Best and worst moments in gaming history

Discuss what you think were the best and worst moments in gaming history.

I think one of the best moments in gaming history was the creation of the first 3D Zelda game, Ocarina of Time.

One of the worst moments (imo), was the merging of Blizzard Entertainment and Activision. I can already see Blizzard going up in smoke, starting to cater even more to casuals in WoW, they ruined it with Wotlk for me. And now I hear Diablo 3 may have a console version…thanks Activision.

Best: Being blown away by the tram ride in HL. The first time I booted the game up I knew it was going to be something very special.

Worst: Looking Glass Studios closing. All the talented people there have gone on to other projects, but with the exceptions of Warren Spector and Ken Levine, no one has lived up to the quality that studio was known for. Their games are still more advanced and deep than anything that’s come out in the few years in a lot of ways.

I dont know if it’s the worst moment in gaming history, but I’d pick the day that ensemble studios shut down.

The day World at War was released. Starting the trend of releasing a map/weapon pack every year for the same price as the pack that came out the year before, with little or no improvement.

Best: When I finally got my hands on Half-life 2. It was so new and different from the original. I was almost literally fucking glued to that computer; I played and played.
Somehow, it kept the Half-life feel almost flawlessly.
It had that science feel, just like the original. I fucking love this series.

Worst: The end of Bioshock – seriously? Rescuing little girls? After killing so many…?

Its hard to say what the best would be, but I have to say the worst (for me at least) was the dawn of the console wars with the release of the current generation of consoles. It went from gamers simply playing games and having fun to the constant “(insert console here) sucks (insert console here)'s dick!” My opinion is that the only people who have any right to call themselves gamers are the people who play all consoles, or are at least open to playing all the consoles. Quit the bitching and just play the fucking games. All the consoles have their pros and cons, but there is no such thing as the “best” console. PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii are all excellent gaming systems in their own ways. And just so the PC gamers don’t feel left out, the PC is awesome for gaming too.

No, they’re not excellent.

Everything was fine in gaming until microsoft came out with the PC, and everyone was all “Milton Bradley is for casuals” and “Wang processors are fucking gay”

Best: The video game crash of 1983 made people think that video games were unethical, violent, and just downright stupid, But one console would rise from the ashes, and change video game history forever. And that was the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES)

Worst: The day Pandemic Studios closed there doors, No more good Star Wars BattleFront Games, and no more Mercenaries games… :frowning:

I gotta disagree. PC gamers have ALWAYS ceaselessly bitched about consoles, and console fanboys have always bitched about the consoles they don’t like. This isn’t really new and doesn’t seem to have increased much as far as I can tell.

There’s always been console wars, just ask Sega. The Atari Jaguar and the 3DO based their entire advertising campaigns on how much the other consoles sucked.

worst moment was when someone decided to make console exclusive games just to promote them(or for marketing reasons)(yes i look at you halo, red dead redemption and all the others)
i can understand that some games are better played on console and more enjoyable on those and i’m not naive concerning capitalism and how it works but that doesn’t prevent me from hating that potentially pc-playable games(like every fps and almost every rpg) are kept from pcs

i would have to think about the best moment in gaming history. honestly i wouldn’t dare calling a moment i experienced the best. half life 2 was maybe better than any other game i’ve played but that doesn’t make it the best game in history.

I’ll start with my worst…

The day that IGN.com gave Halo the “Game of the Year” award. I was like Halo!? WTF? Really? In 2001 a lot of great games were released, including some mold-breaking ones…and an FPS with NO online capabilities, boring enemies, and a lame selection of guns wins GOTY?!

Hell, even Perfect Dark was a better game, and it was released a year and 1/2 earlier for a system a whole console generation older. Sure the N64 lacked the graphical power the Xbox had, but PD had gobs more features. PD had all kinds of customizable multiplayer modes, an incredible selection of guns, a ton of great maps, and up to 8 fully customizable bots.

Sure, I know I’m not talking about the 2000 GOTY awards, but shouldn’t the 2001 winner either be a great game with an incredible new play style, one that created a new genre, or one that represented a dramatic improvement for an existing genre? Halo wasn’t any of those.

Hell, here’s some games that came out in 2001:

Grand Theft Auto III
Conker’s Bad Fur Day
Black & White
Super Monkey Ball
Gran Turismo 3
Devil May Cry
Ico
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty
Civilization III

All those games, especially GTA III, and an inferior FPS wins GOTY? Bite my balls!

Worst: when this bullshit started.

I can think of lots of bad moments, but I’ll prefer to focus on the good ones.

The release of Half-Life 1. It would have to be either that or Deus Ex, and though Deus Ex certainly had more storyline to tell and far more dialog and memorable characters, it didn’t quite bring the idea of a fully-controlled player. Not having any cutscenes at all was quite a changer. It went quite a bit further with Half-Life 2, but allowing the player all range of decisions even during non-violent moments was an interesting decision for Half-Life.

In simple terms, the release of Super Mario 64. Even to this day, you’ll get a million complaints about games that have horrid camera controls, so it’s nice that one of the very early 3D games actually took a lot of thought into the process, and even gave you full control of it for when it’s necessary.

Even though I don’t play it as much, I might also say Minecraft. The game’s success is a testament to the power of indie games, and it’s a big kick in the face to the teams of enormous, widespread mobs of developers and companies working on a cinematic presentation; proof that the idea is far more powerful than the cash.

I’m sure I’d have Ico and SOTC on my list if I had ever had a chance to play them. (ARGH STUPID PS2 EMULATOR IS SO LAGGY)

Stop liking what I don’t like.

Best:the 90s nuff said
Worst (for me): when game companies and developers started catering more and more to casual/mainstream players just because theyd make more money, ie. COD,resident evil, operation flashpoint, medal of honor, and from the looks of it, the battlefield series

what

I agree so much on this. Looking at the new Battlefield 3 I thought: “Ok, is this Call of Duty rip-off really necessary?”.

So they are putting the game into Iraq in order to hope for “controversial” response aka “advertisement for $ 0.00 !” and give it a pseudo-realistic touch so all the 8-16 years old of self-confidence lacking boys are attracted by it. It will be filled with 150 achievements which and accompanied by a song with the refrain going like “Gonna Catch 'Em All!”. And your BF3 forum will be filled with 16-22 years old wanna-be conservative military experts who constantly moan about how unrealistic the weapons in BF3 are and how much better their more realistic game is they found two months after buying BF3. You will never know why they still play the game, but eventually they will still moan about every new unrealistic working realistic looking weapon added to the game.

This is man made hell.

Tthe development of casual vs. hardcore gamer elitism is probably one of the worst things to happen to gaming.

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
