Seems like we’re on an “ask a ____” thread spree I’d make an ask an atheist thread.
To summarize my beliefs, I believe strictly in a scientific world. I think nothing is outside of science; if something is true then it can be explained by science. I do not believe in and feel there is no valid scientific evidence supporting things such as religion, Big Foot, alien abductions, ghosts, and just about anything “supernatural” or “paranormal”.
If you have a question for me or another atheist, post it here. Also, as my sig says, a large portion of my beliefs can be explained by a Biology textbook.
Remember, I pirate, so I can’t possibly be THAT awesome. :pirate:
Well, If you truly are serious…
I’m assuming you are referring to the fact that when you die and decompose trees absorb your nutrients.
So, to answer that, the concept of “you” ends the moment you die. “You” is simply a complex series of connections in your brain, when your brain shuts down, those connections are severed and “you” ceases to exist. So, no “I” do not photosynthesize when I die. nutrients from what used to be “my” body are absorbed by trees and used in photosynthesis.
Science is a funny thing. It’s changing every day, unlike religion which only changes when people like Martin Luther realize how terrible their church is, but can’t accept the fact that there is no God, so he makes his own church and mixes a few things up to fit his own world view.
Basically, we believe in reason. There is no reason to believe that there is a God, or big foot, or aliens, but we would be open to the idea of these things if there was actual evidence to support them. As of now, there is none.
However, there is reason to believe in gravity, because we are not floating around and shit falls to the ground when they’ve been knocked off a table or off a tree to land on someone’s head.
So if someone can show me a bearded man walking on water, I would then entertain the idea of an almighty being. Until then, stay out of my school system!
So to make sure I understand: your problem with religion is that, using the scientific methodology and theories that we have, no one can prove that God exists?
Someone always cites the youtube video about the biological basis for “religion” in religious debate threads. A biological basis for religion is an interesting hypothesis; how do you explain the human predisposition for religious faith throughout recorded history?
Because there’s a big difference between telling witch doctors that draining people with leeches is a bad idea and the crusades.
/hyperbole.
Actually, this is a proper answer:
Christian force views: YOU’RE GOING TO BURN IN HELL. YOU’RE A SINNER. YOUR ONLY SALVATION IS THROUGH JESUS. PROOF? THE ONLY PROOF YOU NEED IS THE BIBLE.
Atheist force views: You’re wrong and this is why. Also; science.
A) Before science came around people wanted to explain the world, people chose religion
B) It’s comforting to believe there’s somebody out there who’s watching you and ready to help you out, it’s also foolish and misleading, but comfortable
C) People are afraid of death, the can bare it a lot more when they think there’s 72 virgins on the other side
D) Many many people are born into religion, it’s all they’ve known since they could understand their parents, it’s engrained in their brain and they can’t understand the world any other way
E) I could probably come up with more reasons, but to sum them all up; religion is an easy way to feel good, and people like to feel good, so they believe in religion
Almost nothing can truly be “proven” or “disproven” but things like religion can be shown to be “highly unlikely” or not based on evidence.
That and the fact that using scientific method, religion has no true scientific backing and makes little sense.
Because it explains much of the world as we know it using logic reason and evidence.
This is a really good question, and I am not entirely sure how to answer it. I guess I could say that science in the future will definately be more correct than it is now, but it will still be based off the same concept current science is based off of. Right now our current scientific laws are the best possible guesses and explanations we have, so I will treat them as the absolute truth until a newer better guess or explanation comes along. When I say science, Ig uess I mostly mean the concepts behind science; logic reason evidence the scientific method.
