I saw that Freeman’s Mind episode, and I have finished the game.
He thinks “that’s either a really exotic bird, or the souls of the damned begging to be released from the neverending agony” or some shit like that.
Im kyuriouse

Well, there are space aliens running around eating people in the dick, I would assume it’s some scientists/grunts/guards
The souls of the people who’s limbs those are flying across the conveyor belts and into the vats of acid later in the game.
It’s a game where aliens invade a spooky science facility and turn people into zombies. Only to have the military come in and ignore and try to kill you. There’s gonna be some screams.
Those are sounds from Left 4 Dead, I believe. Ross Scott just added them for the creepy aspect; they weren’t in the original game.
Actually, no. Those sounds actually were in Half-life, but they were remixed into one in L4D.

It’s also played when you enter this dark room in Xen. Felt really nervous after that…
EDIT: just listen to this freaky shit

at Nihilanths portal you hear scientists and guards saying something like “big day today” something like that you should think Nihilanth can steal souls
It is odd, I never knew what they were. Didn’t sound like people screaming, I think it’s just a sound effect. It did its job, I found it unnerving
Those are the sounds of the Tentacle dyeing. They probably thought it was cool so they put them in On A Rail and maybe in other parts of the game as well.
Same for me.
Isn’t that a miss match of tons of different sound effects you’ve heard muddled over each other? It love it. It really does give a feeling of “This is it”.
Isn’t it like, the eye of Xen or something?
wat
i love the tiny bits of hp lovecraft influence you find through HL1. i definitely consider the game to be in the realm of cosmic horror.
Yeah me too. Thus my name, haha.
In on a rail, near the bottom of the rocket there is a loud scream. First time i played HL it scared the shit out of me and after looking in the room with tons of gibs, i ran back to the tram and drove as fast as possible away from this place.
I never went to this place again.
First i thought it’s just the scream of the soldiers who died there. But after thinking about that this sounds are also on XEN i don’t know anymore. In my opinion, they are the remaining sounds of an cut Story. Maybe they wanted to add an beta monster in this chapter, but they cut it out. So they left the sounds there because of the atmosphere.
