Deus Ex Human Revolution teaser trailer (it's awesome)

It will always be compared to the original, and there’s nothing you can do about it. Trying to “imagine that it’s not a perfect Deus Ex game” isn’t going to pass because you could pass that logic for anything. “Halo isn’t a perfect game, but since nothing is perfect, it’s obviously the best game out now lol.” is a shitty argument, which I’m aware you didn’t make, but that’s an example.

Also, the same people made all three Deus Ex games, the company’s name changed.

I am being a little harsh on a game that has yet to be released, but its not a question of the “perfect Deus Ex game”. From what I’ve seen, they haven’t taken out a few of the gameplay mechanics. They’ve dumbed it down into game that is a shell of the original.

All I hope is they haven’t done the same to the plot, but I fear they have.

Also, just to be a dick, I’m just going to say console players are all idiots and need to go back to their MW2 and other sucky games. [color=black]No, I don’t universally believe this, but I do blame people who like Halo and MW2 for this

I was intruiged by the trailer, in the sense that the NPC reactions are very well done and conversations seem just like the original. It would seem that the storytelling aspect has had some serious consideration.

But alas, it combat does seem a bit dumbed down but then again Deus Ex 1 combat was pretty dodgy. I am a bit annoyed that stealth has been turned into “sneak up on a guy and press a button” but at least gun battles will have some intensity.

One thing that’s going to piss me off is the canon. The cities look very Blade Runnerish, as if they’re from the 2300s, which is weird because the game is set before DX1. Why the hell was there a VTOL plane at the start, when in DX1 everyone is still using helicopters?

I think its clear they are distancing themselves from the original.

That’s not even close to the logic I was using. My argument wasn’t “Nothing is perfect so just pretend to enjoy terrible games”, my argument was “They’re not making Deus Ex 1”.

Didn’t know that. :open_mouth: Regardless, same company, different people.

I’m not saying that you guys can’t have your opinion, I’m just saying that nostalgia is making you guys go a little crazy on the criticizing here. Just enjoy the damn game when it comes out instead of nitpicking. It’ll make your life so much easier.

Its not nostalgia. I only played Deus Ex a year ago, and it has gameplay much deeper than any game in recent memory, and a story just as deep.

The simple fact of the matter is if you make a sequel, you make it similar to the first game, otherwise you can just make a separate franchise. And its not like they are following up on the story, since its a prequel.

Like FarCry2 has absolutely nothing to do with FC1?

And yet you guys are criticizing the game after only seeing 10 minutes of gameplay and 4 seconds of story exposition. The game could be valleys deeper than what a rehearsed stage demo showed you. And then you guys nitpick the stupidest things out of it anyway.

“Third person? What the fuck THIRD PERSON REWRFSDFSDF”
“Stealth takedowns without using my weapons WTF too easy” and then following with
“Mindlessly firing a GUN to kill enemies? omg so dumb deus ex 1 was better”

And then, the most worrysome of all:

“What the fuck everything looks all next gen-y. What the hell? Where’s my blocky, empty, grey, square buildings?”

Here, let me nitpick Deus Ex 1 for you guys.

-The first Deus Ex had the most retarded aiming system. I have to get on my knees and stay still for 3 seconds before I can shoot accurately? God knows what happens when my target MOVES

-Stealth in Deus Ex consisted of crouching next to barrels and getting found when I adjust myself to look around the corner. Don’t bullshit me with the whole “throwing things around to distract guards” because there is almost never a situation where that comes in handy.

-Shooting enemies with a crossbow was the worst idea. You shoot them and they’d run around, pausing every second to take damage with a loud “oof” as blood squirted out. So much for stealth.

-Melee. What the fuck melee. A few hours into the game you get the Nanosword thing. The game gets exponentially easy after that. You can upgrade your melee skill to ADVANCED and then go on a rampage with that thing, killing anything with one or two hits. Mainly one.

-Deus Ex had mind-numbingly boring environments. I know the technology wasn’t as great back then so they couldn’t make super awesome maps, but Half-Life came out 2 years prior, and it had much MUCH more interesting level design.

-Hacking consisted of pushing a button and turning all the turrets against your enemies before the time limit ran out.

-Really, really terrible voice acting.

Deus Ex 1 was still a great great great game. Just because I can name a few flaws doesn’t mean that it’s a bad game. You’ve named all of what, 5 things you don’t like about Deus Ex 3 and now it is RUINED FOREVER OMG. I know I just went into a rampage defending a game that isn’t even out yet, and I know that I’ll probably look like an idiot once it turns out that the game was a flop, but jesus you guys won’t give it a rest. :stuck_out_tongue:

Yeah, you honestly cannot make a sequel; even a REMAKE; without acknowledging the many flaws. Heck, the goal of Black Mesa is admitting that even Half-Life has flaws for people to fix.

I’m of course still skeptical, and will try to save judgement until I’ve played a demo. However, I still think it’s possible for them to do this well. If it’s still EIDOS, they had to have learned things (maybe not RPG-FPS stuff, but at least stealth) from BatmanAA.

totally agree!! I only played deus ex for the story back in its day. Didn’t care much for the sneaking and the stealth, cause i thought it was done very badly. And how right you are about the voice acting.

Although, I don’t know what to make of this, but Eidos released a piece of info about the script thats scheduled to be done due july, and its around 200.000 lines long. Is that normal for an rpg (like fallout 3 or dragon age) or does it seem a bit short with all the different endings and talking to everyone and reading stuff ingame etc?

I thought it was pretty well done for it’s time, especially compared to the gunfights.

well yeah, maybe its me, cause i played deus ex for the first time right after i finished the first splinter cell… so maybe thats why i thought the stealth sucked a bit.

The way I see it, the new combat system of DX3 is actually a step-up from the original, because, let’s be honest, the combat system of the original was awful and awkward.

I mean, JC Denton is supposed to be an UNATCO agent and they throw him in the field barely able to aim a pistol?

C’mon…

Upgrade your pistol skills, n00bs. With pistols at Advanced you can hit anything even while running. RPG element.

The baton could take down anyone if set to advanced. RPG elements again. Stealth and nonleathal for the win.

Shooting enemies with the crossbow should be done from behind cover, where you can duck away and hide until they drop. Yes, the animations and NPC barks when hurt from the darts was poor. Improve these things instead of removing them. All of a sudden instead of everyone complaining that it was removed, they are cheering because it was improved.

Melee isn’t just the nanosword. It is the knives, the baton (sneaking, you don’t baton someone to the face), the regular sword, the crowbar… Flexible gameplay for the win. Instead of removing things that were fun if not perfect, they should be perfecting them so that the fans of the original game love it even more.

The environments were simplistic, but they were far from boring. There was tons of stuff to search out with lots of things to find.

People that want to like the sequels are always narrowing their focus on what they didn’t like about the first game, and dismissing everything that the real fans did like. I admit that there were problems with the first game, but instead of throwing out everything that the complainers didn’t like they should be improving those ideas. They are doing it backwards.

They should be pleasing the fans of the original games first, and gaining new fans second. Instead they are aiming right for the people that didn’t like the original game and shitting all over the people that did in the process, throwing us the occasional fan service that doesn’t really add up to anything substantial.

Fuck you and your dislike of the original game. The sequel shouldn’t be for you. It should be for the people that actually liked/loved it.

I’ve already said why I don’t like it. Its not that the game will be bad, but ultimately I want Deus Ex games to be more strategic, more intelligent. This doesn’t feel like that and as such doesn’t deserve to be a Deus Ex game, and should be a new franchise, which is easily doable.

Also, yes I was bored.

go play deus ex 1 in a shed and die… nobody would care!

everybody here is entitled to have their own opinion. so in my opinion you should go jerk yourself to death while playing deus ex.

Why do you want a sequel to a game you don’t like?

wait, there aren’t any pistol/rifle skills?

Except he’s right. He’s even admitted that there are problems and that it’s not a perfect game, however he (and I agree) that instead of removing the more complex parts that many people loved, they should’ve improved them. They should NOT be making a Deus Ex game that’s dumbed down for non-RPG fans. If they’re not fans of the genre, then they don’t have to fucking play it.

And I have the same question as GoatPig, why the hell do you want this sequel so badly when you had so many issues with the original?

No. The gunplay in this game is going to be standard FPS fare where you can use every weapon like a professional from the onset of the game.

I loved the story of the original, thats how i remember deus ex, not the tiny little gameplay things. I dont care about a game being complex, its mostly just time consuming anyway. I like to relax with a game, have a kick ass story and they put in some great cinematic things too… it’s gonna be perfect. I don’t want a game to be riddled with micromanagement things. The story is the most important part, next to the gameplay. And what most of you guys do here is what we call ‘antfucking’. It’s tiny little things that they thought could be different and everybody keeps on whining about it. They kept the storyline choices with multiple approaches to levels, they kept the stealth, you can even have useful conversations with EVERY npc in that game, you can adjust your upgrades to your body (RPG), you can adjust every weapon (RPG), you can unlock a whole lot more kick ass cinematic takedowns, and the story is, from what i’ve seen, gonna be great!! They really captured the Deus Ex universe and atmosphere in this. Everyone who loves cypberpunk should love this setting they created.

So not to convince you guys to like this game, but more to show you how much you guys whine about a 10 year old game that should be uber everything. Half life kicks deus ex’s balls in gameplay, storywise those too are pretty close. You should be glad that this is’nt an invisible war 2.

Oh, and i like the footage i’ve seen so far, but you deus ex purists (you know who you are) shouldn’t play this game if you don’t want to, nobody is holding a gun to your head…
