Windows Media Player Crashes On Startup, No Error Message

Title.

Windows 7.

Thanks in advance.

Use something else.

Windows Media Player

There’s your problem.

Ahahahahaha, I bet you are using Firefox and never heard of the fact that Microsoft crashes your WMP on purpose to make you use ie9.

solution: https://mpc-hc.sourceforge.net/

Better solution: https://www.winamp.com/

https://www.cccp-project.net/

First of all, use the RUN prompt to start “mplayer2”. if it runs, you have an Explorer bug. if not, then it’s a DLL issue. “mplayer2” is the basic WMP without all the bells and whistles. WMP is built ontop of Explorer. What you have is likely a compatibility issue with WMP and some other Explorer app you have running either intentionally or hidden in the background. if you just want a basic media player, just use WMP Classic. You don’t have to download anything because it’s already on your system. Plus it does everything that WMP does without the headaches and extra BS that WMP does.

You can even set it to run as your default media player.

WMP is the biggest shit on planet Earth, use VLC or something…

Yeaaaah, that doesn’t happen to me.

I see they finally updated the damn thing. Last time I checked it was still linking to a 2010 build.

I’m using K-Lite, since it works as well (for me anyway) and is updated more often.

inb4 Col comes in and defends WMP

use VLC for video files and foobar2000 for music

I use VLC for .part files (a video that is still downloading)
MPC-HC with CoreAVC for every other video because VLC has horrible screen tearing on my comp.
Winamp for music because that’s what I’m used to since 2001

For a real answer (though using other players is a good idea):

Directly after WMP crashes, go into Control Panel (Start orb > Control Panel), then go into Administrative Tools (if in Category view, change “View by” to “Large icons”).

Go into Event Viewer (might take a few moments to load) and go into Windows Logs. Go through the logs listed inside that folder and find the error that WMP gives, then search the Internets for a solution.

That’s what I’d do.

Then search the Internets for a better player.

vlc + cccp
skinned and plugin’d Winamp.

coolface

except VLC doesn’t use any external codecs

Here, this conversation looked like it had some helpful answers on it:

WMP 12 Crash On Startup

Google.

I like how everyone automatically recommends something else for him. He’s a big boy, I’m sure he knows there are plenty of alternatives.

He obviously wants someone to help him fix WMP, not recommend something new…

I use VLC for video unless it plays bad in that and then I use WMPC. Foobar2000 for music.

This annoys the shit out of me. Whenever i bring up questions regarding drawing programs like MSPaint, everybody just tells me to use Photoshop instead. News Flash! : i USE PHOTOSHOP! STFU AND ANSWER MY QUESTiON!!

For the record, i actually gave good advice in this thread but it kinda got buried. WMP Classic (mplayer2) is the same program without all the extra stuff. it’s like safemode for WMP but still completely functional.
