Really grasping at straws here, because I wasn’t terrifically impressed with anything 2013 had to offer;
Contagion.
It’s still in beta, so it’s not really even a 2013 game, but it’s honestly the only new thing all year that I’ve really liked. It’s an extremely tense and dynamic experience. Which, imo, is the secret to horror’s future in video games. Even just a taste of the dynamic makes something twice as scary (AKA; what Amnesia needs). In Contagion, there’s a really good FFA mode where the start off the round is a scavenge for the good weapons where you desperately hope you don’t run into anyone, and the rest is hunting eachother while the horde encircles you. The zombies swarm gunshots in a way that’ feels really organic. And you can hunt fellow survivors by watching where the zombies are walking. Good stuff.
Infinite was cool, but the gameplay was sorely lacking.
Kinda a bad year in gaming imo. Deadspace series finally gave up on being fun, BF4 released unfinished and not justifiably changed from its predecessor (how the hell did they not finish it? It’s not even that different), steam living room experience was announced, but hasn’t dropped yet and there’s, as expected, no news on the HL3 front, and all the other AAA’s failed to impress. Assassins Creed got beaten like the dead horse it is one more time alongside the other dead horse CoD, GTAV hasn’t come to PC, Tomb Raider sold out to the ADD action advetnure crowd (better than Underworld at least, which was on the opposite side of boring beyond believe, get your damn pacing right Square Enix), not sure what else to bitch about. Guess I haven’t seen any really good 15-30 dollar MP titles drop recently except GOTY Contagion. (the best games IMO are always in this category).
