Take the time to read the comments posted below the article. Some are hilarious.

Enjoy.

Sounds like a load of bullshit to me.

Valve has always made the best they can within the limits of the technology available.

Sigh, I will have to haunt my grandchildren in death to find out about the game.

Sounds like a crappy excuse to me. How much better can mo-cap get? Do they want to mo-cap every vein and artery for really gorey deaths or something? Or mo-cap convulsions for every muscle for advanced flinch animations?
…That’d be nice, actually.

That sounds stupid. It’s like refusing to drive a car because you’d rather wait until teleportation is fully developed, which would allow to pass the distance in a better way.

Their complaint about mocapping seems to be that it doesn’t allow for dynamic interaction (ie a mocapped character won’t turn to look at you as it’s speaking, it’ll only face one preset direction). As I understand it, that isn’t exactly a flaw with modern mocap hardware, that’s an inherent flaw with the concept of mocapping. If they wan’t to fix the flaw it won’t be done by waiting for better hardware, it’ll be done by workarounds on the software end.

bscly

Sounds like the voice actor might’ve misunderstood something they’ve said to him or he’s just pulling this out of his ass.

Besides, Source already has all kinds of animation features that do the thing about following the player character with their eyes and head. Hell, NPC’s in HL2 even readjust their position to follow your movement. Although, the way HL2 does animation is more dynamic than straight motion capture sequences, although it makes the characters look more robotic.

HL3 will be made on IdTech6.
You heard it here first folks.

Last week, John Carmack joined Oculus VR as their new CTO. He’ll continue working at Id Software on a reduced basis, so we could be in for a bit of a wait.

Source 2 vs Id6 will be interesting.

they are waiting until polygons get replaced by voxels and bitmaps are replaced with vectors

I hope that this is misinformation, because it’s quite shocking to think that Half-Life 3, after all the gentle hinting from Valve, and the obvious public interest surrounding it, would not even be in production.

Then again, they are working on Source 2 now… can’t Source 2 progress be viewed as Half-Life 3 progress? During the 6 year span during which Half-Life 2 was being developed, Valve was not only creating a ground-breaking FPS game, but also a ground-breaking FPS engine! So, once development of Source 2 is “complete”, and Left 4 Dead 3 (Which, due to recent leaks, seems like it’ll be their next game), has shipped, Half-Life 3 should be their next project, logically. Seeing as their spiffy new engine should be mostly ready, and since they most likely have some solid Half-Life 3 consepts on the table, the wait shouldn’t be too much longer… (A few more years at most… right? :frowning: )

Also of note, Laidlaw is “no comment”-ing this on his Twitter, and given his record of dis-swaying rumors, this seems to be an actual leak. Stuff we’re not supposed to know about… Just something to chew on.

Well, let’s say the engine will take 2-3 more years and HL3 itself 3-4 years, so see you in 5-7 years guys.

You’re assuming they just started work today.

According to the leaks, yes.

They’ve been working on it but are stuck on a unknown error issue.

Hilarious !

valve is waiting till all traditional computing is replaced by quantum computing, you heard it here first, folks!

Valve is waiting because it’s by far the best thing that they do. They’ve got years and years of experience at it.

They are presently number two, after 3DRealms, but at this rate, Valve will soon be number ONE!

To think that Gordon will be replacing Duke… what an utter and total embarrassment.

Don’t tell me Dota 2 takes all the resources since 2010… they must be working on something else as well besides Dota 2 and Left 4 Dead 3.

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
