Video game banning and censorship

the thing is that movies don’t have the feel of being the person performing the action, unlike a video game which has that feel, at least, that’s how the parents see it. the truth is that when playing a shooting game with a controller, say Modern Warfare for example, it does not simulate the recoil of a weapon like a desert eagle, or the feel of the trigger guard around a finger, this is all visual stimulus, not physical stimulus, thus not applicable as a form of weapons training. The other big issue is, like everyone has been saying, if a parent doesn’t want the kid to be subjected to this stimulus, don’t buy the fucking game. It’s like what JeffMOD said, it’s not that shootings happen because of video games, they happen because the people are mentally unstable.

Damn I was hoping no one would catch that flaw in my analogy, you got me.

So how would one prove that games do not cause people to become violent?

So out of complete coincidence I am going to have to do a debate on this topic. How lucky, this thread can help me perfect it.

I say that people with violent tendancies play violent games. If you are opposed to such things then you won’t play games that have them. The games don’t create the problem, they’re just associated with it.

You don’t have to prove that games do not cause violence. The people who say they do have to prove they do.

Oh snap that’d a good response if I get asked that question.

And what about all the video-game addicts, aren’t games “ruining lives”? (they don’t but…)

Isn’t television ruining lives? Isn’t fapping ruining lives? Isn’t running marathons ruining lives?
Anything can “ruin” a life if someone gets obsessed.

someone once said, if violent video games make you violent, shouldn’t dido be blamed for rising unemployment?
And my personal input shouldn’t Mario be blamed if anyone ever was to smack their head of a wall, or jump on someone heads?

So Dido did die from the music business then? Thats a shame, she had quite good music. :frowning:

Although there’s still rumours going around that she’s gonna release a mystical new album. O_o

What? :S lol Dido’s music reminds me of a certain head master who’d force us to listen to it as we were marched into assembly, still have nightmares to this day, and so is torteous to my ears. But listening to Dido encourages people to be lazy and thus my proud nation, england, has gone to the dogs, can the goverment please ban her music for this reason

Because violence existed before video games. Ergo, video games does not cause violence. Its not a simple causal link, since kids were bashing each other up long before MW2.

Here’s a post I made on another forum outlining the two cases and which one wins:

If they censor and ban video games due to profanity and violence, they might as well ban sex and guns (you know, those things we have to protect ourselves with?) while they’re at it.

I don’t know about you, but I’ve never had to protect myself with sex. Or guns for that matter.

Yes, I know that my previous statement had horrible wording, but my point is that kids are exposed to alot worse stuff than video games.

Kinda funny how so many people in 'Merica freak out when kids play stupid shooter games with animated violence, but are all for shipping them overseas to shoot everything that fucking moves.

Loony, I do believe you’re the first new person (I say ‘new’ because you joined this year and only have 36 posts) I’ve seen to post so coherently and concisely. Most of the time the eloquent people on these boards just spout of massive streams of wordy garbage, but you haven’t!

Top hole, my good man, top hole.

Oh, yeah, topic… Er… Them vidya games. Ban 'em all, I say.

I felt like posting it here since it would be on-topic.

Thanks for posting that, I was wondering why none of our Australian members had made a topic about that, but now we don’t need to. I sure hope this is a step in the right direction for finally getting out of the dark ages and catching up with the rest of the developed world’s rating systems.

I actually thought we were going to keep taking steps back, but this is a step forward.

Now to see if we can educate people on how games are like any other hobby.

Great to see they’ve released the discussion paper and are encouraging people to voice their opinions!

If you are an Aussie, fill in the PDF/Doc they have linked and send it off (email/postal address is on the first page of the doc). If they get lots of responses in a mature and positive manner the more likely something will come of it.

Fill out your details and Fax/Post/Email it in.

Here is the Discussion Paper that some people seem to miss

Well, look at it this way. If some day we live to see some censorship apocalypse, we still have the good ol’ Super Nintendo Emulator…<3sigh<3
