Skip at 3:58 and listen closely at what Eli says. Have you noticed that?

“And not a moment too(cut breath)soon.”
Sound very G-man like.

Could Eli not be human? Could he be related in any way to G-man?

Eli is Gman :open_mouth:

doesn’t sound like Gman. gman takes longer breaks, it was probably just a bug.

It can’t be a bug. It happened both time I’ve finished the game. I looked through the game’s files and the break is also present in the audio file.
edit: Here’s the audio file.Valve wanted that line to be inside the game as it is.

After some though, maybe he is a robot.

Eli being non-human is just silly. Ridiculous unbelievable twists like that are for lesser storytellers than Valve. Gman pauses before saying father because that’s the way he talks, the telekinesis not affecting Eli is because the giant worm wanted to kill Eli, so it didn’t throw him like the rest. And the pause in his speech just happens to be that way because not every voice actor is perfect and sometimes people pause while speaking.

I don’t think if you’ve listened Portal’s Developer’s Commentary. If you did, I think you remember that each line Ellen McLain said was actually recorded 3 times. If the audio director thought that the tone was not right, she had to repeat that line again. And that was for Portal, a game 1/3rd of HL or even less.
Now, do you really think that Valve just put this audio file there, without making sure it’s perfect?

but gman does take longer breaks. it doesn’t sound gman-ic

lol, nice word you got there.
Perhaps he tried his hardest to speak correctly. Maybe he just let it slip there.

I’ve always taken those kinds of breaks as the fact that Eli is an older man and out of breath. It’s like he’s just struggling to say “soon” in the same breath as the rest of the sentence.

Also, my theory why the advisor didn’t pick up Eli is borne from the discussion of Mossman and the Borealis. When Eli says that he’s going after her, Kleiner and Alyx remind him that if he were to fall in the Combine’s hands, that it would be bad news for the resistance because he knows all about it. Perhaps the advisor didn’t want to risk killing him prematurely by slamming him against a wall before it could “extract” the information from him.

That’s my opinion, anyway.

i agree

ever noticed how the black people always get killed first and eli is the first main character to die

valve is so fukken racist

edit: perhaps eli is schizophrenic and gman is justa creation of his mind and so is gordan, amkes sense since gordans view goes black after eli died, perhaps thats why they haven’t made ep3 cuz gordan is dead

Yeah, why would an advisor kill Gman? Is that even possible? And I think the pauses in regular speech are put in there on purpose. For drama you know… would it sound the same if you just said : There is a fire : rather than : OH MY GOD! THERE IS A FIRE!!! : ?

Granted their was no fire, and it isn’t the same type of drama, but it proves a point; you can’t just SAY something, you want to make people believe in the character as more than a NPC, but a PERSON. It makes valve what valve is; a great story teller with its own time zone.

It was more than likely part of the script or an accident than Eli disguised as Gman. Plus, why would he tell Alyx to relay a message to himself?

God, I hope someone that hasn’t Ep2 doesn’t stumble across this thread, thinking they can help. It’ll ruin the fun for them for sure…

i don’t think that pause added any drama.

Ehh it is possible. It added a level of his character to his speech. Old people have not so great lungs. So therefore, it may or may not have added any sort of personality or drama to the character. depends on how “into” the game you are. The pause kind of shows off his fragility a little.

Alyx would’ve been able to say that entire thing in one breath, but Eli had to pause to breathe before continuing with what he had to say.

of course he could have catched his breath, but it didn’t add any drama

Whatever. It added it for me… :frowning:

it was just too short to add drama

MAJOR SPOILERS

Look, guys. I got the inside scoop from one of the Valve writers at a bar last night. Eli is actually a gman android created by the rebels in the future. This android was sent back in time to protect Gordon, but was singed over its whole body in the process, ergot the black skin and almost total lack of hair. He was then captured by the combine, and partially Stalker-ized (hence the one metal leg), but he escaped in order to build a daughter. The first version didn’t turn out quite right. Didn’t look very convincingly human. He renamed it Dog, and set about creating Alyx 2.0. To make sure that this one would be completely foolproof, he just murdered a rebel woman named Morgan Seeman, and implanted her brain with a mechanism to animate it, wipe her memeory, and preserve her organs. That’s why everything looks normal when the Vortigaunts mindscan her. I’ve got a lot more information about this if anyone’s interested. They were going to reveal it slowly over the course of the next three Half-Lafe games.

These theories are bad & you should feel bad.

^smart guy is smart

Everone shutup. (By everyone, I mainly mean Gothicfighter)
Eli is a fucking human, and you guys are over examining the entire thing.

What you guys really forget, is that it’s a game. It’s in no way, real, or anything like that. Some parts just aren’t perfect, and you just have to live with it.

The pause is probably nothing, but I do think there’s something to him not being affected by the telekinesis. If the Advisor didn’t want to risk killing him by slamming him against the wall it could have just picked him up gently. I don’t think they’d risk leaving him free if they could avoid it. And two Advisors should easily be able to handle three people considering a disorientated newly hatched one managed to hold Gordon, Alyx, a dead guy and a barrel at the same time.

I wouldn’t say this means he’s not human, though. He probably just learned it from the Vorts, or something. Maybe this relates to how we’ll fight them in Episode 3.
