Ask an Atheist!!!

I second that.

If he created the Universe, who created him?

Best goddamn argument against theists.

I did

:FFFUUU:

Off topic: You joined on my birthday :3

If the space-time continuum is round, maybe god was created by a human.
Maybe L. Ron Hubbard.:fffuuu:
Although, come to think of it, the answer is probably so fucked up you just really don’t wanna know.

You should just go ahead and make your own religion, Bmsmg. I’m sure lots of people will gladly believe that god was drunk when he made the world, your religion will probably revolve around getting drunk and doing stupid things with a perverted sense of humor.

Metaphorically drunk, for god’s sake.
"your religion will probably revolve around getting drunk and doing stupid things with a perverted sense of humor. "
It’s called a fraternity.

It’s still stupid like I’ve never seen.

I’m sure you think so, but I don’t give a flying frak.
I also don’t think I’m gonna be able to adequately describe it.

Same applies to any religious doctrine I have ever heard of, actually.

More like the shittiest, weakest most immature argument. A theist can just calim that god has always existed, as it is written in the bible.

They can claim that, but if they’re in the “always existed” mindset, then why can’t the universe “always exist” and cut out the middleman, as it were (as I asked in the Creationism/ID/Evolution thread)? Still doesn’t work.

Because it’s written in the bible. They have a flawless truth to fall back on.

Even that one’s flawed. :stuck_out_tongue:

Not according to them. Welcome to the world of delusion.

Don’t want to OT in Shadi’s thread, so I’ll just answer it here:

I have my own explanation for that. A young child know nothing about the world so it must depend on what parents say about it. If parents teach that there is God who look after people, then this God starts to be a part of the world image in the child’s head. Ideas learn in early childhood become a cornerstone of future beliefs. When you learn some information that contradicts with your world image, then your ego tries to defend itself, twists the facts or totally reject them. It requires a strong shock to redefine your own world view.

This is why for you guys who weren’t taught about God in childhood there really is no difference between Bible and some fantasy book, because you already have stable beliefs and the Bible surely must contradict with them.

There is plenty of room to change one’s beliefs, Shadi. It just takes more intellectual effort to go from god to no god, than the other way around.
I was never indoctrinated. I followed Christian classes in elementary school, by my own choice.
I had some notion of belief in god for a long time, until when I was, say, 13 years old. After that I was pretty much agnostic, but in the last two years or so I’ve become a full-blown atheist.

So it’s not always purely childhood ideas that require a “strong shock” to change.

It’s the same way the other way around, bible people are so deluded and brainwashed, they will never listen even though god has been dis-proven countless times with simple facts.

Actually many Atheists still start life growing up in households of religious belief. This is especially true in the predominantly christian North American Culture. As an example I grew up in a strong ( stereotypical ) Irish Catholic household. It was through developing critical thinking, combined with knowledge gained through years of experience that made me question Christian beliefs. Evolving from that, to Atheism is a short jump.

I take it your fingers just slipped.

Well, maybe i slightly exaggerated with this shock. I had similar - first I rejected Catholic dogmas, then i was agnostic, and finally atheist. I also agree with you that it takes some intellectual effort to become an atheist - most people just don’t care, their “faith” doesn’t even affect their life so much, so why bother?
