Best looking game you've ever played?

Yeah. But because they’re COOLER.

Speaking of which… back on topic? lol.

Here’s something. Not pretty in any way, yet there’s something about it that makes whatever it’s trying to do very effective.

I’m tempted to say Heavy Rain but that’s realistic, even if it is extremely stylish.

I’ll go with Shadow of the Colossus like others here. I haven’t actually beaten that game, I might have to go buy it.

The caves in Crysis are not as cool as the caves in Dear Esther. I hope that was what you meant by that.

Now while I’m talking about source, the Lost Coast monastery was rather nice.

Yes, it was. I wish more actual maps could look like that.

Buuut.

Crysis and Far Cry 2 - Realistic AND good looking
Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 - So many colours, the cover for the second one is just beautiful,

and pretty much any other game that has great detail and every colour of the rainbow is an orgasm for the eyes

What I’m asking for specifically was good looking, NOT realistic.

But it does look good, so…

Yeah, Crysis and FarCry2 look good.

I also have to say another game that blew me away. Rollercoaster Tycoon 1. Back in the day it looked amazing for me.

I be stylin’ on u

I’m in no way a Call of Duty fanboy, but seeing how I’ve modded the game ever since the first modtools came out over 6 years ago I was really impressed by the level design and art involved in some of the missions in “Call of Duty - World at War” as I know how much time and effort it can take to create such maps with brushes.

GOD FUCKING DAMN IT READ THE OP.

But yes, I must admit that’s damn good mapping. But they’re professionals, they can’t afford to have blocky and bland envir… Oh, hey Valve. Didn’t see you there.

But in all seriousness. I’m seeing a lot of the same here. Are there truly THAT few game devs left that can pull us out of this graphical shitstorm?

I must say that in my gaming years i played a lot of Good games, even thou that a lot of people disliked those games. I like the cod Franchise each part is better than before, also crysis is a Great game but i must say that no game could match the Half life 2 Experince, i mean For that time Excellent Graphichs, the physics of the game , the story, the Action-Puzzle-Driving gameplay, The gravity gun, and the best thing that HL 2 offers is that put you in the game. That you could actually belive that you are Gordon , no macho bullshit no actions cutscene just constan gameplay. That way Half life 2 Was/Is/Will be the best Game for me! (Until Episode three  )

Sorry For my bad english im From Slovenia!:freeman:

I don’t care, I just read titles and post my shit. :jizz:

For stylised and beautiful graphics, I’m surprised no-one has mentioned either of these:

Machinarium:

Psychonauts:

And another one I vaguely remember playing as a kid:

I don’t really know what’s going on but it looks like windows media player, that isn’t really a beautiful looking game, it’s just flashy.

I have to agree with The Neverhood, that game is amazing to look at and it’s actually made out of clay. World Of Warcraft is also a very nice looking game, while it does look slightly dated today the world is still as great looking as ever. Also Bioshock games look sexy. As well as Final Fantasy VII-IX when the backgrounds were all drawn up and wern’t 3D, i couldn’t even imagine drawing up ONE of those backgrounds let alone a whole 60+ hour game of them.

Also OP, you asked

If the best looking game they’ve played just happened to be realistic there shouldn’t be a problem.

I’ve been going on an Icewind Dale binge lately, and I’ve noticed some parts look rather amazing in detail. I guess it helps that it’s in 2D, and pre-rendered.

I think someone might have mentioned Psychonauts a page or 2 ago. Haven’t played Machinarium but it looks very good.

Also one I myself was suprised not to see mentioned yet was Braid. I mean, the whole game looks like an impressionist painting.

Easy to see why it’s one of the games most often brought up when discussing whether video games can be art or not.

I liked how Echochrome looked. Pretty simplistic but it fits the game very well.

It seems that indie games put a lot more work into their art and design. While big companies fart out bland generic action shooter adventures. :frowning: Games such as Trine and World of Goo are made by people who care about their product, which makes it better in the long run.
