done!!” and complain a week later when it isn’t. Vicious cycle.

I’m not complaining about the time it took, I was just let down by the loss of coop and not having MP5 model in the game files and those sorts of things

The MP5 model is still there

they got rid of the M4

So basically people are to lazy to take the time to find out whats really going on so they just complain in response to no twitter feeds? If that really is the reason so many people complain than maybe they should just get a rid of their Black Mesa Twitter account and it’s link on the home page.

One can always check the gallery of new files in the wiki.

They should get rid of the Twitter account and everything associated with it on the home page. I talked to a guy who thought BM was dead just because Twitter hasn’t been updated in over a year. Why not make a tweet that says something among the lines of “We are still alive. Check the wiki and the forums for more updates.” ? it’s better to do that than to make lazy people uninterested in the mod.

jerry: The way I look at it, the mods have been working on this thing for years…the least someone interested in the mod can do is take a couple spare minutes out of their day to RESEARCH.

The way I feel, all these folks complaining about the fact that they don’t get all the information directly spoonfed into their brains, they won’t say a word to the devs or anyone else when the mod is released and they’ve had a chance to play through it. Complete silence.

So, I’m not going to hold their hand or be nice to people that can’t even take an inkling of effort to get the answer.

But IMO, they should tell people on Twitter to do some research so they see that BM is not actually dead. They don’t get the information, just info on how to get the info.

True. Maybe a Twitter update is a bad idea. But i still honestly think that the Twitter feed on the home page should be removed. It shouldn’t that long to do.

And then, if the Twitter feed is removed, then the reaction will be “zOMFG, mod iz ded gaiz i new it!!!1”

Put a link to https://isblackmesareleased.com/ there instead

Then people will complain that there is no status/completion bar in the website

then just ignore them

I think i’ll make a thread which tells these people that it takes alot of hard work to create a website, and give examples of the timespan for professionally developed “AAA” websites before explaining that this website was made by a small team of web developers IN THEIR SPARE TIME, and therefore that we should understand that it will of course take a long time to add every last detail to the page, but finally that given that this is all being done for free, the least people visiting the website could do is RESEARCH what button to press to bring the progress bar up.

Which brings us back to where we started in the first place.

Also, OP, I like you. You’re not an idiot that comes on here and bitches about the mod not being done.

Also, russilker, we actually have referred people who complain about no updates to the wiki, and the general response was “I don’t have time to be searching through the wiki every time I come onto the site.” It’s ridiculous that if you’re interested in something that you can’t spare another 2-3 minutes to look at something just because it takes slightly longer to get to it.

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
