hmm “stop existing” i would rather say divide into very small pieces, and decay in physics is when the atoms loose some of their mass due to radiation which is sending out particles like “helium atoms”, electrons, positrons (except for gamma-rays they send out high energetic electro-magnetic waves)

It’s called Half-Life because that sounds cool, is related to the setting of the game and represents the life expectancy of all of your enemies.

Unlike in Half-Life 2; Half Life 1 had at least several references to radiation, isotopes or nuclear energy

  • The game took place in Black Mesa, a missile testing facility during the Cold War Era. No doubt the testing range also conducted nuclear weapons test
  • Radiation Hazards was always present in at least a part of each chapter
  • Radioactive Isotopes were used as ammo for two of the experimental weapons you could pick up
  • Nuclear Reactors were present in 2-3 levels

Plus you could also say that the term was also applied to the character Gordon Freeman. Afterall Valve played around with using the term Half-Dead, but they figured Half-Life would have add some form of Science aspect to the game

They probably wanted to find a way to plug in the character Lambda to the halflife title to not only signify the decay constant but also wavelength and frequency, further expanding upon their science-fiction themed shooter
