In a divided country like Belgium, where we basically have 4 different communities (Flanders (Dutch), Walloons (French), East Cantons (German) and Brussels (Dutch/French), I only get to vote for the community I live in, being Flanders.
Over here we don’t have the “easy” choice of either Republican or Democrat (and a few individuals that are never mentioned anyway). So what we have is a wider spectrum of parties to vote for. We don’t really vote for specific politicians, but for the party as a whole, individual votes for specific people merely indicates the popularity of a certain person so that he may get a bigger role in a newly formed government. I for one never voted for a specific person and just voted for a party.
The parties the Flemish people can vote for, from extreme right on top to extreme left on bottom, are:
Right:
[COLOR=‘Sienna’]Vlaams Belang (Extreme nationalistic. Anti Belgium, anti Europe)
[COLOR=‘MediumTurquoise’]LDD (Nationalistic, nobody really knows what they want, they’re just angry)
[COLOR=‘Yellow’]N-VA (Nationalistic. Anti Belgium, pro Europe)
Center:
[COLOR=‘Orange’]CD&V (Conservative, Christian, Democratic)
[COLOR=‘RoyalBlue’]VLD (Liberal, Democratic)
Left:
[COLOR=‘Red’]SP.A (Socialistic, Democratic)
[COLOR=‘YellowGreen’]Groen! (Progressive, Green)
[COLOR=‘DarkRed’]PVDA+ (Communist)
And then a whole lot of additional smaller, local parties, as well as hoax-parties.
Last elections, N-VA won with 1.1 million votes, compared to 700,00 of the second biggest party (CD&V). Do keep in mind, this is Flanders only. In the Walloons, the PS won (a socialist party). So now a right party has to sit down with a left party to figure out the best way to make a deal so everybody can be happy. Obviously this isn’t working, and as a result Belgium has been government-less for about half a year now.
Odds are we’ll have new elections soon because this is going nowhere.
Anyway, now that is over with, the party I voted for this time around was Groen! (the Progressive, green party), and will do so again if we get new elections. I’ve always been rather left in my believes (opposite of the center-right mindset of most of my family), and before last elections I always voted for the socialist party (SP.A). But this time around I felt that we needed to vote for communication between the different communities in Belgium, and I felt that the SP.A just wanted to point fingers rather than sit around and talk.
Add to that the fact that I’m pretty environment-orientated and would like the government to invest more in green energy, better public transportation and multi-cultural development, instead of worrying about which community is lazier than the other, and you get a package that aligns well with the program of Groen!.
