Windows 7 VS. OSX

Alright, this isn’t a mac vs. pc thread, but specifically windows 7 vs. OSX.

I personally think this is an absolute no-brainer.

OSX
Pros:
Don’t have to worry that much about viruses and software issues
Looks nice
Has the thing where you put the mouse in the upper right corner and it shows you all your open windows
Spotlight lets you search your HD very quickly

Cons:
Limited file compatibility and less programs to choose from
Doesn’t play very many games without programs such as crossover games, but they do not work very well (I’ve used crossover games myself)
Very few customization programs
Not a big thing, but the OSX version of google chrome sucks
Has nothing but a dock and a toolbar
iTunes is shit
Can’t use a Zune or Zune software

Windows 7
Pros:
Amazing ease of use (intuitive controls, tricks like aero shake and aero peek, a task bar, Previews of minimized windows, quickly closing windows while they’re minimized, and many more)
Part of ease of use, pinning objects is extremely useful. Pinned programs can even give options when right clicked like recently played or pinned songs/albums/playlists from media players and my games, store, and friends and pinned games for steam
Supports a massive array of old and new games many
Very very attractive
Lots of customization (go to Stardock for examples)
Very very fast
Search your HD quickly from the start menu
All your programs are very quickly accessible from the start menu
An array of programs to choose from for every task
Compatible with almost all file types
Task manager provides lots of useful tools
Compatible with more accessories
Works with Zunes
Zune software
Will be able to play blackmesa

Cons:
You have to deal with drivers
You’ll have to worry more about problems and viruses, but if you install AVG Free and don’t download something stupid you probably won’t get a virus
A little bit of a hassle to install if you currently have xp

Well. Im nowhere near as familiar with OSX.
Windows 7 has alot more features honestly, so its my vote.

Operating systems alone, I vote windows 7, but for the whole system a macbook pro has a ton of features that no other system can compare to. Apple has the whole package down, but windows 7 as an operating system has a lot of features, works well, and, well, it’s windows so it has a lot more stuff you can do with it.

I love OSX, and I love my MBP, but my home workstation that I’m purchasing in the next couple days is absolutely going to be XP or Win7.

then again, not having to deal with this is nice:

I have not used OSX, personally. But Windows 7 does everything I want it to do easily and quickly. I can’t imagine OSX being amazing enough to justify the cost.

It’s like comparing a magic unicorn to a pile of horse shit.

Who the hell cares about Zune support? Or, who the hell uses a Zune?

Me. And I love it. Much better than a Ipod.

but zune doesnt have cool ads

Zunes are discontinued anyway.
And why do you need a dedicated music player when you have smartphones? I would never buy an ipod or zune anymore.

I have a smartphone but I forgot to steal the 3.5" jack adapter that comes with it.

Funny that it’s called samsung jack and it doesn’t have a single jack on it, just a shitty proprietary connector.

Wat

I still don’t believe this, I’ll wait until they make a public announcement. And they’re still making ZuneHDs, and they are still building support for them so they’re still better than ipods even if Zune is discontinued. People were saying Zune was discontinued before the ZuneHD came out, it was a rumor then, it’s probably a rumor now.

Anyone who isn’t an ipod fanboy.
Zune software is the easiest simplest most intuitive music playing software I have found. Blows itunes out of the water.
My brother took his ZuneHD to school and showed it to a bunch of people. Almost everybody he showed it to who didn’t already have an ipod said they liked it a lot more. Everybody who already had an ipod said it was a piece of shit. The only people who don’t like Zunes are the ones stupidly loyal to ipod, which, unfortunately, is just about everybody.

@mattemuse
What do you mean not having to deal with task manager? It’s an extremely useful feature that mac doesn’t have, not some annoying program you NEED to use.
Also, don’t get xp. It’s good and better than osx, but it just can’t compare to Windows 7. And Windows 7 can run Shattered Horizons. :stuck_out_tongue:

Nobody cares about either.

Its from a thread where the OP was asking why he had 100 identical “net1.exe” tasks running in the background of his OS at all times. Thats what I like never having to deal with on MacOS.

Nope. OS X is compatible with all the files that Windows is, and has more than enough equivalent programs/ports for you to deal with. Games are an exception, but that’s not what you brought up here.

Use WINE, Crossover, Cider or Parallels. If that doesn’t work, then just go use a Windows installation for gaming.

Like what exactly? What can you not do in OS X that you can in Windows in regards to ‘customisation’?

How exactly?

As opposed to…a taskbar and a dock in Windows 7.

And? You can just use another media player if you want. iTunes has nothing to do with Mac OS X, just like Windows Media Player has nothing to do with Windows.

Mac OS X has more of those features, and they’re better implemented. Have you USED a Mac? My laptop (which I finally bought) is fantastic; the trackpad is awesome, the keyboard is brilliant and its the easiest thing I’ve ever used.

Pinned objects? You mean like, on the dock at the bottom. The dock that was stolen out of OS X. The dock that OS X does 10 times better. Ohhh, THAT dock.

Eh. If you want to play games that aren’t supported on Mac, then use Windows.

And so is your mother, but you don’t hear me going on about that all day.

On a more serious note, OS X and Windows 7 look about the same in terms of visuals, so its a moot point.

Doesn’t Stardock provide Windows with the same functionality as Mac? Like with the dock? I could be wrong, but that’s the only product I’ve ever used of theirs (and found that it destroyed my PC’s speed, so quickly removed it).

Mac OS X is faster.

Uhhh, no. Firstly, the indexing system is stupid, and doesn’t cover your whole HDD. Secondly, OS X already had this feature about a decade before Windows did, and still does it better.

And under OS X all the programs are easily accessible from the APPS FOLDER. And they’re a billion times easier to install and remove.

Give me one example of where there aren’t an array of programs for every task on OS X, then I’ll start listening to you. Until then, your fallacies will get no reaction from me (bar this one).

sigh And so is OS X.

Like…what?

Like…what?

From your tone whenever Zune is mentioned, I’d say you’re just as guilty as some of those iPod fans of fanboyism. Zune software is not more intuitive than iTunes; in fact, for the most part, it is exactly the same as iTunes. And Zunes are not infinitely better than iPods; they are, for the most part, exactly the same as iPods - a symptom of Apple doing it first. You’re muddying this thread with a) your own personal bias and b) irrelevant side discussions. You wanted us to talk about OS X, then let’s talk about it, not whether Zunes are discontinued or crap (and, just by the by, iPods rule).

And can you say definitively that OS X doesn’t work with Zunes?

And so will OS X, if you take 10 minutes to set it up.

What on EARTH do you do to your computer? Who uses the Task Manager for anything other than fixing their computer when its screws up? By definition, you’re having to fix your computer when you use that program, so it is by definition an inconvenience to use (unless you like your computer to not function, in which case be my guest to use it).

A truly unbiased and objective analysis there. /sarcasm

And apologies for the mega post; I thought each of the points deserved their own response.

woah wall

anyway lunox is better

Because plans for smartphones here are total crap.

FUNFACT! The Windows Blue Screen of Death isn’t evil! It’s just like any other crash (Windows or Mac), but BETTER! In fact, it’s a kindness Apple doesn’t give its users. First of all, if you hotkey it, it’s an instant SAFE (except unsaved documents and such, but most programs auto-save things nowadays. If your Office programs don’t already, I highly recommend you set the auto-save feature up) reboot for when anything goes wrong, windows related (usually not the case) or hard/software. The reason macs don’t crash as much is that A: Less people, B: Less soft/hardware to fuck them up. (Less hardware = less variety = less money =(generally, not always) less quality) Macs DO crash. They can find themselves in an exact situation that would cause a BSOD, and all it would do is freeze or shut down. Apple never set up a way to handle those situations. Windows did the second next best thing you can do in programming. Let the user know there was an error, and restart the program. The program being the OS. (I’m taking programming courses, and that is programming etiquette 101. If you can’t let the user change something after an error to prevent it, then you have defaults for it to go to. If defaults don’t make sense or would cause trouble to the user, then simply let the user know there has been an error, and restart the application)

Oh, and I choose Windows 7 because it’s awesome. At first I was like, yay mac with a window vista’s problems and a windows crest. That was the day I got it. The fourth day I was like, Yay, no problems, now its just a mac with a windows crest on it. Two weeks in, I loved it more than any operating system. And I dislike macs even more now. Personally, the Finder bar or whatever its called is annoying to me. I don’t like only being able to see one menu at the top of my screen at a time. And I like it better at the bottom, and I like things being the way I like them before customization (which is, by the way, better on 7).

To be fair though, OSX is compatible with most file formats except the big one. NTFS (Windows). Then again, so is Windows, minus ITUNG* or whatever their proprietary crud is.

*I know that’s not what it is…

I’ve had macs crash on me a lot. And the motherfucking beach ball of death ARGH.
