Good mods let down by certain things

A while back I downloaded Portal :stuck_out_tongue: relude since people had been saying it was a good mod. I agreed that the level design and story was pretty good, but the one problem I had with this mod was the fact that they didn’t even bother to put in voice-acting, they just used text-to-speech like Microsoft Sam. It just would have been so much better if they’d used real people instead of some crappy program.

So anyone else feel the same about this mod or have any other mods where it was let down by one thing?

‘Eternal Silence’ for HL2: The only thing that let it down for me was its lack of local (Australian) servers, or ever players for that matter… It was a shame because I really enjoyed that mod. (Being a Re-Imagined Battlestar Galactica fan I don’t see how I couldn’t have enjoyed it :stuck_out_tongue: )

I’ve thought of some more as well lol

Portal :stuck_out_tongue: relude (again) - Now that I think about it, this game really wasn’t that great. I said it had great level design but actually it wasn’t that spectacular, more confusing. All the charm of the original has been taken out and I think that the whole game should just be scrapped and considered a failure and they should do it again but this time with people who actually know how to make a mod.

Ravenholm - Similar to Portal :stuck_out_tongue: relude, voice acting. I’d heard good reviews about it and so I decided to see if it was worth them. Took a while to download and then when I did start it up, it wasn’t even in English! And no english subtitles don’t count! Once again, if the dev team had just employed someone who could speak english, then it would be fine. These guys had the idea of voice acting, they just forgot to do it in english:fffuuu:

Zombie Panic:Source - Not much to complain about here. I never played the original but from what I can see here it’s a well made mod. Looks good and the individual characters are a nice touch. Only problem is the gameplay. The fact that one zombie can kill you in essentially 4 hits if you don’t have armour on seems somewhat stupid. The other side of the argument is that all it takes is for the humans to hord all the ammo in a room and they pretty much win with no way for the zombies to get at them. Disappointing in that respect.

Synergy - This mod admittedly is a lot of fun when you get in a server, especially when playing HL2 campaign with 8 or so people. The problem comes when trying to find servers. There are very little to choose from and they all have high pings, so unless you can put up with that you won’t enjoy it as much.

I’m going to download Radiator, seeing as thats got a lot of praise recently. Hopefully that won’t have to go down on here as well.

Research & Development, the bug with Mr. Swirly. It pretty much ruined it for me, even after I found out how to fix it.

Battle Grounds 2. I don’t know why, it just felt too realistic, and a tad too slow.

The English voice acting in Get a Life. It was so bad I just switched to the French version with English subtitles.

awakening.
horrible voice acting in a perfect mod

Black Mesa: The forums are a living hell, inhabited by trolls and Keresh Klones.

That shouldn’t ruin the game for you

unless they invade the black mesa facility and start spamming and killing you before you even have the crowbar :FFFUUU:

Glad you corrected yourself… I was going to have to smack you.

I saw no bug. D:

I loved R&D, a great mod, just not very long. Other than that it is sex.

That’s a tad unfair, to be honest. I played the mod and had no problem with foreign dubbing. If anything, it feels a little bit more real as it was likely that translated dialogue would have sounded worse.

Well maybe it’s just me, but I don’t enjoy playing mods in different languages or bad voice acting, because it just comes over as though they didn’t put effort in where it mattered. I’m sure the mod is alright, but I just find listening to it a strain on the ears.

If it’s the same bug that I encountered…

When you’re tootling around in Mr. Whirly, if you exit the vehicle, it doesn’t power down. You end up on the ground being unable to move, but you are still able to move the vehicle. I ended up once getting killed by Mr. Whirly because I was trying to figure out what was going on and it came with its blade and chopchopchopREDSCREEN :fffuuu:

It was a bit hard to drive, too. Kept sliding around!

is research and development for HL2?

It’s for HL2:Ep2.

I really hate when I see an awesome mod and when I try to play it, there are no servers or they have huge ping and are full.

Mods that are too puzzle heavy really piss me off. I mean really… does this puzzle even make sense? The latest (I wont name it) I couldn’t even get out of the room I woke up in. I guess I am too noob for it, or it is too awesome for me.

MINERVA-…um… well, it would be nice if there was like a datalog for all the AI Bitch’s (that’s what I call her) messages. It’s annoying when I’m in a gun fight and suddenly I get a two paragraph long message that’s only up there for 5 seconds.

honestly it confuses me when people can’t read fast I played through Minerva even when I was in a gunfight I could use my peripherals and read that two paragraphs in 5 second easy. but I do agree with you a datalog would’ve have been nice sometimes I missed a few message because I was too outnumbered to try and read it.

on topic.
Decadance I was really wanted to try this mod but due to the fact that there was not a single server I couldn’t.
