I was wondering, why? Why if we’re playing in Eastern Europe,? Being the AK-47 the most produced weapon in the world, and even more in Eastern Europe, it should be used in Half Life 2. Then I realised, maybe it’s a sucessor of the MP5 from Half Life 1… I don’t know, I think Valve may have had a reason to choose it. But anyways I really don’t like the MP7, it’s a micro-SMG, but in the game it’s used as if it was an assault rifle. What do you think?
I really just can’t see the ultra-modern CPs using AK-47s.
Edit: There actually was an AK-47 in the beta, but they cut it because it was redundant, IIRC.
I’m going out on a limb here, but I do believe the MP7 is a staple sub machine gun in many law enforcement agencies world wide, and was engineered by a European country (Germany?) and is wildly popular in Europe for their law enforcement.
Also, it looks a lot more modern than an AK does, giving a more advanced feel to the game. Considering the enemy, that makes more sense than the generic AK that everyone associates with countries in Europe. Though, I generally associate that with countries like Iran, Iraq, and places in Africa. And Russia, because they designed it.
Oh, and the MP5 was designed to be a close range automatic weapon with an assault rifle feel to it. The MP7 just improved upon that model. So the idea of it being used as an ‘assault weapon’ isn’t all that far fetched.
Edit: And just like Comrade Tiki said, there IS the AR2. I had forgotten 'bout that one haha
The AR2 fulfills the assault rifle role, don’tcha know.
The MP7 fulfills a PDW role. I have a feeling Valve would have gone with the PP-2000 if it was exhibited longer before HL2’s release.
But seriously now, the MP7 was chosen because it looks clean and futuristic (…folding front-grip), and it was relatively new with the release of Half-Life 2 (thus likely to survive into the Combine-era).
Personally I’m not a fan of many of the weapons in HL2; they just don’t handle realistically. The MP7 isn’t too bad I guess, but the pistol’s the thing which really annoys me. I always replace the model and sound when I play the game.
The traditional AK-47 is completely redundant nowadays in any modern army. If we were to see one in Europe during HL-2 it’d be a modern variant as original AK47s are extremely rare.
I replaced the MP7 with an MP5 mod…
I also replaced the Combine Assault Rifle with an M4 Carbine with M203 Grenade Launcher attached…
I replaced the Pistol with a Glock 17.
technically the mp7 in hl2 was the prototype version
so logically the combine took the design and recycled it and added 5+ ammo capcity (normally a mp7 would have either 20 or 40 rounds) and further added a nade launcher
the AK was in the leak/beta universe but was cut (it was considered the AR1)
I personally loved the pistol, it felt like it was stronger than most of the other guns. :retard:
Now that’s just retarded.
I disliked the pistol in HL2 because of the kickback of the firing animation, it made me feel like I was shooting a rubber gun.
Also it took me several years to realize it was supposed to be a USP.
I don’t see why you’d replace the AR2 with a real gun though.
One thing I was always confused about was why they used the MP7 and gave it a grenade launcher?
I mean, look at the grenades that you use for the MP7 in game. They are way bigger then anything that could possibly fit in that MP7’s underbarrel.
All world models are larger than v_models, not sure if you’ve cared to notice that before.
yes, but the grenade v_model that comes out of the MP7 is too large to fit in the underbarrel
I was always annoyed by the pistol not using casings when fired.
As for the actual scenario’s use of weapons, the MP7 does make some sense, but personally I would have swapped it for the AKM, or maybe an AK 102, at least by Episode Two.
Once you transfer to the woods, the Resistance would probably want something easier to maintain with few tools available. An AK with a GP-25 would have filled the MP7’s role nicely (and been more appropriate to the Eastern European locale). Change the caliber and ammo pickups to reflect the change in gun, extend the range a bit, and bump the damage. The AR2’s power should have been increased as well to balance the change.
Well, about the Pistol, it’s possible that they used caseless ammunition, since the USP can use different types of munition (or has different models). Regarding the “too big grenades”, they are obviously bigger for gameplay reasons, because the player could miss them easily if they are too small (I had that problem in BM with the Mp5 Grenades in some places).
I quite like the Idea with replacing it with the AK 47, it makes really sense but it would’ve been just a too abrupt change.
Only Thing I had Issues with was that I found the penetration power of the MP7 a bit too weak, I used it later in the game only for the grenade launcher to clean places where combine were barricaded. For close quarter combat my choice was the shotgun or the AR2, for long range combat the crossbow or the Magnum. But that’s another story.
As for ANY Nitpicks regarding the weapons: Remember that Half Life was never about being a realistic shooter. If you want that, play COD or Battlefield or Arma or IDK what else there is. If you want another weapons, mod them in, there should be more than enough for your needs.
Just my 2 Cents…
Once you fire, it’s in the world and no longer a v_model, so that should help explain it–
I’ve played games with more realistically scaled launched grenades, and it’s nearly impossible to see the projectile at all. For instance, in Battlefield 2, I had no idea the grenades had geometry until I tweaked them to stick to a surface before detonating.
The launched grenades in HL1 and HL2 are oversized. Just use your imagination to make the nades fit under the MP7.
Is your imagination really so poor to neglect the possibility of caseless ammunition?
That is because of a last minute change in HL2 development IIRC. They were going with the OICW, a craptastic concept weapon (it was a assault rifle with a massive-fuck-off ultra advanced grenade launcher on top). It got cancelled, probably beacause mass-producing it would bankrupt the USA in no time.
The w_model for the SMG grenade is suppoused to fit the OICW. It even fires slightly higher than the underbarrel if you look close enough.
Also, I don’t really think an AKM would fit the ultra advanced combine too well. I think a AK-12 would fit the game better, if it only got developed 8 years early. Or an AEK-971 for you rare gun enthusiasts.
You mean the AKM. Nobody really uses the AK-47 anymore. That myth is popularized by CoD and misinformed movies, all of which use the AKM model but for some reason (erroneously) call it the AK-47.
As for the MP7, I think it was to get the non-traditional look. Technically the MP7 is not quite an SMG by definition; it’s a PDW. It, like most other PDWs, fires specialized ammunition that only a specific company makes (in this case, the proprietary 4.6x30mm armor-piercing round made only by H&K). Because of that, it’s not as widely used as more traditional SMGs like the MP5, which uses a popular pistol round (the 9x19mm Parabellum). I think Valve chose the MP7 because not many people are familiar with it due to its less-widely-used nature, which makes it seem exotic.
I’m talking about the W_model for the grenade is larger then the barrel on the smg w_model that it supposedly fits into.
just pretend it’s using those cute little grenades from Aliens
