In relation to Garfuncle’s post, reference what Judith Mossman relates to you when you first enter Black Mesa East. She says that the Combine can tunnel through to our world but once they’re here, they have to rely on local transportation. Then, later, right before the antlion guardian fight and coming out of the underground, you watch as the Combine are traveling along a bridge heading north (“with great purpose”).
It’s possible that they’re not traveling to White Forest (though it’s a stop along the way and kill two birds with one stone) but are actually traveling to the Arctic and the Borealis.
I think that the Combine is very interested in Aperture Science’s portal technology so that they can have easy portable transportation along the surface of the Earth. Open a portal, let a bunch of bad guys through, then close it so those evil “good guys” can’t follow.
Or something. It’s all speculation at this point. But, it’s fun. 
My only prediction for the Half-Life Continuum is that Lamarr is going to pull an Earthworm-Jim Cow style return and come back to earth through a portal to save the day.

as i see it the tests in portal happens while black mesa is trying to dig crystals from xen they compete in who can make a reliable interdimensional gate (portals) and black mesa won Glados wasn’t testing Chell but the handheld portal device and she sent all her data and equipment to Borealis the ship went to the north and Chell destroyed Glados much time later Gordon got to xen and defeated Nihilanth and the combine came im not saying its right its my meaning but i when i played portal i saw some Screens and there stood something about black mesa i think it was something about beat black mesa i don’t say its right its just what i believe
