Gabe Newell calls Windows 8 a 'catastrophe'

I foresee people switching to Linux once Win8 becomes standard on new PCs. I would.

I think the problem with Windows 8 is that everybody thinks it is the ‘new Windows OS’ (ie. replacing Windows 7). It isn’t. Windows 8 is designed for tablets and touch-screen laptops, NOT normal PCs. So I don’t see why anybody in their right mind would buy Windows 8 for a PC. Windows 7 will do everybody else for a couple of years yet before Microsoft release their next REAL operating system.

windows 8 is microsoft’s answer to the “post-pc” bullshit talk that apple and google have started

A pretty stupid answer I might add.

:fffuuu::fffuuu: It’s already being offered as an upgrade by many PC stores.
So obviously they didn’t get the memo that it’s not supposed to replace Win7.

I personally enjoy the look of the Metro UI, but not in the way they’re using it. I’d personally like a Metro theme for my desktop, but without changing the layout to the panel-looking thing they’ve got going on.

Yeah, if they replaced desktop icons with Metro UI tiles, that would be perfectly fine IMO. We would finally get an official alternative to Rainmeter and stuff. What they are doing instead is shoving the entire window manager into the “old crap” category. Which is not going to fly with most desktop users.

I’ll wait for release before I make any suppositions with regards to Windows 8. Maybe they’ll give you the option during install between the standard desktop and the Metro UI. I would like to know more, not about the Metro UI but what they’ve done with the standard desktop, if anything. If there isn’t much to add onto Windows 7 except for the Metro UI, why bother?

And how will this affect gaming? Every time I search for it, it’s all “OMGMETROWTFLOL!” without actually telling how installable programs, such as games, run.

Again, I’ll wait for the release before forming an opinion of 8 and whether it’s worth an upgrade. Windows 7 is working just fine for me, thankyouverymuch and if I don’t see anything much to improve upon, I’ll stay with 7 for the time being.

isnt it just like 7 only with unnecessary tablet shit?

gabe should worry more about some future half life game and less about what Microsoft is doing.

maybe he’s just jealous that Windows 8 is actually releasing on some sort of schedule.

what will that be, the 3rd windows release since HL2?

I don’t think that Valve care about releasing stuff on an schedule, but rather make things great before even thinking about releasing it… something Microsoft can learn of!

It really only helps them releasing it late, it makes the product better which makes people want it more. It also builds up hype. It’s not like they are going to go out of business with the next Half Life taking a long time.

Has anyone seen the BSOD for Windows 8? It’s just a frowny face that basically gives you a “Sorry something went wrong!” instead of some possibly useful information.

That’s a good point. I don’t know why Gabe is upset since HL3 wont be shipping within Windows 8’s lifetime. I think Windows 11 as a more suitable estimation for a HL3 release.

The OS equivalent of Final Cut X, it looks to be.

Remember when everybody switched to Linux when Vista was released?

Yeah, me neither.

The problem with switching to Linux is my Steam account. Sure, Source games will be able to run on it, but I have a shitload of games that aren’t Source that I’d still like to play. Sticking with Win7 for the time being.

I have mixed feelings about Linux (desktop distros, not server). There are some good things about them (free of charge, lots of freedom, lightweight), but I feel like it’s way too much work to try to use a Linux distro for most purposes.

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
