All Jews were also suspected terrorists in the Nazi doctrine. They believed in the conspiracy theory that the Jews were going to take over all the wealth and power in the world, gradually, until every other people would be slave to the Jewish race.
Every human in the workcamps was a suspected terrorist, collaborator, sympathizer of the enemy, member of the political opposition, or in any other way declared “enemy of the state”. Homosexuals were also interned because they were viewed as “defective humans” in the Nazi ideology.
So, it is wrong to torture people based on suspicion? Does Guantanamo ring a bell, then? And what if Christian hate-mongering fundamentalists would provide a president in America? I could totally imagine Muslims and homosexuals going into concentration camps, then. Many Americans still see homosexuals as “defective humans”. And people from another religion and culture (this time it’s the Islam) as “potentially dangerous”.
A good basis for the same thing happening again. It just takes a few more steps to get there.
You talked about “killing millions of their own people”. But people who were sent to concentration camps weren’t “their (the Germans’) own people” anymore by definition. They were enemies, because otherwise they wouldn’t have been sent into camp.
I suspect that in America, you can pretty much send anybody into prison by now, if you just publicly announce that he has been a terrorist himself, sympathizing with terrorists, collaborating with Al Quaeda or running an Islamic fundamentalist group bent on destroying the Western culture from the inside.
Proof can be engineered (if needed at all), that should be no problem for a resourceful government such as this.

It really depends on where your heart is. If you can dehumanize someone it’s easier to kill them, which Hitler was really good at getting people to do. But if you have a strong connection with your brother, than you might be more apt to sacrificing yourself, which people have done throughout history.
