Thief launch trailer.
Holy shit did they drop the ball on this game. What a disaster.
This is what happens when you try to please everyone, kids. You please no one, especially your shareholders.
Link’s busted. Dropbox shuts down files under high amounts of traffic.
Was afraid of that. It went down before too and then it was back up and I guess it’s down again. It was uploaded to a few other places but I don’t remember where they were. Here’s a video.

Edit: Here’s another site that it’s uploaded to that should work
Reviews are in. Most places gave it a 6-7. One site gave it an 8 and a few sites ripped the game apart, one giving it a 3/10 and Sneaky Bastards (who tore the game apart in their preview) said that it was worse than they were even expecting. Metacritic scores for the game are 72 PC, 70 Xbone, and 69 PS4.
It’s been universally panned, save for a few specific cases (rps comes to mind, although their text sounds more like a parody than anything else). I’ll probably check it out a couples steam sales from now.

Although he’s not really played the original games much so he’s not exactly comparing them.
I’m seeing such mixed reception all over, and as a huge thief fan I’m tempted to completely write this game off especially considering how bad the plot is supposed to be (I prefer T1, 2 and even 3 to the dark mod because of the story and characters - if they suck in the new one, why not play one of the superb fan missions for TDM instead of buy this?), but I think I might actually pick this up when it goes on sale.
It seems like had it not been a “thief” title it would be considered more of an okay game.
It seems that Eidos Montréal magic doesn’t work for all PC classics. Most likely I’ll get this one when it’s a fiver.
Now I just hope they don’t fuck up the next Deus Ex.
The game plays nothing like the Thief games. It even plays differently to Dishonored and the levels are smaller and more linear somehow. Throughout the entire stream I watched which went through most of the game I only saw one objective to steal something and it was optional. It’s like Hitman Absolution which forgot that you were a hitman and the levels turned mostly into go from point a to point b, except Hitman Absolution actually had levels that feel like Hitman levels where Thiaf has completely forgotten that their game is called “Thief”.
so is it actually a bad game or is it just not enough like thief 1 and 2
It seems like a bad game in its own right as well as being completely different from any of the Thief games. It honestly feels unfinished from what I saw, which may actually be right if there’s a day one patch planned.
Are you sure you’re judging it on its own merit, though?
A lot of people hate Red Faction: Armageddon for going away from the open-world elements, but I’ve only played the original Red Faction (which was similarly linear - Guerrilla is the only title of four that was actually open-world) and I thought it was pretty good.
^Perhaps. It’s hard to rate a game on its own merit when it’s harping on the name of an older game when it plays nothing like the older game. I don’t think a game that does that should be rated on its own merit either, at least entirely. If the devs insist on taking the name of a game series and slapping it on their own game they should expect comparisons to the older games.
Playing it right now btw. It runs pretty well and looks fine. It has ssaa which is pretty cool. I’m going to be playing it as stealthily as I can. So I turned off focus and most of the hud and am not going to use that swoop thing as much as I can. Will try to avoid takedowns too (and I think one of the options I set disables aerial takedowns too for some reason).
If they let you kill in expert mode this game is dead to me
Mixed reviews for a game everyone wanted to hate in the first place = unanimously panned now, apparently.
So many people were expecting it to be so bad that they simply think it’s true. A lot of people, I would imagine, aren’t even bothering to check the reviews.
I’ve read reviews and watched Let’s Plays and I still think it’s pretty bad.
So it kinda has Deus Ex: Invisible War syndrome? Decent game but horrible sequel?
The game has a lot of issues and I’d say it deserves the scores it’s getting but it is possible to play it stealthily and considering there aren’t very many stealth games coming out these days it’s kind of fun. I can’t get over how poorly they did the sound though. I can’t count how many times I’ve heard a guard have the same sound clip played from his mouth twice at the same time. And I entirely turned off the music because it doesn’t fit the game.
It’s a really good looking game though and the cutscenes look cool at 60 fps.
I’d say it’s the same thing as what happened with Hitman Absolution but I think Absolution retained more of the feel of its original games than Thiaf does.
