Xen In ep3?

Wait for Operation Black Mesa to come out; then you’ll see the BMRF ruined! :retard:

@frozen cham stop revivng unnecessary old threads

Going back to Xen in Ep3 would be the dog’s bollocks! But it’s very unlikely :frowning:

Don’t count on it!

If Xen does appear in Ep3, it’d be nice to see something like this:

(From here.)

NO MOAR XENNO MOAR XENNO MOAR XENNO MOAR XENNO MOAR XENNO MOAR XENNO MOAR XENNO MOAR XENNO MOAR XENNO MOAR XENNO MOAR XENNO MOAR XENNO MOAR XENNO MOAR XENNO MOAR XENNO MOAR XENNO MOAR XENNO MOAR XENNO MOAR XENNO MOAR XENNO MOAR XENNO MOAR XENNO MOAR XENNO MOAR XENNO MOAR XENNO MOAR XEN

No Xen in Ep3 for God’s Sake

what is XENNO?

Don’t you know : Xenu (XENNO)

I missed not seeing Xen in HL2/EP1/EP2, but so long as we still have EP3 to get to, I guess there’s a possibility that I may still have something to look forward to. I want to see at least SOME other alien world towards the end, be it Xen, or the Combine’s homeworld, or some other area. I never understood why so many people complained about Xen in the original, I thought it was the highlight of HL1, the one thing that made it really memorable. I wouldn’t regard HL1 as highly as I do if it hadn’t been for that level.

So, I don’t know about anybody else, but I’m hoping for at least some action far away from home, way outside of “Kansas,” in EP3. I mean, if the jumping is what annoyed people so much, fine, Valve doesn’t have to require the player to jump as much, but to do away with visiting an alien world, even just a short visit, just because of that, well… crap, that would just suck, IMO. :stuck_out_tongue:

Oh well, I’m sure EP3 will still be fun, regardless. But I’m still hopin’.

Hmmm… if they can think of some kind of good reason to go back, then why not?

Not from Xen. Nothing is native to Xen.

It got nuked. Laidlaw confirmed that the nuke in Opposing Force is canon.

I don’t like xen that much either, but if you want a good reason for a xen comeback… How about doing it for the sake of consistency. At the end of the HL1 arc, there was xen, now we’re at the end of the HL2 arc… get the picture? At the very least gman is gonna show up and show you uber xen visions again.

They cut Xen from HL2 because everyone hated the first-person platforming in the first one so badly. And story-wise there’s no real reason why they’d ever go back there.

What if we could see it in one of gman’s flashbacks?

Because they sucked at it back then?

When I say “they” I mean everyone.

The players sucked at fp platforming because it was a new thing. The mappers sucked at making platforming obstacles back then because it was a new thing.

It’s not new anymore. They can do it right.

I’m for it, but if I get stuck for more than an hour I’ll use noclip don’t try to stop me!

If that’s the case, then who cares?

This is not how game design works at all. You shouldn’t make a game with the expectation that players will have had practice with the mechanics already.

Ever notice how portal held your hand through everything? Not even letting you get the portal gun until the third chamber & giving you the other portal after almost another 10 levels. First-person platforming just isn’t fun or interesting (& yes I played Mirrors Edge & it sucked). Now tell me why Valve would waste so much effort into that crap in Episode 3, when they could make it more like Episode 2 & be a dozen times less likely to suck?

Why would you take the example of Portal if you think FPS platforming is boring? People love Portal.

I can’t say the same for Mirror’s Edge, but it was way too overhyped.

Not going to happen in ep3, but maybe in hl3. The direction hl2 is going wouldn’t go to xen, but it would be a great idea for hl3

@ xalener: That first sentence. You said exactly what I was thinking but was too nice to say… hi five?

@ Dias: I agree with the idea that it’s (generally) very terrible practice to throw gamers in a situation they haven’t had practice in before, and expect them to just “get it.” Unfortunately, that’s pretty much what Valve did with Xen… If they were to go back in EP3 or later, I would expect them to either introduce the player to the mechanics of it at least a little bit differently this time, or maybe just design the maps a bit differently.

However, at the same time, I strongly disagree with the statement that first-person platforming “just isn’t fun.” I think that it can be, when done right. Portal did it right. Parts of the Metroid Prime trilogy did it right, IMHO. In the end, I don’t think there’s much cause to be worried over Xen even if Valve does decide to take us back, (which, I hate to say, is probably very unlikely… oh well) because they would hopefully have smoothed over the issues of HL1’s Xen by then.

And Mirror’s Edge was awesome. :what:

If you understood my post, you’d know that’s exactly why I used it as an example. It’s good game design.

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
