Best to worst of the Half-Life series

I wanted to start a little random debate/discussion on what you think are the best Half-Life games (gearbox expansions included) and worst and why you think that. Keep in mind this does not mean you need to think any of them are bad. If I had to order the games from best to worst my choice would be:
1.Half-Life
2.Half-Life 2
3.Half-Life: Opposing Force
4.Half-Life 2: Episode 2
5.Half-Life 2: Episode 1
6.Half-Life: Decay
7.Half-Life: Blue Shift
8.Half-Life: Uplink
9.Half-Life 2: Lost Coast
10.Half-Life 2: Deathmatch
11.Half-Life: Source
12.Half-Life Deathmatch: Source

I feel like my list would look pretty similar. Although for me, the top five places on that list would be continually fluctuating depending on my mood, with HL1, HL2, and the Episodes constantly trading places with each other. :stuck_out_tongue:

It’s a bit useless to include HL:Source, Uplink, Lost Coast and the multiplayer IMO, because they aren’t what Half Life is all about in the first place (a immersive, varied (story-driven) first person shooter) or are just polished versions / (tech-) demos and that doesn’t count as a full game to me.

Mine would prolly look like

Half-Life 2
Half-Life
Half-Life 2: Episode 2
Half-Life - Opposing Force
Half-Life 2: Episode 1
Half-Life - Decay
Half-Life - Blue Shift

I like the above logic. Though I’m curious, can I ask how HL is #1 but HL:S is #11? :expressionless:

Anyway, my ordering:
Half-Life
Half-Life 2: Episode Two
Half-Life 2
Half-Life: Decay
Half-Life: Opposing Force
Half-Life: Blue Shift
Half-Life 2: Episode One

Half-Life Source seemed like a really bad port to me. The only thing fancy that the game is worth paying for/playing is the physics, water, ragdolls, and lighting(hdr). They didn’t even make use of the physics as much as they could have. They could’ve added, changed or even fixed a lot of things in the source engine version, but they didn’t. My idea for this is because they wanted to get an example out there to show that GoldSrc content can be converted to Source or something along the lines of tech demo.

Anyhow:

Half-Life
Half-Life 2
Half-Life 2: Episode 2
Half-Life 2: Episode 1
Half-Life - Opposing Force : Half-Life - Blue Shift : Half-Life - Decay

Couldn’t really decide.
If I have to though:

Half-Life
Half-Life 2
Half-Life 2: Episode 2
Half-Life - Opposing Force
Half-Life 2: Episode 1
Half-Life - Blue Shift
Half-Life - Decay

  1. Half-Life
  2. Half-Life 2: Episode 2
  3. Opposing Force
  4. Uplink
  5. Half-Life 2
  6. Blue Shift
  7. Half-Life 2: Episode 1

My list is shorter because I haven’t played HLS, HLSDM, Decay, Lost Coast or HL2DM. I really don’t like EP1 and I’m not completely sure why. I suppose it’s the unappealing urban setting, or maybe the fact that it’s essentially a filler that provides very little to the story/series.

  • Half-Life 3
  • Half-Life 2: Episode 2
  • Half-Life
  • Half-Life 2
  • Half-Life: Opposing Force
  • Half-Life 2: Episode 1
  • Half-Life: Blue Shift

HL2:EP2
HL1
HL2:EP1
HL2
OF
BS

HL2
HL2EP1
HL2EP2
BS
HL1
OF

I’m rating HL: S as what I view it as. A remake (a very bad remake) Edit: Or even as a tech demo it’s still pretty bad

Hmmm

Half Life
Half Life 2
Black Mesa Source
Episode 2
Episode 1
Opposing Force
Blue Shift

I don’t like any of the other expansions really, and I find Half Life Deathmatch, Deathmatch Source, Half Life 2 Deathmatch, etc to be of their own category and not to be counted as part of my favorite games. Multiplayer games only last as long as servers stay full xD while single player games last forever until you personally get bored of it.

In terms of fun I’ve had with em however, the list is:

Half Life 2 Deathmatch
Half Life Source Deathmatch
Half Life/Opposing Force Deathmatch (as they’re basically the same thing with some different guns)

And if you count any games modded from the engine, I enjoy:

Day of Defeat (both)
Team Fortress 2 (I did for awhile)
And a realllyyyyy long list of mods that would take far too long to type out x)

I don’t really thing I’d be able to make a proper list. Each of the games has its own long list of strengths, and some weaknesses, and it’d be hard to make into a linear scale.

HL
HL2
Black Mesa*
HL2:Ep2
HL2:Ep1
Opposing Force
Blue Shift
Lost Coast

  • if we’re including this and I placed it third due to the lack of completion. Will probably move when the full game comes out.

Well, Op For and BS were both Gearbox developed, which automatically knocks them down a few pegs…

Sure I don’t care if Black Mesa is included haha

That’s exactly what it was, we already know that.

That’s a terrible way to judge anything.

I very much enjoyed Op4. In general though, I feel like the Gearbox expansions weren’t as masterfully executed as HL was, in terms of integrating the puzzles/encounters and such into the environment. Quite a few of the things that you had to do in those games seemed… forced.

Cough Cough the terrible boss fight at the end of Op4 Cough Cough

Barrel circuit.

Other than those issues, though, I think the expansions were almost as fun and interesting as the main game.
