Will the Black Mesa be a competitor to EP3?

Hi there!

I am new to this community, but I was following the mod updated and media since its first announce. It was so hard to understand that 2009 release is delayed for indefinite time.

I just wanted to ask developers about the possibility of competitiveness of BM and EP3. I think, if you release the BM right in an EP3 release day, everyone will start playing the BM first to re-visit the first HL world. Then everyone will replay HL2 with episodes 1-2, and only after that they will take Episode 3.

Valve didn’t support you guys with your great remake, as they supported other projects like Portal 2 and Left4Dead. The method, described by me will really stack the Valve Corp.

Why do you think it’s about competing? We just want a refreshed Half-Life, that’s all. Who cares about which game will have more players during the release day?

Portal didn’t compete with Portal 2. L4D2 didn’t compete with Left 4 Dead. And of course Valve “supports” their own products. They’re the ones who makes them. They don’t support mods in development, because they aren’t their mods.

If BM and Episode 3 were released on the same day you can bet everyone would play Ep3 first. Why? Because everyone knows what happens in Half-life. People would play Ep3 first because it’s a truly new experience.

Releasing them on the very same day would be an incredibly dumb move for both parties though.

competing in not releasing category

But anyway, it would be very interesting to see the Valve reaction. Why didn’t they support that mod? They can give the developers a commercial contract to make a business with Steam. Hell, they are remaking the WHOLE game for free!

Simple. When they realized they couldn’t make the 2009 release, they went back and found that they could improve upon the assets they had and now have a much stronger mod than would’ve been released in 2009.

Um, those are their products. They make money with Portal 2 and L4D. They don’t make money with Black Mesa. Portal 2 and L4D aren’t mods.

Also, most people that would play Ep3 have already played through HL1 and HL2 and the Episodes. I don’t know which I’d play first but it’s kind of a hypothetical because the chances of BM and Ep3 being released on the same day is remote.

I remember about a year and a half ago (or longer), when people were starting to get anxious about the Half Life2 Ep. 3 being release, some of our Community members speculating about BM actually being released with HL3. In other words, Valve kind of making another “Orange Box” type of release. But I have to agree with AirRaid, if that happened, playing HL3 would be my first choice.

I’d probably play BM first, but only because I only played through Half-Life all the way through once a long while ago. I’ve played through HL2 and it’s episode several thousand. Plus, chronological playthroughs ftw.

First off, Black Mesa will most likely be done before Episode 3, so waiting the extra time in the name of Ep3 would be fucking stupid.

Secondly: Episode 3 > Black Mesa
Any day of the week, sorry.

I’ll probably won’t be buying Half Life 3 on the day it is released.

So in the hypothetical scenario of the OP, I’d choose Black Mesa. I’m fairly sure, however, that this would only increase the hype and make me want more Half life, and lead me to purchase Half Life 3 sooner than I would have…

Not really competitive in the marketing sesne, if it acts as a promotional playable content for the commercial game(s) of the series.

people would rather pay money for something new than get a rehash for free.

Valve didnt support Portal 2´s developing, THEY WERE DEVELOPING it.

If they were to hypothetically release on the same day, you can be sure I would play the fuck out of Episode 3 first, maybe even twice in a row before I would even laid eyes on the Black Mesa download link.

Personally, I would prefer re-complete all the story before Ep3: BM.HL2, EP1, EP2, and then EP3.

Seriously?! You’ve been waiting seven years for this mod, screw EP3!

I gots my priorities man. Besides, I’m not as desperate for this mod as some people in this forum seem to be.

I’ve been tracking this mod since late 2007/early 2008. You could say that I’ve been “waiting” since then, but I’ve been living my life during that time, so…

L4D2 didn’t compete with Left 4 Dead.

Well…

Bm is a hoax. Havent you figured it out yet? The best Hoax in the world doesnt compete with anything.

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
