Wasted GPU (kind of)

Newegg had this ATI 5570 at like… less than 50% of the regular price (40$ CAN. shipping and taxes included), so I ordered one to replace the old 7300GT in my media center/living room PC cause it kind of struggled at 1920x1080.

My main PC has a 4670, so I searched around to know which was best, and apparently the 4670 still is faster for gaming than the 5570, so I’ll put the 5570 directly in the living room PC instead of upgrading/swapping.

I receive the card yesterday, install it, start the machine:

<BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP; BEEP BEEP; BEEP BEEP BEEP; BEEP BEEP BEEP>
My first encounter with a POST beep code thing… With some googling, it turned out the error is: “Extended Block Move”, and is caused by some conflict between integrated graphics memory and the pci-e card memory.

Long story short, it turns out all Lenovo PC’s of that family do not support any of the ATI 5XXX series, and the only explanation Lenovo cares to give is : We don’t support 3rd party parts.

Fuck you Lenovo.

Should I still try the 5570 in my main PC? What will DX11 give me, and how much of a performance drop will I get (if any?)

Did you try disabling the onboard video in BIOS?

Did you try updating the BIOS on the motherboard?

try to push the RAM in, they may have gotten loose when you were insterting the GPU

jerry… get out

NEVER BUY COMPLETE SYSTEMS!!!

this.

insert your cock in the usb drive.

usb drive?

the lenovo PC not supporting 5xxx cards sounds wrong. the 4670 really is considerably faster, keep it in your gaming pc (although its still a VERY weak card, an upgrade to a 5770 would serve you well).

do what was suggested: bios update, disable onboard video, and also test the new card in your current main PC (but dont replace the 4670 with it). If all of those yield no results… well, don’t buy a prebuilt PC next time haha. sell the card I guess and upgrade your 4670 to a 5770 or better, and pop that in your htpc.

Try purchasing a new motherboard, it also adds the ability to overclock.

ok this may sound stupid but have you plugged the power plug into your graphics card?

o btw, is your computer still in warranty? if so, computers can suddenly die. ya know? it happens all the time. (hint hint)

Yes I tried all of that

Lenovo won’t release any BIOS update because they don’t give a shit, as long a
I stopped trying when I read about these couple of guys with the same computer, same video card, and they all tried what you suggested as well.

Also, reverting to the 7300GT worked fine, so it’s a problem with the card itself, or a compatibility issue… haven’t tried the 5570 in my other PC, but I’m sure it works fine.

Edit: Since I posted this over like 2 hours, I missed a bunch of replies…
That computer is about 5 years old, and I had a great deal for it since my dad works for IBM… it was my first computer, and it’s the last pre-built I’ll ever get.

I know some of you freaks consider the 4670 weak, but I don’t need 100 fps when I play Crysis (and I don’t play it anyway :stuck_out_tongue: ). It still plays well any game I throw at it… My monitor is only 1440x900 though, so I might get something better when I get another monitor.

46xx>55xx

I just bought a new ASUS, it has a ATI Radeon 5730 and it is AWESOME!! I can play every single game that i have on either High or Ultra, and the games im playing are StarCraft II, Crysis, Half-Life 2, DiRT 2, Modern Warfare 2.

Compared to my old laptop (which was an HP) and it only had a 4650 which i could barely run StarCraft II on medium, so yes i would upgrade

I guess your best bet would be to sell the card and buy one that you KNOW is compatible with your current machine, like another 4670 (should cost about the same, maybe a little more than a 5570)

Well, I doubt I can find another good card for 40$ :stuck_out_tongue:

I’ll probably just give it to my dad though, he was thinking of buying a new PC, and I think I convinced him to build one

But really, if the Lenovo’s BIOS doesn’t support the new cards and they refuse to roll out any updates, you’re not left with much choice.

Yes. You have to bomb the Lenovo headquarter.

I’ll buy it from you for 40$ if you want, I’m buying a dual PCI-e x16 slot motherboard to have at least 3 monitors on one PC.
