Windows 7 VS. OSX

Sigh, just sigh.

*nix > *

but I would rather use linux and Windows than mac (and maybe Windows), by a long shot.

I like Linux more than anything OS-wise, but since I game more than anything, Windows is pretty much my only choice, because I’m not gonna use an emulator.

Pretty much. I use windows on my desktop for gaming, but Linux on my laptop, because the only games I can play on my laptop are old (deus ex, counter-strike, etc) and I can play those through wine.

WoW is not at all a resource intense game. Are you seriously comparing the situation where you were playing WoW to the situation where your brother was playing MW2?

I can convert movies while playing a game mac doesn’t even have nor is capable of playing while listening to music and I’ll be fine.

Seriously. I have played WoW with iTunes, an IM service, and Firefox with 5+ tabs open before, and the game runs at 60 fps with no slowdowns. That was a shitty comparison.

Running OSX 10.6 Snow Leopard
and running Windows 7 in it

7% performance increase
over
windows 7 by itself.

Unix is fepic.
Apple doesn’t even use BIOS anymore, they use EFI
:freeman:

speaking as a windows user though. A friend of mine has been in the biz for >30 years, he’s been hackin’ yo registries since befo we wo born… he knows what he’s talking about.

He’s got a xeon processor with 16 virtual cores
When he runs windows xp on it, it lags to high heaven, because it can’t take advantage of his computer’s hardware fully.
Guess what? OSX can :stuck_out_tongue:

I feel like a convert :o

Too bad OSX will never actually take advantage of it, because it doesn’t support any software that’d actually require that many CPUs.

Exactly.

Such high power equipment is only really useful for gaming, so why the fuck would you run high power equipment on osx?

source. That’s blatantly impossible unless you’re using two separate hardware configurations. I’m not arguing that UNIX isn’t awesome, but it’s not awesome enough to break the laws of SCIENCE.

Why are you two wanking on about WoW? I clearly states that it was running a video render, iTunes and WoW, not just WoW alone. OH WAIT, I forgot, video rendering doesn’t use any resources at all, as a matter of fact, it increases my performance!

My point of that example was to show that OSX also performs “advanced tasks”, but hardly effects anything of the rest of the system when said “advanced task” goes batshit crazy. It might not be the same “advanced task” as gaming, but it’s an “advanced task” nonetheless.

And yes, OSX can run CoD (and I realize you probably meant MW2, but seeing as you seem to read between the lines and put words in my mouth, I might as well do the same) and iTunes at the same time (and hey, this should be considered a very advanced task for OSX, since you two keep saying how OSX can’t run games and that iTunes is laggy as shit).

And seriously, gaming isn’t as advanced as you two want to believe it is. There’s fucktons of things a computer can do that’s heavier on the system than gaming. But I guess you don’t realize this, since your life revolves around gaming, and that’s why you’ll always stick to Windows.

But meh, I’m not even sure why I just posted this, because you’ll just come in again saying that everything I said is just denial rather than me debunking it, even though I pointed out more holes in your stories than you have in mine (apart from those posts where you clearly didn’t read what I said at just raged on about how shit it is).

I’m done with this, there’s no point in trying to show that both OSs are good for what they’re meant to do, no point in having a discussion with two howling monkeys that make more noise than sense. Yes, you have won with me giving up on this discussion, you’ve shown that Windows truly is the ruler and master of the universe and that OSX is a mere ant. Applaud to yourselves and feel smug about it.

Maybe your friend should use a more modern OS, one that has been coded to work with so many cores, as in Sever 08, Vista, or Win 7. And to have 16 virtual cores, he is most likely using a workstation board with two processors and XP may not have the drives/logic to use it properly.

Win 7 can do “advanced tasks” to, I am running full load 24/7 doing scientific calculations, these do not mess anything else up and if they do go crazy they can be stopped easily.

My mom has a couple years old mac laptop and they don’t even have her type of keyboard available anymore. I’ve had to put up with more shit for my mom’s laptop than I ever had for my pc.

Fuck I’ve had to drive a half hour to oakbrook mall more than a dozen times (I’m not exaggerating) just to get to an apple store so they could fix that fucking thing, because there is no way of fixing it yourself. I’ve had osx fail at forcequitting hundreds of times, other times where the computer froze so bad that the entire interface was completely gone.

That’s just running firefox, maybe itunes and a word processor, and NOTHING ELSE.

Right now however I am running fear 2, hl2dm, firefox with 12 tabs open, itunes with coverflow and 90+ gb of songs,(because I have an ipod, and if I didn’t get it for cheaper because of a promotion I would have wanted a zune or ANYTHING else) utorrent, and pidgin with 5 chat windows open on dual screens, and I do this DAILY WITHOUT COMPLICATIONS.

Specs: MAC: 2.4 ghz dual core 2 gb ram mac osx 1.5
PC: 2.4 ghz dual core 3 gb ram radeon hd 4850 windows 7

I’ve played games while rendering animations in Blender. The framerate lags a bit, but that’s just because I have a crappy machine. Nothing freezes or anything.

Whatchoo talkin’ bout. It does. He has software that monitors how much percent each core is running at. When he rips/encodes video, all of 'em are maxed out. :stuck_out_tongue:

one processor… unsure if it’s workstation. maybe.

XP doesn’t. The only reason he uses XP is to use a video ripping utility, which expires after three weeks. Every time it runs out, he reinstalls XP. It only takes 3 1/2 minutes. I’ve seen it. Hot shit :stuck_out_tongue:

He mainly runs Snow Leopard.

Sounds like pirating the gay way to me.

Might as well go all the way and get a shiny win 7 and the video ripping utility, which I have both of.

Then you won’t need osx at all! :^D

Windows 7. I hate Apple.

Just today I ran a video converting program while playing l4d2, it had low framerate but that was it.

And games are more advanced than video programs in that they use a variety of hardware at once and use more complex processes.

Bolteh you’ve been spewing biased bullshit and then had a temper tantrum when we didn’t believe you. This is why computer illiterate people use Macs; assholes like you make up stories about how windows is shit and they don’t know enough not to believe you.

In case you haven’t read any of my posts (oh yea, you never did); I never stated that Windows is shit, quite the opposite even. I’ve always stuck to my guns that both OSs have their advantages and disadvantages.

If anyone of my family or friends ask me if they should get a Mac, I always advice against it, because I know that the things they do don’t require a Mac, all they want to do is game, surf the web, check Facebook and use MSN. Yes, Windows roxorzororozorz teh boxxorozororoz for that, who am I to deny that. But ye, I’m raging here, I’m so unbelievably full of rage that a Windows fanboi tries to make me look like a Mac fanboi that has no reason nor sense in his head.

Unlike you, I have proper experience with both OS’s to realize which OS fits me best in any possible way. Over the past ± 8 years of both using Windows XP/Vista and OS9/X daily, I have a pretty clear picture of what OS offers me the right workflow, stability and performance for my job and freelance projects. That OS is OSX, with OS9 being the worst of the bunch. And as I have stated before, I haven’t had the time to check into Windows 7 enough to decide what my next computer will be, but if I see it running on my brother’s computer, it just looks and feels like a regular Windows, even if they fixed all the stability and performance issues, it’s still as elegant as a ton of bricks.

So yeah, you just stick to your Windows and game some more while calling OSX shit just because of your inability to properly use it (well, I guess it’s a long shot for me to even think that you use your computer for anything remotely useful rather than gaming and watching pirated anime). I’ll be here, still using both OSs on a daily basis and realizing that neither are better or worse. This way, we both feel satisfied and don’t have to listen to eachother’s cries.
