Doom fans

I prefer marathon over doom, for gameplay wise.
Engine is reall good in comparison. Then again, it was released around when doom2 was released, so they had an extra year to cook the engine.
Gameplay has the killing monsters from doom, run into rooms full of them and clear them out style, but it has ammo conservation like half-life and a story-telling structure like…marathon. Besides the HL2 mod Minerva (Inspired by marathon), no other game has a story telling structure like it.
Actually, I probably like it as it plays like half life, if the half-life doom mod were to be remade, the marathon engine would fit it perfectly, wall health/armour chargers come with the engine, it can also cope with the room on top of room that Doom lacked (But not floor over floor).

Also, back when I was 6 it felt so liberating to look upwards in marathon, where doom was lacking that. Quake was the best for that also, but due to quake actually being 3D it is a different comparison to make.

I do play Doom1 a lot though, on Wii. My girlfriend loves it still.
I got this Doom3 mod which remade the first episode of Doom1, it was no Black Mesa, but it was alright. It was scarier than Doom1 due to the new enemy AI, and only because of the new AI.

Doom2 I really can’t get into, it just seems too rectangular and blocky compared to doom1, like, everything in Doom2 had a purpose to the levels, in Doom1 there were more side-rooms and explorable bonuses, Doom2’s secrets weren’t as fun to find.

I just want to randomly say.

Doom’s gameplay blow most other shooter out of the water.

Its funny that people talk of it as if it doesn’t deserve to be compared to anything modern. Kidding me, right? The atmosphere, the style, the feel, the sounds and the gameplay, and even the look (yes, the look, doesn’t need to be crysis graphic level to look good) is superior to so many.

The gameplay is basic though, of course, but it does it amazingly well, and most shooters these days sucks immensely and offer no fun from replaying it again, or heck, most don’t even coop. I’m really sad to have to bash Half-Life slightly for that.

With modern port GZDoom, it also gets rid of so many limitations due to how old the game is, and it can damn well be compared now. And not a lot of FPS can compare to Doom, thats more the way I see it.

If you think CoD4, Crysis or Halo is one of the best shooter of all time, you are not entitled to an opinion.

I like halo 3, shooter of the year all years

So I heard you like trolling.

No duct tape on Mars. talk to id if you don’t beleive me.

As for the movie, it was laughably bad, but I love movies like that. Karl Urban was okay, considering the script mostly had all the marines display a single emotion: Grrrr.
I don’t for the life of me know why they changed the Big Bad from Hell to Science. The whole fun of the story is eldritch horrors in a Sci-fi setting.
I consider it a film you can just sit back, turn your brain off and enjoy.

As for the games, DOOM one and two are great, along with all other iterations. I have the first one on my SNES. As for DOOM 3, they didn’t take the series in a hugely different direction. DOOM was always meant to be scary, they just couldn’t pull it off. I have a feeling DOOM 3 is the DOOM id always wanted to make.

I disagree, because similar environments are in other 2D fps games of that era (I bring up Bungie’s marathon again), space craft, dark atmosphere, aliens jump out at you.
Mix that with doom1’s hellish character with pentagrams and you’re 3/4 of the way to doom3, you just need to add the story.

What is very interesting is playing the “Classic Doom” mod for doom3, they highlight the story much more, the environments (Besides general level layout) make more sense to the story, well, some areas are just insane thanks to doom 1 being set in the most impractical facility ever.

If it’s the controls that bother you, use ZDOOM. You can customize the controls and the graphics are much more cleaned up.

Oh, and whoever said the movie was good? It was TERRIBLE! The only thing worse was the Super Mario Bros. movie!

No no. I’M the Halo “fanboy” of the forums.

+1 truth for you.

My uncle uses Doom controls with all his FPS games (Including all the Half-Life games), due to the fact that he played Doom and Quake so much.
I wrote a letter of complaint.

Doesn’t make them any better games. Without punchcard computers my current computer would probably not exist but that doesn’t mean I want to use one.

This is why I don’t ever use that argument, I bring it up when someone complains about graphics of old games, but never when gameplay is complained about.

On the otherhand, false-3D graphics were inevitable, as was 3D graphics of Quake, there will always be the passing stage. Perhaps the argument “Yes but without X you wouldn’t have Y” is a silly one to make.

Halo1 is actually a decent game, it’s simple, has a good story and looks bloody awesome when I mod HDR and bloom into it, Halo2 and Halo3 ruined it for me with the complexity and made me go back to Marathon. Don’t be harsh on Halo (I do prefer HL1 over Halo though)

Do you think graphics are the only thing that evolves over time? Doom did not have any better gameplay than a 2d game. You could not move in three dimensions, you could just see three dimensions. In modern games you can jump, crouch, there is puzzle solving, bosses with more complexity than “shoot boss for five hours”, physics which are integrated into gameplay, vehicle sections, advanced AI, and a million other gameplay related things that Doom never came close to.

What does that have to do with anything?

The first two were added into ZDoom, DOOM has puzzle solving (ie collecting key cards and finding the right door, or a switch to open a door. Not exactly puzzles, but you get the point.) I don’t remember many truly great and memorable boss fights in recent games. Vehicle sections are not mandatory for a good game. DOOM isn’t the kind of game that needs advance AI, just enough tough baddies to make you break your keyboard in half when you get owned by them, followed by ultimate satisfaction when you do get passed them.

DOOM is a classic. Half-Life is an admittedly better game. Crysis is a “play it, forget it” game… IMO

Alright guys. This flame war is getting out of hand. Obviously Someonerandom is a troll, because he purposely posted anti-Doom sentiments in a “Doom FANS” topic. Once again, people,

Edit:

Also, please post your favorite Doom Source Port. Whether it be good ol’ Dosbox or GzDoom, all source ports are welcome. I personally prefer ZDoom, as it was my first source port. I haven’t tried Boom but some people claim it’s pretty good…

Once again,
:applause:[/SIZE]

I started by trolling, but then I got depressed when you honestly believed that Doom is better than Crysis. Oh well.

Oh well.

I’m sure you did. Oh well, you also thing MGS4 has a reasonable amount of cutscenes, so there you go.

Doomsday (aka: JDoom). Great launcher, great options, great gameplay enhancements, and good support for IWads (For all versions of Doom, Hexen, and Heretic).

For me, which game I like better depends on what kind of game I feel like playing at the time. For instance, if I feel like running around a shooting things with no story, I’ll play Doom. If I feel like running around and shooting things with puzzles and a story, I’ll play Half-Life. If I want a story but no running around or shooting things, I’ll watch a movie or read a book or something. All these games are good in there own right and shouldn’t be compared with each other because they are so different. Judge them for what they are, not for whether one has more features to it or not.
