Why?

someone explain to me why the named it “Half-Life”

half-life [haf-lahyf, hahf-] Show IPA
–noun, plural -lives [-lahyvz] Show IPA.
1.
Physics . the time required for one half the atoms of a given amount of a radioactive substance to disintegrate.
2.
Pharmacology . the time required for the activity of a substance taken into the body to lose one half its initial effectiveness.
3.
Informal . a brief period during which something flourishes before dying out.

Because it sounded cool obviously.

you might of noticed a slight science fiction theme in the game.

bscly

.

Fuck.

Kairouseki and [Gotta] are both right in their own ways.

yeah, but going by that logic. it could have been called;

“Super Science Fun Time”

I suppose so.

If you’re retarded.

That would’ve been awesome :’(

Except it isn’t aimed at 6 year olds.

It’s called Half Life because that’s a science term, and science terms sound cool in science related games. HL1 uses a lot of science, and having a name that is a science term works. You wouldn’t call it Super Science Fun Time at all, seriously.

A comical mod called Super Science Fun Time might work though. :3

It’s sort of a tattoo to the game now, Half Life 2 might not make sense to its name, but people who play it know exactly what it is.

I sense a TeamFortress 2 styled remake of Half Life.

There are fun screenshots of BM with TF2 comic style somewhere.

The Freeman is credit to Black Mesa.

Notice how Half-Life and its expansions have something to do with science. 2 of the expansions also have double meanings.

Half-Life - The Lambda logo is in the Greek alphabet and represents the decay constant in the half-life equation, in other words it means mathematical and scientific description of exponential or gradual decay.

Opposing Force - Refers to Isaac Newton’s Third Law of Motion, which means that every action has an opposite reaction. The double meaning is obviously you are now one of the original game’s enemies.

Blue Shift - Refers to the blue shift light phenomenon, meaning the shortening of a signal’s wavelength and/or increase in frequency, meaning the object is moving towards the observer. The double meaning refers to the shift you are assigned to.

Decay - Refers to exponential decay, or the decay constant.

I found most of this on wikipedia and the Half-Life wiki, and cross checked it with actual scientific sources.

Why are you called snakedoctor? You are not a doctor for snakes.

Half-Life is generally the time it takes for half of the atoms in question to decay, when you’re considering radio active atoms such as C14 and Uranium, etc…

Then you have decay, which simply means “to disintegrate” or “to stop existing”, which is referenced the HL co-op game (is it that one?) of the same title.

Lambda, the symbol, generally refers to the wavelength of a wave.

Then you have Blue Shift which refers to the the doppler effect that shifts the apparent frequency of a radiation when the source is moving towards you. This makes white light appear blue. Red Shift is the opposite, when the source is moving away, the waves get stretched out, lowering their frequency, thus making white light appear red.

Entanglement is a Quantum Physics phenomena when two particles’ states can be “entangled”, thus giving birth to phenomena such as Tunnelling (Mossman mentions that in the beginning of HL2).

Dark Energy is a hypothetic energy that has not been proven to exist, but it would explain many things in physics.

Zero-point energy is the lowest level of energy a system can exist at. The Gravity Gun is an obvious reference to that.

These are all the references I can think of, I may be wrong with some, but basically as others have said, HL is a science-fiction themed franchise, and it is often mysterious in nature, which is why it often references subjects that today’s scientific theories cannot explain yet, such as quantum mechanics.

“when choosing a name for the game, we tried to establish criteria: it needed to be evocative of theme, avoid clichés in the genre and have a corresponding visual mark. We wanted to communicate the science fiction feel, the more mature sense that we were going after a game that was not just a shooting gallery. There was going to be and a more thought provoking one… and so Half-Life. We thought about that, and that seemed cool, and we tried to look at Half-Dead. We went through hundreds of different names, Half-Life was one that stuck out fairly quickly.” Gabe

I always thought “Half-Life” was somekind of a symbol for the game, because it was the first one to provide a continous game experiece without any “Mission objectives”, funky loading screens or briefings before starting a level. Nothing but walking through a game, almost like the “Real-Life” or “Full-Life”. Anyways, it’s just a game so calling it “Full-Life” would be way to badass. So they called it “Half-Life”.

That was before I discovered that this is an actual English vocable. But I still believe in it…

damn my brain hurts from reading all these scientific equations… i need some apirin.

Yeah you should probably stop that.

A possibility of why it’s called HALF-life I had put in other thread (all this is just a theory of the forums of hl2 spain. But it’s very thinked and seems the truth, of course that’s just a theory)

Also for knowing what catatonia and galvanic activation is, search it in wikipedia, it’s very interesting.

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
