They are both good in their own ways. I know if I could only ever have one of them installed, it would be half life 2.
i voted hl2 to make it 50/50 again
Doom 3 is not scary ffs.
The first time I played a half life game was Decay on the ps2. Then HL: S and HL2 + episodes. Then got the Original HL and expansions.
All equally good games just a different gameplay experience.
Well, since HL1 was the first game ever played bu me, it’ll be true to say that I like it more than a second one. Although, I like them both near equally.
I like original HL atmosphere and maybe the story better, but if you add HL2’s graphical advantage, characterization and personality, and its variety of new gameplay, (not to mention the episodes), HL2 is the superior game.
I prefered Hl1 over HL2, but I think thats because I liked seeing how the situation escalated out of control. You have the incident, then the HECU come in to establish some kind of order and control out of chaos. Then you realise this situation is beyond them, and saw their disorganised retreat. You saw the events unfold in real-time, which is why I thought the slow-teleport in HL2 was a cop-out, as I saw the outcome of what happened in Nova Propekt, but I didn’t see it escalate from that very point in time, i.e. was there other events that solidified the rebellions presence (something that I would of loved to see)?
Other reasons was because this facility provided a lot of imagination for the player, due to it being a high tech facility and having many open-projects as well as classified projects. You were also situated in the desert that also helped the illusion that whatever happens, you are effectively on your own (the guards and scientists were practically useless).
Guy above me hit the nail on the head. Those are all my reasons, exactly. I like HL² alot, mainly for the plot and how well Valve was able to get everything to fit together, along with the Source engine, but If absolutely had to choose between the two, Half-Life 1 is the winner.
I totally agree. I love Half-Life and I don’t play it often, but when I do, i enjoy the ride. HL2, on the other hand, I enjoyed, and the story is better, but I get bored of it way more easily. So I’m saying HL1. Besides, I hate the HL2 weapons minus the crossbow and Grav gun.
I was never around for when hl1 actually came out so I wouldn’t know, but after playing both it seemed like hl2 had a little more depth.
Half-Life 1 for me. Don’t get me wrong, HL2 is great and I love the characters, but HL1 still has a special place in my heart. The feeling of aloneness, the expansiveness of the facility, and the general “WTF is going on?” feeling. Even now, I love how slow the game starts and then the shit hits the fan.
HL2 feels too…I dunno…different from HL1. You’re suddenly in the streets with very little in the way of alien combat (I don’t count the Combine and Civil Protection to be “alien” because, to me, they’re just humans in armored suits similar to the HECU). Where are my bullsquids? Where are my alien controllers? Ichtyosaurs? Headcrabs are there but only feels like a side element…
HL1, baby.
Yeah, Half-Life 2’s story was much more in-depth, but the general gameplay and environment just doesn’t compare to the first.
i cant really decide hl1 was indeed very very good but the graphics were bad there was an unrealistic number of weapons and black mesa wasnt very good made you should think it would be even bigger than it is and xen was a bit ugly
hl2 was in the story line awesome graphics good characters but too easy i kinda got bad because it there wasnt so much action like in hl1 so ill go 50/50
Why? Tell me, please. Enlighten me as to why it isn’t just a matter of opinion.
Vote hl2 to make it fifty fifty pls.
hl2 had at least the same number of weapons
HL1, it’s faster and still very much fun. I have no idea how they did it with that game but I have beat the game at least 30 times and it still is fun. I played HL2 4 times or so and am now fed up with it. I guess it’s pure nostalgia…
No, it didn’t.
HL2 has 12 weapons(11 if you don’t include bug bait), as HL1 had 14 or so.
This is not including the mountable machine guns you can find laying around, of course.
Or… ACTUAL horror games for that matter?
Personally I like HL1. Maybe it’s it’s stylized doesn’t-quite-take-itself-seriously-but-still-has-high-standards feel. Mostly the gunfights just feel better. Let’s not kid ourselves. Shooting is the most important part in a FIRST PERSON SHOOTER. It just feels weak in HL2. Probably because there’s an overall better weapon set than in HL2. Gibs too.
