Best and worst moments in gaming history

I like COD, COD4 was great and very inovative for the time, then they remade it like 5 times, any1 remember COD1? That was amazing at the time.

this

and what EA became, there’s absolutely no Art in Electronic Arts anymore

They have gotten a bit better lately.

Yeah, Activision has taken over the powerdrunk bullshit throne. I wonder whose next.

We can finally agree on something.

And now the internet explodes.

Best: 90s generation of gaming. As someone pointed out, it really was a great time for expression of creativity in video games.

A time when tech was good, and so were the games that were powered by the tech. ID established themselves with Doom and Quake, Blizzard North became an important part of Blizzard and created hack&slash games with Diablo, The Final Fantasy series was pushing the boundaries of the PS1 and providing a fleshed out great narrative that rivals many books, Metal Gear Solid came, Half-Life was conceived, the Descent games were a new concept (and many people played them) and Modding was becoming a standard and mods were played almost as much as games themselves.

Worst: When Halo was the only thing that anybody talked about. I heard so many of my friends talking about how amazing it was, and then I played it and it was good, but it was just another game really. I didn’t understand why so many people cared at the time.

Hmmmm…I can take CoD out of that statement, put in my own words, and somehow you can still use it to describe the most popular console FPS at the time…3 guesses which one I’d put in?

The Dead Space 2 release.

Is that good or bad?

Best: Launch of Steam. The Half-Life mod scene. Baldur’s Gate singlehandedly resuscitating the RPG genre.

Worst: EA axing Westwood Studios. Troika closing. KOTOR 2 being shoved out the door literally half-finished because the suits at Lucas Arts wanted it out in time for Christmas. Deus Ex: Invisible War. Anything involving Activision.

Spiderman 2 wasn’t that bad :stuck_out_tongue:

Halo? That game seems to be a popular scapegoat although it didn’t really do anything wrong. Didn’t start any obnoxious fads that crept into other games like unlockable bullshit advantages.

The moment someone decided that they could sell THIS game:

It’s painful to watch.

wha-bam

Some would contend that it brought limited weapons and regenerating health the video games, neither of which to me is necessarily a bad thing, and neither of which I am sure it did bring. I have only heard people claim it. Also, a lot of people equate it with obnoxious 12 year olds, but present trends seem to imply they are moving towards CoD. I only really dislike it for the god-awful level design of the first one.

Off-topic: As a full on, long time Halo fan, I feel obliged to correct anyone who states that Halo brought on regenerative health. Please don’t level that accusation at it, it doesn’t deserve it. Level it instead, at its bastard sequel, Halo 2. I’m a Halo fan, and even I dislike Halo 2 for a variety of reasons that I won’t get into. Halo had a standard health system just like every other FPS around at the time, although the health kits in game are of the “derp-instahealtofullhealth-derp” kind. It admittedly has a regenerative shield (read: armour) system, but not a regen health system. That was Halo 2. The bastard sequel that should never have happened.
Also, I think the reason so many people rave/raved about the first Halo, is the same reason people rave/raved about Goldeneye: It’s an FPS on console…that works. Even running on a 360, it quite simply has control design that must come from the mind of some sort of god. Nothing in the controls of that game trips over itself or other commands. Ever.

tl;dr: Halo 2 gave regen health, not Halo. Halo likened to Goldeneye as a console FPS that works. Halo control system is awesome.

On topic, I have a few best and worst moments.

Worst: The day Oddworld Inhabitants shut down, the day Halo 2 was released, closure of Pandemic Studios (no more Mercs or Crypto!), the axing of Westwood, the day Deus Ex: IW was released (major disappointment with that game, oddly enough I like it though), the day Fake Factory decided to continue his Adriana Lima bullshit (Alyx is not supposed to be all tits and arse).

Best: The day Oddworld Inhabitants admitted they were working on new games again, Half-Life (derp), Half-Life 2 (derp derp), Portal (for bringing something different to the table), the day EA stops being a money grabbing cunt of a company, the day Microsoft wises up and improves XBL and makes it free, the day Square stop being tards and realise that a FFVII remake for the PS3 would in fact profit them greatly.

Oh, are we not allowed hopeful future moments? Tough.

EA > Activision, at least.

I came back to this topic for that?

God damn you. :frowning:

At least they had an explanation for that in the form of a magic suit that pumps you full of drugs and injects bacteria-killing-wound-gluing foam into open wounds.

It’s not like… Gears or COD or battlefield or… any modern shooter where you just seem to play as Wolverine.

Sega shutting its doors on the consol race, the recent PC software piracy spike causing a decline of awesome titles, the release of E.T. the game ( I heard that it sucked soo bad that the publisher burried the unsold copies in the New Mexico desert causing the teleportation crystals from HL to appear, thus causing an interest in teleportation tech & possible confirmation that E.T is either Xenian or part of race X :3 ) & superman 64 would be some of the worst things that happened.

Now some of the best would be Nintendo reviving gaming itself back in '83, HL reviving the shooter genre & proving that cinima quality plots can exist in games, Halo 2 getting DLC into the limelight (weren’t the first on consols by the way), motion sensing technology a la Kinect/Eye Toy or the Wii mote/PS Move, Steam, Burnout/ Gran Turismo, Super Mario 64, dual anolog sticks & rumble a la Dualshock controller would be some awesome positives across the board.

I’m sure most of you would disagree though, just my $0.02.

I’d put analog sticks up for a win actually. Way better than a Dpad.
